Considering how the Jets’ season has turned out so far, should we just stop watching WLTV until they win one for GV?

That said, I heard Viognier is the white to drink from Virginia.

This was a pretty pathetic effort by GV, it almost seems you don’t want to do the show…

I’ve had some good LI wines, which I wouldn’t necessarily consider New York wines since they tend to be much different. I would say though that the Naga de la Nagual from Caduceus Vineyards has the best reputation–it is made by Maynard James Keenan and his vineyard team.

Why did WLTV never have him on???

QOTD: Haven’t had anything outside the big four. Oh wait I have, it was a wine from Hawaii and let me tell you. Hawaii should probably stick to Mai Tai’s. The wine was 50% red wine and 50% white wine. No joke that is what the label said on the back of this wine. I think this was supposed to be a rose effort. It was Volcano wine at its worst. At any rate I guess I haven’t had a good wine outside the big four. Time to seek some out!!!! Thanks Gary V.

Smoky Hill Vineyards Spaghetti Red from Kansas. I’ll give you one guess what we paired it with. It was nice to see that not all vino from my home state is crap. I gave it an 87 on the C-dub (that’s me? scale.

    Hey gary,
Im a big fan of the show. You have actually taught me to trust my nose on the more obscure aromas I get from some wines. After watching a past episode on Amarones, I was thinking to myself that it would be really cool to see you do an episode on sfrozato nebbiolo’s. Especially, Nino Negri 5 stelle, Rinaoldi, and Conti Sertoli Salis Canua. I love these wines, and I dont think to many people are down with them. Take care, greg

QOTD: Had a pretty decent Colorado wine called Verso Cab. I’ve gone on winery tours here in IN, but that was mostly for the volume back when I was a CKC, not for the quality.

…the oak monster cometh. Of course I have no chance of getting any of these wines in the UK, so it doesn’nt really matter that they sucked. (Especially as I had some lovely wine tonight with my meal…..in Sweden (no it wasn’t Swedish wine!)).

I loved the big pour there on the last one 🙂 (at least it tasted like wine!)

Feel for you Gary, sporting loss can be the worst, it’s a guy thing. Let the feelings out, it’s better to express your pain than holding it in!

QOTD. Not had anything outside of the big 3 (a New York (L.I.) is in the cellar waiting to become No. 4)

  • Hey Gary
WOW a show from Virginia, how excited was I to open up the show today and see Virginia in the title.

As a few Virginians have already stated, you really weren’t sent the best representation of the state’s chardonnays. Oh how i predicted your reaction to the Gadino cellars Barrel Select Chard, WOW the Oak MOnster is right, their regular chardonnay is a lot better and cheaper too. Gray Ghost’s strong point is their Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve which is really good, but still pricey and their desert wine which rocks, again Chardonnay is not their strong point. La Grange, this is a new joint effort from winemaker Chris Pearmund who was one of the pioneering winemakers here in the state. His Chardonnay and Merlot from his winery Pearmund Cellars are good and not as pricey as the stuff from La Grange.

A quick note to Loweel above, don’t discount the wineries that don’t go to the festivals here in Virginia, there are A LOT that don’t.

I agree with the other Virginians that the Viognier from our state has been kicking butt lately as well as the Cab Franc. But I will say that I have had stellar wines from a lot of varietals in the state, from various wineries. The problem here is that the wines are too overpriced, I hate to say it. Wineries to check out, Linden Vineyards – winemaker Jim Law rocks the house with Cab Blends, Chardonnay and even an awesome Sauv Blanc, Jefferson Vineyards – there reserve merlot is good and the Viognier Kicks ass, King Family Vineyards has an awesome Viognier and an awesome Meritage, as well as Barboursville Winery which makes really good wines but has the Italian money to back it up.

QOTD: Linden Vineyards – 2001 Glen Manor Red which is a blend of Cab Sauv, Petite Verdot and Cab Franc pretty equally.

    J DUB

Oops– I almost made it through without a plug for our small 200 case family winery Woodland Vineyard. I can send you some bottles if you want!!

QOTD: I’ve been loving Lake Michigan Shore rieslings these days. They suffer from the volume problem leading to overpricing as well, but Hickory Creek’s Estate riesling rocks my socks off. Check them out; there other wines are awesome too!

Can’t say that I have had an excellent bottle outside of CA or WA. Most tend to be very light or “young/green” for my tastebuds. There are a few that are ok – Chateau Elan from GA as an example and towards more recent vintages.

QOTD: Not leaving me a lot of leeway with that question. I haven’t really tasted any wines better than average from other regions. That being said, I’m from Texas and have tasted most of the wines from there. The best is the Becker Prairie Rotie. It is a S Rhone blend and offers a lot of varietal characteristics that let you know what it is. Its way to oaky, but damn near every winery in Texas uses all new oak…

BTW, a little fun fact. There is a winery in Texas that make a Double Barreled Cab. That means that age it in 100% new oak and then transfer it to age in yet ANOTHER 100% new oak cask after a year. Believe it or not I find the wine overoaked

  • Well, at least you gave three of them a shot. Maybe it won’t too far down the road when you have a Virginian wine you enjoy. I never had any, but I’m willing to try them. Thanks for being open minded.

  • Geoff

Glad to see you doing some Virginia wines. Haven’t finished the episode yet so i don’t know how they all fair, but good to see some VA love. I’ve personally not tried many VA wines myself, so it’s interesting to see how they do on WLTV.

  • QOTD: Sakonnet’s Vidal Blanc is a good wine grown and vinified near Newport RI. It has a nice medium body, good (but not edgy) acidity and a nice peachy apricot flavor profile. It is definitely a good wine available for under $12. http://www.sakonnetwine.com/
