    wow. Virginia got the smackdown.

qotd: don’t think I’ve ever had an American wine made outside of the big 4. I ordered a NJ Pinot Noir from WL a little while ago, but it was SOLD OUT. Is Jersey PN really bringing that much thunder? Somehow I doubt it.

I visited a winery call Silver Coast in North Carolina. They source fruit from NC, but more form Georgia. They had a Touriga Nacional (not sure of spelling, but one of the big grapes that goes into port) table wine that was very interesting. There is also some wine from Kinkead Ridge in Ohio that makes some nice wines.

This is most assuredly one of my favorite episodes simply because you, Gary, are so completely out of it. I do feel sad, so here is a little comment love and some smilies to cheer you up … even though you in London and it’s Tuesday and not Monday but it actually is Monday. Whatever. And I can’t really answer the QOTD because I’m such a wine newbie.

And did I make the top 10? Sweet!

    🙂 🙂 🙂 =) =) =)

I may be part of the ABC club…but sometimes they can bring it (thunder).

Had a great Chard this summer from Napa’s Brown Estate and it had the common oak & butter profile that I don’t normally care for (usually go for the crisp, unoaked Chardonnay if I do drink them). But this one was real good…tasted amazing!!

Now, to check out some Virginia wine… 8)

YES!!! I actually like those kind of shows. I love it. Hmmm, well, let’s see. This burnt to a crisp steak tastes much better than this pile of dog poop and maggot infested road kill.

You think VA wines are bad, lemme send you some of the Texas wines.

sorry you kinda struck out with the virginia wines. ah well. la grange is a good producer. to those reading looking for some decent virginia chardonnays, i’d recommend:
    veritas’ harlequin reserve
    veritas’ chardonnay saddleback (no oak)
    horton’s chardonnay black cat
    tarara chardonnay

    all pretty decent.
QOTD: Best wine outside of the big five i’ve ever had was the 2004 Barboursville Vineyards Nebbiolo Reserve, followed closely by the Barboursville Octagon. Those wines really opened up my eyes to the potential of Virginia wines.

QOTD: I have tried many wines from Texas because I live there. They are not very good. Perhaps the best were a Becker viognier and a Haak port — but I have had far better vionier and port from elsewhere.

I have heard great things about Norton varietal wines from Missouri, but cannot find any national distributors of Missouri wines.

Maybe the big 4 are the big 4 for a reason.

QOTD: I actually had an interesting Cab Franc from Virginia. It was a while ago, so I don’t remember the name/vintage. The only others I’ve tried have been some random NJ ones…and I like to pretend that I never tried those ones.

I’ve been really impressed with many of the white wines coming out of Virginia lately. Some of the reds have been great, too, although they’re a bit harder to find amidst the garbage.

White Hall Vineyards makes particularly impressive wines, IMO.

Okay, now to watch the show. Hopefully they don’t all suck after I talked them up!

  • Dr T from N. Carolina

Nice to see some East Coast wines, even if two were not well reviewed. I tried to support my local winery when I lived in New Orleans, and am trying the same here in North Carolina, but it isn’t always easy. As for the best US non-big 5 state wines. . . .

Gruet Brut (New Mexico)very nice middle of the road sparkler
Lakeridge Crescendo (Florida) — more of a spumante-style sparkler

I’ve had decent table wines from Pontchartrain Vineyards (Louisiana), Buckingham Valley (Pennsylvania), and Westbend Vineyards (N. Carolina) for under $13, but none really outstanding (and a number of disappointing wines from other producers)

  • QOTD – We’ve got some good wines down here in OK, but we just can’t ship them out of state except to wholesalers. My personal favorite right now is Sparks Vineyard’s Ruby Cabernet.

Hows everything bud…sorry the wines sucked for you today!!

QOTD: The best bottle of wine I have had to this day is a wine called “Jeckel” I am not sure what the vintage was or where it was from…the only thing I know about it is that it was a meritage.
We baught this bottle at Capital Grille about 2 years ago and WOW was it polished bottleof wine!!
