Loving Daily Grape, GV. This is the first WLTV episode I’ve watched since it came out. Wanted to go OLD school.

QOTD: Imaginary story: yesterday, I walked into Wally’s to say hello to Manuel, their Italian buyer. Lo and behold, there was Gary, doing his own zoomie zooms with the wine bottles. I got to taste some Palo Lato Chard with him and shoot the s*** with him about all the great wine stores in the world and how I’m loving his new show. I bought him a bottle of Chinon to taste and then hit the road.

    Hey Gary,
one really great episode ! I love Pauillac, and for three years now, we go there every year to taste and buy wine. I have also ordered ’06 futures for the Pichon Comtesse so I am happy now to hear what a great wine it is. Since I haven’t tasted it before….
Keep on going for the next 300 shows !

  • ZGray

Great show Gary. I’m starting to learn more and more about French wines. Nice cork throw. Looking forward to the next 300 shows! I like the iPhone giveaway

QOTD: You can lead a horse to water … I’ve been trying to spread the love about WLTV like cheap wine …

I have two ideas about a contest 1) Show a picture of a vineyard and have people try to guess where it is. Give a clue each day until someone guesses the place in the comments section. Kinda of like the contest in travel magazines to identify a place from a picture. 2) taste a wine in a brown paper bag each day, you know the wine but the Vnacks don’t. Based on your tasting description alone see who can guess the wine in the comments section. Change wines each day and give the answer of the previous day’s wine.

  • Gary,

Good episode, enjoyed it. I like the plum wrapped in bacon, sounds delicious.

Contest idea: I don’t have one.

QOTD: I abhored alcohol up until the moment I was introduced to WLTV and Gary Vaynerchuk, at which point my position changed and I became a huge devotee to the wide wide world of wine! Now I tell all my friends who like wine about it, and have gotten people from every different part of my life interested in WLTV too!

Gary, sorry I couldn’t watch yesterday and have to leave my comment late. By the way, it’s good to hear that you read the comments. We need to hear that from time to time. I know you are inundated by comments and emails and can’t respond to everything, but as you often say, it’s all about community. So we need to know that our comments are read, not just counted, as much as you need the comments to keep coming. (Do you also read the comments that show up very late? Would it be worth leaving comments when I watch old episodes from before I became a regular viewer?)

I found this episode very interesting. I haven’t been all that keen on Bordeaux lately, but you convinced me to give them another try. I certainly have enough of them in my basement. Unfortunately, we have let most of them age for longer than we should have, due to misunderstandings about what wines to age and for how long. The really high end Bordeaux will age for a very long time, but I couldn’t (and can’t) afford those. For the lesser Chateaux, I find that aging really brings out the green pepper component, and my wife and I aren’t so fond of that. I know you like that, though. I have some 1978 Lynch Bages that has massive green pepper. Come over for dinner next time you are in Chicago and we’ll crack open some bottles.

QOTD. I wish I had a funny Wine Library story, but at the moment all I have is a sad one. I have a niece and a nephew in New York who are interested in wine, but are inexperienced with it and have very little money. (They were CKC’s until only recently.) Trying to persuade them that good wine doesn’t have to be prohibitively expensive, I had Wine Library send each of them a box of inexpensive wine that you had reviewed favorably. Also, trying to make Vayniacs out of them and to start some conversations about the wine, I emailed them with links to the episodes where you had reviewed each wine. Unfortunately, a few days later their father fell seriously ill. We are hoping for a full recovery, but he is on a long and difficult road, and wine is the last thing on anybody’s mind right now.

GV congrats on # 300!! top it off with a great poo-yak show! You made a California man look for some poo, GV.

IPHONE Contest: what the phone screams to me is wallpaper!! Contest: email your best Vayner-wallpaper, it can be a digital picture or drawing of some kind, but it MUST be WLTV related and specific to the show. The person with the most creative wallpaper wins the iphone and the wallpaper will be available to download to other Vaniac’s on the WLTV website.

If that doesn’t work, just a round up a group of Vaniacs, who ever can gulp down a gallon of milk wins.

GREAT episode. I am fairly new to LBTV and I came on board at episode 274. I am lovin it. The Iphone thingy; what about a combination entry requirement of maybe comments made towards episodes along with wine purchases and or maybe taking part in some of the givaway requirement stuff that goes on. Maybe a photo contest!!! Thanks Gary for making a few minutes out of my day something really special. Billr

As far as the IPhone goes; maybe a combination of comments towards episodes along with wine purchases and or maybe taking part in one of the WLTV givaways. Hey Gary –

Since you need all those two cents, I’ll chime in FOR THE FIRST TIME. That’s right, Gary, you just won over another LURKER! Great episode, really enjoyed it. I’m enjoying how accessible you’re making wine to people who weren’t into it before.

