Great episode Gary. The Castano just went onto my cellartracker wishlist.
QOTD: Great meal I ever had was in a tiny town in Chianti called Lamole. Rented a moped and rode up the mountain side in the cool evening to be served a 5 course stellar meal while overlooking the vineyards in Chianti. Just a total post card scene with food and wine to match. The drive down the dark, freezing night was not as fun but added to the memoery.

    QOTD:
Since my father’s heritage is English we have plum pudding every Christmas. 2005 was our 30 wedding anniversary we ate the pudding with a 1975 Rieussec…fat and sweet, good as it gets.

QOTD: I think it may have been on Valentine’s Day during my fourth year of college. I went with two friends to a tapas place we’d all been wanting to try. For one night we pretended we weren’t broke students and splurged on (probably too much) delicious food and sangria. It was probably the best meal as much for the company as the quality of food.

As usual, great show. Keep it up!

QOTD: that’s tough, but I would probably say that it was a dinner at a little place in Covina, CA called Citrus Grill. It was clam chowder, one of the best steaks I’ve ever had, and creme brule for dessert. I wasn’t old enough to have wine yet, but that meal was pretty much amazing.

  • orion

QoTD: My greatest meal was last v-day. I took the fiancé to the best restaurant in town and had some steak tartare, a rare prime cut and a lavish dark chocolate mousse with cherry syrup. Might have to go back again this year.

QOTD: The best meal I’ve had was at Daniel in the city on my 27th birthday. An eight course tasting menu with wine pairings. IT ROCKED!

  • Nancy A

    QOTD:

You might wonder whether a meal that costs over $200 could possibly be worth it and I would have to answer, yes, if it is a meal at The French Laundry in Napa.

  • On St. Maarten, my favorite place to vacation, I had the most amazing Lobster dinner, prepared fresh from a restaurant in Grand Case called L’Hibiscus. The restaurant seats all of 10 people and is hidden by a trellis of ivy and other vines. The dessert was a Chocolate Experience, which had to be ordered 45 minutes before serving. The best meal of my life……

  • JoeD.

QOTD: Best Meal I ever had would probably have to be at NOBU. The Chilean Sea Bass is a must have!

QoTD: Best meal I’ve ever had was actually at a wedding, it was fillet mignon that was so soft and so delicious they didn’t even give you a knife because you didn’t need one. They didn’t give you any sides because you didn’t need them. I don’t know what was done to this piece of meat but it was amazing.

  • Nathan L

The meal was at AIRES in Houston. They closed down but it was an AMAZING restaurant. It also was the first time I ever tried a Sancerre. It was paired with a mushroom soup and is also the best food wine pairing I’ve ever had.

  • At the Grandhotel Schönegg, Zermatt Switzerland, my wife and I on our honeymoon, had a wonderful 7 course meal. My favorite course, has lasted in my memory 10 years. The Lobster Bisque, was bar none the best soup I have ever tasted.

For those of us who live in wine country (Sonoma county, that is), Cyrus in Healdsburg is the place to go for the best meal ever.

The best meal I remember tonight would be one of 3:

    1. Garlic Shrimp in a restaurant across the lake from Maricabo, Venezuela in the late 70’s
    2. Langostino con la mayonesa in a restaurant in Villahermosa, Mexico in 1976 or so.
    3. Lobster in a restaurant in Nova Scotia around 2003.

QOTD: The best meal of my life was Hannukah (I don’t remember which night) 2000. My mother cooked latkes and homemade applesauce, and I had all my friends over to experience the Jewish holiday….afterwards, we all watched Seinfeld in the livingroom. It was great to have my family there with my friends (all from highschool, though we had long since graduated). It was a reunion of sorts, since my friends and I had all gone our separate ways…The most important people in my life were all under one roof, and the communal feeling of companionship was inescapable. To my memory, wine was not involved.

  • Deb

Best meal ever was at Freddy Girardet in Switzerland, but he’s long retired. Best meal from a working chef was at Landhaus Baur, outside Frankfurt in a small town called Schloss Lichtenstein. The chef is a genius.

  • BobMac

Greatest meal had to be the first night my wife cooked us a meal as husband and wife.

  • The best meal of my life was served in January 1991 in Brooklyn, NY. I sat at the rough-hewn wooden table at Peter Luger Steakhouse with my mother and father and two brothers. We drank dark beers and vodka rocks and ate tomatoes and onions with Luger sauce and an iceberg wedge with blue cheese dressing. The onion rolls went to the fastest grabber while we had two porterhouses and a block of onion rings and creamed spinach. Dessert was, of course, pecan pie with homemade SCHLAG, or whipped cream. My dad was alive still, he had an appetite like a bear and I can remember him and my little brother going after the bone when the tender pieces were eaten. Before wives came along, before children came along….our family had this one memorable dinner together. The best of my life, because it was perfect, and I wish I could have more even just one more just like it.

OK Gary, you win. Ive come out of lurkdom, but not just for the crazy expensive bottle of wine, but for YOU.

Best meal ever: a restaurant called Craft in NYC.

  • GottaGoDrink

Gary- You got me on the Saint Jean. Thanks!

QOTD- The greatest meal I ever had was three years ago when my kids took me out for my birthday in May and I had soft shell crabs sauteed in garlic, steamed broccoli, rice and ice cold beer, sitting by the open window in a storefront joint in Chicago. Magic!

About 5 years ago, after I graduated with a MS in Business, my wife made me a steak, baked potato, roasted corn on the cob, and chocolate cake and a great bottle of red. This was while we were camping at a beautiful national park. The combination of time, place, and food made this the best meal I’ve ever had.
