I said GOD DAMN!!! 1988 Beausejour-Becot. Now you’re speaking to me, my friend! THESE are the kind of wines that America needs to be waking up to and I’ve been saying it for years. I really hope you keep these kind of wines on the show often. People don’t seem to have nearly enough respect for them!

    QOTD:
My favourite new discovery is in 3 parts. They were recently discovered by me at a tasting. They are Chateaux Destieux (SEGCC), Dufort-Vivens Margaux (2GCC), and Ferriere Margaux (3GCC). All stunning and all QPR kings.

Beau-sejour Becot and an older vintage for $70/per. what are you doing to my wallet??? and yes, i like what i like – i am an old dog and new tricks can hurt. my Sasha order speaks about me too – hey, who are you Mr Patriot act looking up our order profiles – j/k.

NYJ and NYG both with hobbled QB’s – yuck. what is the O/U for combined wins this season? 10-11 maybe? at least the NYY are finishing with class.

QOTD. Not entirely sure. A recent new wine try that worked out well is 2006 Zantho Muskat Ottonel from Burgenland, Austria. I guess this really counts as a re-try, because I had had a dry muscat before that didn’t really impress me the way the sweeties do (e.g., Moscato d’Asti). (Remember the Dolcetto lesson — don’t try a varietal just once and think you know what it’s like.) Anyway, this Zantho comes on with a floral-peach-melon nose that makes you think it’s going to be sweet, and then it hits you with a wall of bone dry, slightly frizzante, high high acidity that scrapes the curry right off your palate and gets you ready for the next bite. Very interesting.

    Hey Gary;
tried my first Gruner Veltliner and it was spectacular! Summerer 2006 austrian. liked it so much; I ordered a top line kit and am going to make a batch for myself (30bottles; 23 liters)! BTW, that is a great way to try out new varietals; make them yourself; the top quality kits of sterile must with or without skins now are super, and the quality (particularly on white wine) is well beyond what your expectations may be! good luck on the cab!
    yamas!

Gary, Nice EP. I’m not disagreeing with the point that some older wines still have plenty of life left and may get equal or higher ratings from critics when retasted 10 years later, but I’ve also seen lower ratings reflecting that the wine didn’t have the stuffing originally thought. Regarding the viewer question on Silver Oak in particular, I’ve had them older and have yet to find one beyond 10 or 11 years beyond release date that was not starting the downward slide. That said, I’m envious of your description on the Beausejour-Becot — there are few things more charming or distinctive than a beautfully made claret that is in its second or third stage of evolution. QOTD: Lychee nuts

    Gary-
havent left a comment in awhile. i finally have internet in my new place. gotta catch up on some episodes. Nice ep and good point to drive home.

QOTD: Had my first Vouvray finally last weekend. 2005 Champalou and I thought it rocked. It had a ton of complexity for a 15 dollar wine. Have you gotten a chance to try it?

Hope all is well and have a great weekend.

When I was in Southern Spain I tried some Finos. They were great. My expectation of Sherry was built on Harvey’s Bristol Cream. I just could not imagine drinking that in the heat of Southern Spain, but the Fino and Manzanilla were great. I learned a lot, despite my biases.

New wine has been Pinot’s from Burgundy, god they’re good. I believe aging is the only thing that adds those layers of taste you discussed here. They’re not all meant to be opened young and green. Aging adds character, just ask any 50 year old.

QOTD – I tried a 2005 Viognier from Jewel Collection in Acampo, CA. I was totally blown away by the flavor (peach/apricot) and finish. I can still feel it (in my mind) seven days later. Only 10 bones!

I really like your message GV. I’ve gone from buying wines by scores in bulk to buying individual bottles for areas I’ve never heard of and grapes I’ve never had- I find it much more interesting, enjoyable, and fun. QOTD: morning report. I always thought I hated it. Went twice this week. Really like it.

Cardio Kick-Boxing. I thought it would be cheesy…but it was fun getting aggressions out on the punching bag. My legs and abs are so sore, I can barely get out of a chair. One of those things I thought I’d never do….but really glad I did.

QOTD: Took your advice and tried Albarino. Went out for Chinese (they don’t deliver out here in the sticks) and had the Burgans 2005 Albarino afterward. Very nice.

Gary, a little bit of YOU is already changng my wine world, and I thank you!

Something new?? How about something old? Tried an older Red Burgundy with a good friend- 22 yr old Grand Cru that just rocked our world. My friend is the Owner/Winemaker of Fernwood Cellars – Santa Cruz Mtns appellation winery. He makes big reds from his vineyards, so I like to share elegant, graceful reds when we get together- mostly Bordeaux or Spanish Riojas- this Grand Cru was wonderful. Had bright fruit and no browning. We took about an hour to drink it… never fell apart like older wines can (ie. Napa Cabs!).
    Cheers Gary!

QoTD: It’s not exactly new, but newish; making my own goat cheese which is a whole lot easier than
I thought it would be to make and so…I Mean SO much better than what you get in the market (even the high end ones).
As far as wines go, thanks to my sweet husband, we try something different every weekend so much of the time we forget what it was we had. And it’s not always rewarding. That’s why we like listening to your recommendations!

  • Nice, brief episode. QOTD: Sangiovese Rose from Napa. Silverado’s Sangiovese Rosato was a huge surprise. I haven’t been digging the Sangiovese out of California, probably because I like it from where it grows best, Tuscany. Anyway, the Rose was on the tasting list on a recent trip to Napa, and it was awesome. I would not have tried it otherwise, and I actually found a few more out there. Very nice to see Rose making some headway out there. This one is great, one of my favorites at Silverado that day.
