  • QOTD: Barbera d’Alba is a top 6 favorite of mine. That being said, it has been a while since I opened one. I probably only have a couple in the cellar right now. I will open one soon.

  • question

I recently went to a tasting at my local wine shop, where the owner said Barbera is notable for its low tannins. I loved the wines, but wanted to know if the wines tried on this episode were unusually high in tannin for Barbera, or were they at the characteristic level.

Great show today, Gary. It’s good to see you so excited about all 3 wines.

QOTD: Yes, I’ve had a barbera, but it’s been quite a while, and I rather forgot about them.

    Thanks for the reminder.

Lover Barbera, I buy what is available around here (Helena, MT) which is not much.

QOTD: The 04 Giacomo Conterno Barbera D’Alba (I forget the designation) is really awesome, but a little pricey. I’ve had a couple of Barbera D’Asti, which seem to be lighter and a little easier to drink, plus they were less expensive.

Thanks, Gary. Again and again the show is educational and motivational (not sure if that is a word!). Keep them coming!

QOTD: I have actually had several Barbera wines…however most were California Barberas. Good episode. I am going to have to find a way to have wines shipped from you guys to Hawaii. Your prices are so much cheaper it is ridiculous.

Nobody puts Baby in a corner…Unless its Baby Barbera D’Asti, that’s ready for me to have a glass of any day of the week, especially with some good old Italian Food. Great stuff, but I’ve never had a D’Alba, lookin forward to one. Hey Gary, when are you gonna rock some wines made by winemakers whose names are Gary like Gary Farrell and the such? just a thought…And when are you gonna do a Jumilla/Monastrell episode!!! The secret values of the world, unless you don’t want to gibe the secret away.

Strike that, the first two are sold out already, looks like free shipping wouldn’t have helped me out anyway.

Gary. Fantastic episode. Hadn’t gotten a chance to see WLTV in a while but what an episode to get back in the swing of things.
QOTD: 1. No 2. Hard to find a good selection of wine around where I live (Chinle, AZ).

And here I thought they would all be sold out, but not quite.

Yes, the last WOTM on the forum was a Barbera. Nice enough stuff. And I have this bottle of California barbera that I am not quite sure what to make of, but it’s 8 bucks at the grocery down the street, so it’s got that going for it.

  • ABSOLUTELY I’ve had Barbera, love the stuff, in fact last year I got really high on some 1996 vintage Barbera from the Oltrepo Pavese region in Lombardia. And to those who say Barbera can’t age well, I say HUMBUG! (Check Winespectator, every Barbera review has a “drink now” recommendation for even the highly scored ones – PHOOEY!) I like it old-school, w/little or no oak aging, and real tobacco and earth coming through, and it WILL go 10+ years!
