I happened upon a Sea Smoke botella 2005. Bought it! Wow!
No band-aid though. Lovely, lovely. Thanks. I like your enthusiasm.

I need to find me some sea smoke. QOTD: I don’t know what I’m drinking this weekend. Maybe I’ll crack open a bottle of Cote Du Rhone. Nice rant at the end. One of the best pieces of advice anyone ever gave me about sitting on good bottles of wine was “crack that s__t open!” So now when I get a good bottle of wine and we’ve got company, I crack that s__t open! :o)

QOD: burger wine! Could be an older Barnett cab, could be Palazzo della Torre, could be my other Cuvee Romaine CdR (if it ain’t corked), could be Clos Fremur, could be Thackrey Pleiades, could be Irouleguy!

I dunno. I’m open to suggestions.

QOTD- A friend of mine is having her aniversary tasting this weekend at her wine shop, 100 wines open for tasting- so I have no idea which one(s) will be opened this weekend. Maybe something from the Iron Horse shipment I got yesterday?

The Santa Rita Hills really do produce some fantastic pinot noir. Babcock, Sanford, Mellville- and if your ever driving through call a winery called Clos Pepe (do a search on the internet for it- their site has some fantastic info on the area). He’s a super nice guy, and his pinot noir is high calibar stuff.

I’ve been a huge pinot noir fan for years. 10 years ago I used to be able to buy a very good pinot from Carneros (Napa) California for less than $10. Now you can’t touch it for less than $25. THANKS SIDEWAYS! morons.

    Holy smoke batman…

QOTD: 2005 Four Vines Maverick … because my sweetheart is back in Sacramento, so close to Amador (Amateur) County, CA.

  • Some food for thought my friend…style issue is certainly where taster subjectivity diverges amongst ‘high quality premium’ wines at either end of the spectrum; having said that, your feelings on the TEN are most likely indicative of your tasting YOUNG wines…it’s certainly more ambitious, fatter, w/ more body and a more flamboyant wood treatment…but something tells me 3-4 years from now (w/ complete integration and evolution kickin’ in) that the TEN would be your favorite of the bunch. Botella is always the most approachable of the trio…2 cents for yer JerzyAss!

drinking some much neglected much maligned delicious California Cabs

Plumpjack, Caymus and who knows what else

    with big juicy drippy burgers….

maybe the last pinot is built best for aging with all that glass

    I heart Sea Smoke.

Gary, sorry (sort of) for putting the screws to you yesterday!

    Gary,
Gotta love Pinot. Sorry I have been away so long, I promise to show the love.

QOTD – Elderton Riverina Botrytis Semillion 2005 (gotta sweet tooth) first Botrytis I’ve had.

    Have a great weekend.

GREAT episode today Vaynerchuk. Never had a Sea Smoke but I’m really glad to hear that they live up to their hype (so many things don’t). I still don’t care enough about them to pay the inflated after market price but still…QOTD: My Summerland wine club selection is ready so I do believe that I will be driving up the coast and drinking a little Summerland Pinot Noir. Have a great weekend GV and everyone else leaving a comment.

  • Gary, one of these days you should give some love to Anderson Valley for their pinots: Londer, Goldeneye, Esterlina, etc.

QOTD: 2006 Trefethen Dry Riesling; Londer 2004 Paraboll Pinot Noir

Nice show Gary. I’m not really into Pinot, but I would love to try a Sea Smoke and see what all the hype is about.

QOTD: Tonight Iâ??m drinking the 1998 Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura with some homemade spaghetti alla carbonara!

  • QOTD: 2005 – Tantara Bien Nacido “Old Vine” Pinot Noir. Everyone MUST try.

I’ve done the “blind tasting” parties plenty of times… for some reason a 2 buck chuck never comes in last 🙂 (recommend this to all lurkers, it’s rudiculous fun)

On the dinner thing however, I dont think I want to open a nice bottle to share with 6 people… 4 maybe. Unless ofcourse I had more than one bottle of that same wine.

I love the “special bottle dinner idea.” However, it doesn’t just have to be with a special bottle. When I was studying in Rome, I lived in an apartment with 5 classmates and an enormous dinner table and we used to have dinners where we’d invite a couple people over, everyone helped make something, and we’d open a couple of 3-5 euro bottles we picked up at the grocery store. These were some of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had and actually the reason I got into wine in the first place.

    QOTD: I don’t know yet.

    Woah. Seaaaaaaaaa Smmmmmoke.

You should have really reviewed them considering their REAL selling price. I’m pretty sure their mailing list has been full for a long time now.

Is the Botella really worth it at $70+?????? I would spend $40 on it, but I’m not so sure about $70. Calera, Etude, Drouhin, Patty Green, etc are all available for so much less. Even that Hammond NZ pinot you had awhile back. I feel like I would rather have a half case of that for the same price. Oh, I regret not buying more….

  • Gary,

I have finally had a chance to watch my first episode of WLTV in almost 5 months! Landscaping in Minnesota is pretty brutal – get it in before the snow flies! Speaking of Minnesota…..Your boy Justin is doing pretty good in the HR department, but we are waiting for the rest of the Twins bats to get into action. Anyways….while we are waiting for another Pennant I will take some of the profits and buy some of Gary’s favs! I will be watching past episodes to get the hot items. Keep the wine world happy – Stay online!

Here’s to a CKC not being a lurker anymore! Great show, love the couch, love New York (even though I’m in the South…long story), and am beginning to love wine. Keep up the great work, and I’ll leave more profound, coherent comments in the future.

  • Jake

Funny rant at the beginning but even better rant at the end. Nice thoughts about wine being enjoyed, and bringing people together.

A blind tasting sound like a great idea. Definately a good excuse to bring some people together and have some fun. Also revealing to see what happens when people rely only on their palates.

qotd – Riesling. There’s a heat wave here in NC as I’m sure there is up in Jersey and I have been thinking riesling for some cooling refreshment. Ah riesling. For some reason I want it to be from Germany. So I don’t care if it’s Blue Nun (hee hee!) I am going to be sipping on some refreshing German riesling — over ice cubes! that might be a wine shocker, I don’t know — in this hot weather this weekend.

Dude, your comment on the color being more of what you would expect for 100% Pinot Noir and less like a Syra, what do you mean? Can you elaborate what the differance would be????? Nobody wants a full on class room, as that would be no fun! But a little more info would be cool. Thanks dude!

Thank you so much for this episode. I’ve been very patient with my SS allocation, and it’s good to know it will be worthwhile.

Really great sounding Pinots………too bad their out of my price point, but I think the first one is worth looking into.

QOTD: TBD…….we go out for dinner every Sat. night, so I’ll have to wait and see what pops.

Enjoyed the show. We’re not likely to get into that price range in the near future. In fact, Carl finds it a personal challenge to find interesting wines in the under $15 range.
