no barolos in my world yet

  • NG

Love barolo! It is tough to find barolo under $40, though so I drink a lot of other wines in between barolos.

I prefer to cellar them and have not opened a 2000 yet.

QOTD: 2000 Ca’ Bianca Barolo — yes, Gary, I’ve had a Barolo– my favorite wine.

How you like Thomas Jones now, at 1-7???

  • I had one recently that was a bit young – a 2002 – at Saffron Mediterranean Kitchen in Walla Walla, WA (on a whim). My boss asked 3 of us, Barbera or Barolo? – I immediately said Barolo, to which he replied, “you have expensive taste.” But he got it anyway! I have had one or two others – not recalling any names right now. . . when you work in a restaurant in wine country people offer you wine to taste all the time. Anyway we should have decanted it, it was tasty, but not life changing.

I have had, I think two, Barolos until I had the one that got me hooked….2001 Principiano Ferdinando Barolo Boscareto. Usually sells for about $59 at one liquor store by me. They had it on sale for $43 a few weeks ago……NICE. Haven’t seen it at wine libary though. I thought that was the bomb until I got a 1999 Azelia Barolo San Rocco…even better. Barolos has to be my second favorite type, second to amarones.

Recently (3 weeks ago) had a 1997 Giovanni Manzone Barolo Le Gramolere Reserva-it was like being touched by the hand of God–or some higher epiphany deity of your choice! Love barolos, and like burgundy, seek them out in the wine stores every day I have off work. Great show-thanks for trying some big hitters of a vintage that I spent too much on, but have been patient.

Great show and some fantastic advice for up and coming wine geeks; I am one and (thankfully) was told of barolos ten years ago…have been collecting and drinking them ever since…

“Don’t be scared of the brownish hue- embrace the brownish hue.” GV, I don’t think that can be said for much other than wine!! And what’s this with not shaving until the Jets win. What does your wife think of that? Did she have a say in it?

QOTD: Never had a Barolo, although I’ve had a few wines made with Nebbiolo from Piedmont.

QOTD: I’m a big fan of Barolo like you, G.V. My favorite Barolo that I had this year was Franco M. Martinetti Barolo Marasco 2000. Soooo floral, graceful, absolutely beautiful wine.

QOTD: Had one once in a wine tasting class a few years ago, and have wanted to try it again ever since! Very delish. A little above my price point. However, I have seen some at Total Wine (Cherry Hill & Delaware) for under $25. But I’m hesitant to try those. But now that I know the 2000 vintage is good, I’ll see if I can snag one of those that’s not too pricey.

QOTD – No, so far not had one. Got an Ascherivini in the cellar, but it’s a 2002, so at best I’m hoping for a basic intro into the style rather than anything more.

Have had one or two Barolos, none have stuck yet, the cellar has exactly zero. Recently I tried a Barbaresco that I enjoyed: Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2003. I don’t quite know the difference between Barbaresco and Barolo, both use nebbiolo, so is it a regional diff, or is it a production difference. I’m sure I could google search it, but I’m feeling lazy today.

Had a 1996 aldo Conterno Bussia on Tuesday night (my birthday). They are classics and there is nothing like the nose of an older Barolo.
