  • Poopalicious!

Funny, a reviewer on CellarTracker (which I hope to not be using after Corkd is done with its upgrade) described the syrah’s bouquet as a, “Wonderful nose of red flowers and macerated raspberries” What?!? No poop? Ah, the joy and mystery of wine.

QOTD: Many very good ones–but no one that stands out as my fav.

  • QOTD: Washington wines all over the place with Chat. Ste Michelle. Their reisling is my house white refresher and they have some excellent red wines in the mix. I’ve also had a few pinot noirs from Wash., but names fail me.

qotd: haven’t had a whole lot of WA wines, but so far, definitely the Eroica.

    Fun ep.
At a recent Vayniac tasting in Seattle we shared some Washington thunder: a Sorenson 2003 Cab Franc, 100% I believe; a 2004 Silver Lake Cab/Merlot blend out of Rattlesnake Hills; a 2003 Betz, their Clos de Betz blend, from Columbia Valley; and a 2003 Reininger Syrah out of Walla Walla. All serious wines, all interesting approaches. Washington is producing distinctive, unique flavor profiles harder and harder to find in Cali. Good juice.

QOTD – First one that comes to mind is Eroica. It’s obviously awesome, and a crowd pleaser.

  • QOTD (now that I’ve listened to the question): No favorites stand out. I know I’ve had at least a handful of great Washington wines, but I can also remember a few dogs, too. Will have to get a couple for the weekend.

  • Thank you for differentiating between “terroir” and “vegetal, earth flavors.” Great episode today.

QOTD: Terra Blanca 2002 Reserve Syrah. Concentrated? Oh yeah! Blueberries all day long. Steve-O, you know what I’m talking about.

Gary — Pepper Bridge 2001 Cab. Got it from Woot for $30/bottle, $5 shipping for the lot. If I knew how much I liked it, I would have gotten more.

QOTD: I’ve had many really good Washington wines, the most recent stand-out was the 2003 Chateau Faire le Pont Syrah. I’m also a big fan of the Vin du Lac wines.

Great show, you don’t fail to deliver the fun. I don’t know who else could sniff a dirty diaper with a smile on his face! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good luck to your Jets, but the Patriots are going to be unstoppable this year on their trek to their third Super Bowl victory. I hope Randy Moss is able to play.

QOTD: I’ve only had one Washington state wine, Columbia Crest, and wasn’t to thrilled. What I’m I waiting for? Nothing, really. There is so much wine to try and I’m only coming up on the end of my first year into wine. But it’s a great thing because I have SO much to look forward to!

When I see Robert Parker or Jancis Robinson describe a wine as smelling like a fart, then I’ll KNOW you’re (I mean we’re) changing the wine world.

QOD – As a WA resident, I’ve had a lot of good ones, though lately I’ve been too hit with sticker shock to pony up the dough. Most memorable to date has been a Leonetti Merlot that I would have pegged as Italian in a blind tasting. Great juice.

Thx for the tips on backwater wineries MagmumGourmet. Widgeon Hill is another WA winery that is totally under the radar (probably because it’s tiny) but is making terrific reds.

Good show! QOTD: Chat. Ste Michelle Merlot and Waterbrook cab. are the only one’s I remember being decent.

  • Karl Laczko

I liked the description of the Cab-Franc, even though you did try to play it down, and the Cab-Sauv sounded delicious but the Merlot did nothing for me.
The Syrah came across as the best of the bunch by far, some of those smell descriptions, Oh Boy!

QOTD – Only had one, Ste. Michelle Cab-Sauv (a present). Not bad, looking for more examples of the State. Washington Wines sound great, but not so easy to get over here, but I’ll keep looking.

Another good epsode…a good weekend of episodes, including Vayniak Nation Communal wine, etc.

Please explain, e.g., Robert Parker/Stephen Tanzer/etc. reviews a 200x Bordeaux which costs $20-30, says good things about it and rates it an 87 or 88, and you review the Chatter Creek Cab Franc for the close to the same price, give it an 89, and tell us to pass on it. I always thought an 89 was a fairly good score. Is there any correlation among 89-rated wines that are Bordeaux, Cabs, Temperanillos, Chardonnays, etc., which cost $15, $20, $35, etc? How can we interpret similar scores across wine varietals and price? points?

QOTD: It’s a tough one. Lots of good wine in Washington, but if I were forced to choose, I’d pick Cayuse (2003 and 2004) Syrah. One of the only Walla Walla Valley AVA wines to make it out of the freeze.

QOTD: I have yet to really get into the Washington state wines yet. Been planning on it and I believe after this show I probably should go out and give them a whirl.