I really enjoyed my first trip to WL a couple weeks ago, you have a fantastic store and your employees did a great job helping me out. I knew you’d have a tremendous selection of wine, but I was amazed by the gourmet department, I picked up some killer cheese to pair with wine.

One thing I’d really like to see in the stores or on the Thundershow is Richard Hamilton wines – they’re a great Australian producer with both a single vinyard reserve line at about $30, and a regular line in the $15 range, both reds, red blends and whites. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on the Centurion Old Vines – maybe as part of an episode on “old vine” wines. I’m very interested in the effect of the age of the vines on the wine. Many of the Rioja vinyards I’ve read about recently stress the age of their plants, and I wonder how much of this is competitive marketing (because they have the old vines and other growers don’t!) and how much is fact grounded in science.

A good idea for one of the next 300 episodes? I think so!

  • Gary,
My boyfriend is active duty in the Army with a busy schedule, so he doesn’t watch Wine Library TV. We watched an episode together one day a few months ago when he was on leave, and he loved it! He still quotes “GV” to me all the time. He asks me if the wine I’m drinking brings out the Oakmonster. I always share the new “GV” jokes with him – Our personal favorite is the Oak Kangeroo.
Thanks for such a great show.
If you ever do shoutouts to our troops, his name is Jimmy and he’s in Fort Carson, Co.

  • Don’t knock it: Whatever gets people to buy. Buy it for the label today, buy it again for the juice tomorrow. So many people are new to wine, and fun labels make the subject of wine less stuffy.

QOTD: My hubby emailed me a link to your blog months ago, but it wasn’t until I was on cork’d that I viewed your blog. All those episodes I missed! Do you ever get out to the trade shows in NYC? Martin Scott – one of my fav’s is coming up!

QOTD: I don’t really have a funny WLTV story, so instead, here is the World’s Funniest Joke (according to wikipedia – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_funniest_joke):

A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: “My friend is dead! What can I do?” The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: “Just take it easy. I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy’s voice comes back on the line. He says: “OK, now what?”

    Gary,

I never have posted here. I often post on the forum. Since Gary is begging us to post, I am posting!

Pauillac makes some wonderful wines. I have drank the Reserve de la Comtesse many times over the years. It has been a great buy. Pichon Baron used to be cheap in the early days of my wine drinking ($10-12). Even at 60 bones it is a winner. Pichon Lalande used to be well under $20, too. I miss those days.

As for contests and phones, I would have a treasure hunt: “Find the Phones.” Put a picture of the phone on the html page with a specific wine. Put it out there for 1 or say even 10 (or whatever number) of wines in your inventory. The first person who finds and then cuts and pastes the URL for 1, 3, 5 or all 10 (or whatever number) of the places you put the phonme picture with the wine bottle and emails it to you wins. The contest would start at a predetermined time.

  • Something that I have been wanting to see is the GV Score on wines when I go to the store. I was thinking a way to increase numbers would be have a Bottle Tag and/or a Shelf Tag that the nation can print out and post in my local wine shop and grocery stores that will point people to Wine Library TV for the video review of that wine. It would both give someone a score and a great informational video. I can badge you up on my website and I would like to badge you up at my local stores.

QOTD: I see one of my subordinates on his break on WLTV. As I walk by he quickly changes the webpage to something else. When I ask him what site he was on (to bust his chops), he reluctantly tells me. I laugh at his momentary discomforture, then we have an hour and a half conversation about wine (thankfully a slow day). He now has his wine shipped to work, a. knowing that there is always someone there for the signature, and b. so his wife doesn’t find out how much he spends on wine. She once called from the lobby, to visit him at work and I had a hearty laugh as he frantically hid several bottles of wine about the office.
I now joke with him when he is on vacation that I will test all his WLTV shipments to make sure they are OK for him to drink….

QOTD: While I am from the great state of Wisconsin (aka the Tundra), I have no cool stories about meeting random Vayniacs while walking through the woods… Sounds like a poem by Robert Frost to me…

In any case, I’ve been mentioning your efforts to work associates, and also friends who enjoy wine.

What I’ve learned is that there are lots of wine enthusiasts out there, and new enthusiasts at that (myself included), so it’s a wonderful thing to be able to refer fellow wine fans to a great resource such as this.

The show is much appreciated, and glad to know that my fellow Badgers are not just drinkin’ Miller Lite.
