  • QOTD: Never had a Barolo that I can remember, but I’d sure like to try finding that Oberto. Maybe I’ll try to get it for my 26th birthday this weekend 🙂

QOTD – Never had a Barolo, although I love the sour cherry thing so I am intrigued. However, most are beyond my typical price point.

Great Barolo Show! It looks like the fuzzy Gary is back.

QOTD: Yes, had one 3 years ago. I remember it was a great wine & the next day looking Barolo up on the internet to find out what the heck it was. I learned Barolo is from Piedmont and that there were other wines from Italy besides Chianti & Bruenello. Havenâ??t had one since because of the price tag.

Haven’t had a Barolo but then again I’m CKC so it’s a bit out of my price range.

  • Tremendous show, THANKS!! QOTD: I’ve never tasted Barolo, although I have one in cellar. How can I get one of the new wristbands?? I’m a hard-core, long time, pure love Vayniac. I did send two pictures with the old wristband. I’ll send 10 with the new one.

  • QOTD: I’ve had a few, nothing over $30. I’ve typically been a little let down. Raisin and plum flavor profiles aren’t my bag, and I find that’s what they’ve delivered. Maybe I’m wrong.

I’m into Italian wines though. So many cool and underrated regions and varietals. I’ve found some treasures.

Recently in Piemonte on a terrific epicurean tour (hint, hint, Gary) and had a 1998 Bricco Rocche Barolo Riapo that was simply delicious. It had the copper brown rim in the glass described in this episode. What impresses me about Barolo is how much the nose reminds me of truffles. I mentioned this to a sommelier at a restaurant there and he said Barolo reflects the soil as do the truffles that grow in this area. I did not like the Barolos aged en barrique as this seemed to overwhelm the nebbiolo grape. The wines aged en botte (large Slovenian oak casks) were much more to my taste.

Alright Gary, I’ve got to call you out on this one, because combined events T&F is my sport. Dan O’Brian (who dominated the decathlon for about a 7-8 year stretch, and STILL holds the USA record, and the 3rd best point total ever) didn’t qualify in ’92 due to a tactical error on the pole vault; and Dave Johnson probably would’ve won gold but he suffered a stress fracture in his foot early in the first day at Barcelona, and competed the final 7 or 8 events with a broken foot — and STILL managed to win the bronze. Meanwhile, Dan was in a stretch of winning 3 consecutive World Championships (arguably just as important as the Olympics, to us track people) and of course won the gold in 1996. Google up the best decathlon scores for each year in the past few decades, and you’ll see Dan (& Dave) absolutely dominating the sport for nearly an entire decade. These sorts of ‘disappointments’ are the nature of the sport; this year at the WCs, Bryan Clay looked on pace to possibly break the world record, when an injury forced him out. Completing 10 events at a superlative level of effort is actually quite difficult to do without either causing injury to oneself, or committing a tactical error SOMEWHERE (as Dan did).

Whew. Sorry for the rant…. I love that sport (and hope to compete in it again, on the Masters T&F circuit), so I got to stick up for my boys.

QOTD: Never had a Barolo (yet). *whimper*

  • QOTD: I actually got in on the final blending for our nebbiolo, so I’m pretty familiar with the varietal. But I’ve never had the real-piedmont-deal
