  • I got very lucky and my local market sold me 2 1997 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Calamandrana for $4.99 each. I used my handy dandy Pocket PC Wine Guide and saw that the values were somewhere around $33 so I picked up the last 2 and drank 1. Nice floral notes with a rich ruby red color. I sipped this wine for close to 20 minutes and every taste had a different aspect to it. Blackberries, chocolate, cherries. It was fantastic. I look for good deals like this on Barolo as I can but not easy.

    Thanx Gary

    Great episode GV.

I have had a few barolos and I have been big fans of all of them. My first experience with Barolo was at Da Benito’s in Union. They have a really good wine list over there, and you can find some under-priced italian gems mixed in with some overpriced CA cabs. I had a ’98 Pio Cesare Barolo for like 65 bucks a couple of years ago that really impressed me. I ended up meeting pio boffa at wine library a year or two ago and he signed my a bottle of his 2001 barolo that i bought. i look forward to popping it in a couple of years.

I Love Barolo! I have a cellar full of them, mostly 2000 and 2001, so none that old. My favorite has been 1998 Mauro Molino Barolo Vigna Conca. I had this for my anniversery at Coach Insignia, in Detroit. Gorgeous nose on this wine.

GV- you hit it with the Barolo entry question. I told my wife the other day that we need to venture into that territory soon. It would be great to hear about some ‘starter’ Barolos that wont break the bank – if they exist.

I don’t remember having one, but I have two in my cellar that I got in Italy. I will try at least one before the end of the year. Thanks for reminding me that I need to drink these.

    Lurker, no more!

Not sure what to do with my 1995 Bovio Vigna Gattera: Drink now or later? With steak or with cheese? oh, the dilemma…

Had an amazing 1999 Bollinger La Grande Annee champagne last night – just figured I share that with you.

    Cheers!

2000 Cavallotto Barolo Riservo Vignolo, back in spring 2006, their 2001 Barolo Bricco Boschis is tremendous as well!

Watched this today and had bought some of the 2000 Bricco Rocche ‘Brunate’ and was inspired by Gary to open a bottle tonight with dinner — very good wine and half the price of the Bricco Rocche.

Really was getting good when we finished off the bottle! Almost Pinot like with a very nice ‘sniffy sniff’. First glass was lacking but it turned excellent as it warmed up. My wife thought it would have been a great match for fish — maybe the fruit in the 2000 showed through.

Thanks Gary I would have probably waited another 5 years before trying the first bottle without WLTV.

Barolo’s have long been my favorite, but they are just too high in cost for me–when I see a bargain, I snap it up, and haven’t been disappointed yet. I’ve made a few converts and we all lament the prices. Thanks for trying them.

A little cheaper than Barolo – try some Barbaresco – Nebbiolo grape from Piedmont region. Not as much structure, but more enjoyable as a great casual wine. Barbarescos are much better bets than Burgundies for the price.

First great Barolo I had was a 1989 Ceretto Bricco Rocche. The Barolo we ordered at the restaurant was nowhere to be found, so they gave us the Ceretto for the same price. I think we paid $80 about 10 years ago – it was totally worth it. I later got into the wine distributor game for Italian wines. One of the wines I view as transformational, along with a 1982 Domain Leflaive Puligny Montrachet out of Magnum…Awesome.

My first Barolo was in April 2006, and it woke me up to what wine could be. Chocolate, tobacco, earth, leather – I was blown away. Never had I tasted any wine so complex, so aromatic, or so pensive. At the time, I didn’t even know enough to write down what it was. All I remember is that it was a 1997 which was bought in Italy.

Barolo is my favorite wine. I’ve had this discussion with my wife several times. She prefers Barbaresco, I prefer Barolo, the King of wines.

I got hooked when we lived in Milan and visited Piemonte every month or two. My favorite is the 1995 Marialunga from Cascina Bruni, although the 1997 was outstanding as well. (Cascina Bruni also makes an outstanding Barbera). I still have a bottle in the cellar waiting to be opened. The 1997 Barolo Cannubi from Produttori di Barolo is quite good also. While my budget constraints are such that I cannot afford one of the big names (or even purchase good ones here in the states), these have been outstanding finds and values.

  • I can see the hills of Barolo from my one of my bedrooms. The Barolo Castle is a must visit…. with the wine tastings and the history and the cork screw museum near by, I would say it is a wine lovers dream. Not a cheap wine even if produced next door but still a wine worth exploring. This year 2007 is going to be a very good year. That is what the producers say at first glance….I guess we will know for sure in 5 years time…

Drinking our first Barolo. Michele Chiarlo Barolo Brunate 2001. First sip we weren’t impressed, but the more we drink it the more we like it. Exploding licorice. Really long finish! We, with a little bit of you, are changing the wine world.
