QOTD: Carlson Cherry wine. In your face bing cherry bomb fruit pie sweetie from Grand Junction (Palisades), Colorado

I’ve never had an american wine! They are not very popular in Europe, and quite expensive 🙂

Ooh hell, I’m lying! Some cheap Beringer wine which was horrible… For now I’m exploring the more uncommon european regions, where a lot of value can be found.

I trust my own tastebuds 😀

QOTD: Can’t remember the name of the winery, but I had a very tasty simple Merlot
from Idaho a number of times several years ago. It was available in the SF Bay Area
    and was around $11-12, IIRC.
Just as an aside to this topic, my brother has been to the winery on Maui.

Ah well, 1 out of 3 is better than a goose-egg.

QOD – Best US wine I’ve had from outside the Big 4 was actually a Virginia wine – White Hall Petit Verdot. Boy, was that tasty. First time I’ve smelled violets and honey together, yum!

Hey cool episode! I would definetly like to see this show go more in depth with the unsung states. How about places like Idaho, Texas, and Michigan?

  • Derek

Sorry the wine sucked for you today pal…

QOTD: The best bottle of wine that I had to this day was a bottle called “Jeckel” I dont remember where it was from or the vintage but was I do know is that it was a meritage. I had it at Capital Grille about 2 years ago.

QOTD, take 2: Hey!! I didn’t know British Columbia wines were eligible!
I’ve had tons of good BC whites, and a few good reds and sparklers, too.
It feels to me like the reds are about 10+ years behind the whites in quality
    development.

By the way, we were visiting Texas wineries outside Austin in 1998,
and one of them poured us their Cabernet Suavignon to taste right
*before* their Sauvignon Blanc. Very strange – never seen a winery do that.

QOTD: quite a few have been memorable. Gruet Sparkling (esp. demi sec-quite dry actually) Wines are some of the best in America, and are made in New Mexico, as are the Vivac line (the Cab and Dolcetto are poppin’) which are produced by the most exciting young winemakers in our fair state. The best wine produced outside the 4 has to be the Viognier made by sutcliffe winery in Colorado. A little hazy with protein, but thunderous fo’ sho’ yo. Jon Sutcliffe, and his winery, will be fast rising stars-mark my word, ya heard. He makes a pretty mean chard, as well as some huge and hot (around 16%) reds that somehow are still excellent. GV-check him out, Southern Wine and Spirits are a courtin’ the man, and might take him national. Oh yeah, he makes an excellent rose. Ever try wines from Baja’s guadalupe valley? L.A. Cetto and Jubileo (sp?) are quite nice, and available (or were when I was in the nyc) at Astor.

QOTD: I’ve had nothing that excites me from any other state, but the big 4. and I think that’s what you are really asking,, not other countries.

🙁 Really hope you get back from London, had some good tea, and come back fired up and ready to go. Not to pile on,,, but you’re bumming the hell out of me!

As a current VA resident (who grew up 15 mins away from WL), you’re tasting the wrong varieties! Granted, it’s not your fault, because that’s what you were sent, but Chardonnay’s not the VA grape (any more than Petite Sirah should be grown anywhere in NY State). They do a lot with norton and horton down here, but they’re both pretty disgusting.

What you should seek out down from VA (in terms of varietals) are the Cab Francs, and the Viogniers. They’re both pretty nice. Barboursville (served to the British royalty on their most recent visit by the governor; one of the few places that actually does Cab Sauv correctly), Valhalla (viognier, GREAT alicante bouschet believe it or not), and Chrysalis (viognier) are some of the better producers of wines in general. I’ve been to 3 wine fairs here down here over the last year, and I haven’t even heard of those producers… so they’re small, even in the VA wine scene.

Don’t let this turn you off to VA wines — there are some serious values, and some seriously good wines. Just not these — not by a long shot.

  • Outside the big four states? I’ve had a Texas wine years ago that was all right; I was passing by the winery in Texas, but I don’t remember the name. Then I lived in New Mexico for four years, having this and that, but cannot really remember the wine, so I guess it wasn’t memorable. That said, I am myself getting involved with a new vineyard in Connecticut, where I live, but it is still a few years away from any wine worthy of bottling.

  • I had a good VA wine once – a Barboursville Rose, actually. Now I’m from VA, but I’m not a giant VA wine drinker, really. I’ve only had about two or three VA wines in my life.

    Gary Gary Gary….

First off how can you bring any kind of your normal THUNDER to your show..with your JETS loss hangover…Good thing this wasn’t the first WINE LIBRARY TV episode I have seen…but think of the new viewers ..OK?? BTW, I am a live long Redskin fan …”so I feel your pain” (insert Bill Clinton voice)

That being said you were pretty spot on with the state of the wine industry here in Virginia.
Only about one in three will compare with west coast offerings. And I know you were subject to only trying the wines sent in…but Grey Ghost ..yeuchh…I am thinking some vintner vayniac from North Carolina or NY sent that in to torpedo the show. I think you will have to do another one someday…and hopefully it will feature better Chardonay efforts like Naked Mountain Unfiltered (my QOTD pick) or better yet a Cab Franc ( see Octagon by Barboursville..served to Queen Elizabeth this summer) or a Viogner which better suites the Old Dominion.

🙁 Not a very good showing from Virginia today. Have never had a wine from Virginia.

QOTD: Don’t think I have ever had a bottle from outside the big 4. Interesting. I had never really given that much thought. I am going to be in Santa Fe,NM for the holidays this year and may try some of their wine. I hear there are some potential up-and-comers from NM.

    Sensei….

Do not plan to do multiple episodes on the day after a Jets game! Especially if you are going to be so down….

First, you had one of the best wines you have tasted in five years during Mondays episode!!! That is something to get fired up about!

Get up, dust yourself off and get back in the game!!

Student now trying to help Master…:)

Hope your trip goes well, have fun, be safe and come back in a better mood!

Considering how the Jets’ season has turned out so far, should we just stop watching WLTV until they win one for GV?

That said, I heard Viognier is the white to drink from Virginia.
