Wow Gary, you were really on a roll today! I love Barbera, thanks for putting it back on my radar screen, it’s been gone too long.

  • john ripperger

Best one I ever had was a 98 Hastae Quorum. Not cheap ($75 retail) but a great barbera, loads of dark fruit although the acidity has started to fade recently on the wine. I think it has probably seen its best days by now.

Wow, can’t remember the last time you liked every wine in the episode. Nice!

QOTD: Never had a Barbera. I’ve been waiting for someone to yell and scream at me to try one…it’s just never happened.

  • Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat does a very nice Barbera from Bien Nacido Vineyard.

    Definitely recommended!

Thanks for the episode Gary. Unfortunately, the Massolino sold out in three seconds flat, but I did get my hands on a few bottles of the other two.

QOTD: Yes, I’ve had Barbera D’Alba a few times at enotecas in the city, but most were not that great in my opinion. Looking forward to trying these out!

QOTD: Are you kidding me? Take a look at my wine cellar. Those wines to the left of the long-term agers are over half barbera.

    Hey Gary,
Discovered your show last week. Been lurking since then, told a couple of friends to check you out. I’m addicted.
Anyway, Barbera! Yes. California State University Fresno has an Enology department that has been producing it’s own wines and most are fantastic. Even their $4 Tailgate Red is tasty on a weeknight. Seems like every year though, their Barbera is winning awards all over the state, so I’ve been drinking theirs, but now I’ll have to branch out to some of these. Hey how about a whole show on Fresno State? Check them out! http://www.fresnostatewinery.com

There isn’t a red wine from that part of Italy I haven’t enjoyed… barbera, dolcetto, nebbiolo, barolo.. Gary’s right… they’re all magnificent! I’ve been to Alba a couple of times while I was in college, I tried to bring home as many of these bottles as possible while managing to fit my clothes and books in my luggage. They are too good! Man I’m so glad to see these wines on your show!

  • Dr T from N. Carolina

Well, I’ve had Barbara d’asti, which I really like, and Barbara from California, which I haven’t. and, in this saw we learned what wine goes with raw cat. . . .

  • QOTD: I’ve had a number of Barbera bottles before….though I can’t remember whether I’ve ever had any d’Alba bottles.

I know I’ve had plenty Barbera d’Asti before, though. Mixed results, but mostly decent in my experience.
