QOTD just keep the enthusiastic intro. Who cares what someone else thinks.

Must say Gary that I just started watching the show about 2 months ago, and I am hooked. The thing that got me hooked was the unique way you do it. You can see your typical wine show just about anywhere on the web, and yet you bring a new and exciting way to view. You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can’t please them all. Trust me, as a business man mayself you cannot please everyone….it is the 80/20 rule. You spend 80% of your time heloing 20% of the people.

GV – your enthusiasm is all a part of the whole package… Go back and look at the early shows.. your nose was actually turned up a little yourself, BUT NOW, REMEMBER…You’re “CHANGING” the Wine World, not Conforming to it… Keep the Opening!! If Thurston Howell III wants to turn his nose up to the opening he can watch someone else!!

  • Don’t listen to the people that say “don’t ever change.” You should do what ever you feel like doing, your off the cuff, wild personality is what draws us into the show. Plus your personality mirrors your mission, that is to change the wine world. And to change the wine world we need to make it fun, period.

please no stupid openings! your doing fine; no potty mouth descriptors; remember to mention the alcohol; we’re here to learn.
I’v been tasting and drinking wine since the early 70’s and still willing to learn.

Hey Gary. Thanks for doing a show on half bottles. I recall you answering a question in previous episode about the quality of half bottles versus full-sized bottles.

QOTD: Regarding the opening, I like it. I think it speaks to your anti-snob thing. I could do without the pseudo WLTV gang finger signs, though. I think I understand the why (you’re a funny dude), but it’s not really necessary.

Hey GV, hope you had a great holiday weekend. Love the halfers on WLTV!
Liked the Sena a lot, going to grab a 750ml of the 2003 while it’s available!!!
Way to show the love for D HESTER! 😉 He’s amazing!

QOTD: My input is that it is ultimately up to you…listen to your gut man.

I recently watched a wine program hosted by Jancis Robinson – wow, her and Sir Gary would be a great match. I had to watch an episode of WLTV just to set me straight.
That being said, if YOU want to change the intro, then change it. You have made it this far doing your own thing – keep it up.
Maybe do an intro video just once every week or two for laughs.

When I first tuned in, I was excited by the host (GV), even though I didn’t know anything about the show. The wine world needs some energy and enthusiasm, so keep it up. If people want low-key, placid, wine discussion they can probably find it somewhere else. You’ve got lots of supporters out here!
Not so sure about Tina Turner’s “Private Dancer” though… but I have to admit, since you mentioned it it’s stuck in my head now…. which I’m not too happy about… hmmmmmph
BTW, you have to wear that hooded sweatshirt when you do an Oak Monster show.

  • I like the half bottle theme. But even though the subject matter is half of the usual, we still get 100% of Gary’s effort. Way to to, Gary!

QOTD: A sort intro of you saying the “Welcome everyone, this is the THUNDER SHOW!!!” would be cool if it were animated or CGI created. For example, a bum could be seated in an ally. He lifts a bottle of Ripple to his mouth, throws back his head and takes a big swig. Instantly he spits the wine out and gimaces. The camera would pan to the top of the bottle like you were going to be shown inside. Instead of the opening of the bottle, you’d see your face superimposed and you’d say “Welcom to Wine Library TV!!!” Scenes like these would be fun!

  • Hmm I would say that you can have a slick, friendly intro with text and music. Have so shot montages of you doing “serious” stuff: family, work, wine tasting, speaking to folks, tasting wine, visits to vineyards etc, last shots can be of you having some fun as a subtle lead-in that the same guy knows how to have fun. This could go a long way toward establishing a small transition and letting people know you are a knowledgeable guy who is serious about wine. 15-30 sec spot should do. Think Conan: crazy intro – for content thats more calm, yet dynamic, and structured. WLTV: calm, yet dynamic, and structured intro – for content thats crazy. That intro will give you room to do whatever you want in the show and you can keep the old “WELCOME TO WINELIB…”
Those are my 2 cents, love the show.

Gary – do not change the intro!!!! Also glad you did a few half bottles. Results show how hard it is even if you find them. Keep up the great presentations. I do wine notes for a couple of stores and like to hear your comments – especially if we happen to carry the wine.

You (or at least a little bit of you)are supposed to be changing the wine world, not the other way around.

QOTD: I don’t know what you should do (not helpful, I realize, but at least I’m commenting).
The first time I watched your show (after my mom sent me a link), the intro nearly blew out my eardrums (since I was wearing my headphones at work) and in that regard gave me a jolt, however, it didn’t turn me off from seeing what you were all about. It’s hard to balance ‘being true to yourself’ and attracting new viewers (since they don’t know who you are) but I have faith in the Vayniacs and you that you’ll make it work (just like you have been).
If I have any strokes of genius, I’ll let you know! 🙂

  • please don’t change the intro.
if people are turned off by it, they just won’t get the show.
the intro is “you.” To change it is analogous to letting wine snobs tell you what wines taste delicious.
You have to be you and trust your palate with wine. And you have to be you and trust in the way you naturally do the show, as well.
Especially, if we are going to change the wine world.

    Gary,

If people are offended by the intro they shouldn’t watch. I personally love it. The show is great! I am from New York and have lived in Seattle for the past ten years. Some people don’t get me and I couldn’t care less.

I love the old intro’s with that Vikings Fan screwball. Absolutely hilarious! I wish you had more of those. I think intro’s with a comedic feel are very attractive and appealing. There’s my two cents, thanks!
