QOTD : The best meal I have ever had was my graduation dinner from law school at Ken Stewart’s Grill in Akron, OH. Very high class dining, and I got a Rolex Submariner as a graduation gift to boot!

  • careyd

The greatest meal I ever had? Boy, there’ve been some great ones, but it was probably a home-cooked Christmas dinner by my wife and mother-in-law. Wow, oh wow, when they really want to, they can really cook like a dream…and…you can taste the love.

Runner up would be Café Opera in Paris, 3rd would be Le Petite Marmite in Nice (Franco-Egyptian, circa 1999).

QOTD: a tough question… usually I remember the wine and company more than great food. So, a couple memories: Santa Barbara with Caymus S.S., my love, and good food (I felt like I was on psychedelics)… another… Sacramento with Seasmoke Pinot, my chica, lamb and a lobster pasta… oh, damn, too many

QOTD: I’ve traveled, not much in the US, but over much of Europe. My greatest meal has been, believe it or not, on the West Coast US in a small restaurant in a San Francisco suburb called Walnut Creek: Ephesus. They have an assortment of cold appetizers served with pita bread that will blow your mind. For the first 2 or 3 times you will do nothing but order off the cold appetizer menu. Unfortunately I have to recommend you skip the warm appetizers but the meat entrees are equally good. One of the few times I’ve asked for rare tenderloin kebabs and was actually served rare meat. These guys trust and know the quality of their food and it shines in through the taste. In the unlikely event this comment is drawn, please give them a shout out as I love their food and service. They’re half of what makes me want to go home and visit my parents.

Greatest meal hands down was a meal with my family at Frontera Grill in Chicago!! Highlights were the Black Angus Ribeye with spicy red chille, Tacos al Carbon, Blue Agave margaritas, and chocolate pecan pie… makes me hungry just thinking about it.

    Gary,
    Thanks for the great show.
QOTD: Great meals at Gary Danko finished by a
visit from the (stinky) cheese cart.

  • SS Chris

At the last Vayniac offline, we went back to ANTHONY & DAVIDS in Hoboken (for Vayniac historians, A&D was the location of the first Vayniac offline). Had the Truffle Risotto entree made into an appetizer…..UNBELIEVABLE…especially w/ the wines. Then, per grape_ape’s recommendation, had the Veal Tenderloin for the entree…..OH MY GOD…so good!!!!

  • Robert Howells

My favorite meal was in Florida at Downtown Disney. Wolfgang Pucks thin crust pizza.

  • mattlock

QOTD: It would have to be this grilled tilapia with butter cream sauce and capers. It also came with fresh homemade mashed potatoes and giant grilled asparagus basted in butter.

  • DannInNH

The best meal I have ever had was a Duck salad with walnuts and pear paired with a Cantillion Fou Fou, an apricot lambic from the best and most Authentic brewery in the world located in Belgium. I had it at Monks Cafe in Philadelphia.

1984 Thanksgiving meal – starts with potato salad w beets, hard boiled eggs, corn, a hint of mayo. Brown rice and beans, corn on the cob (love corn), roasted turkey, steamed cabbage & carrots, stuffing, jam, yams, plantains, got so full I forget the rest 😉

  • John Farrin

You’re killing me with these 95 pointers for $24. I’m well aware I have a collecting problem and you’re not helping 🙂

QOTD: A 3-course pre-fixe meal at Hunters Hotel in County Wicklow, Ireland in 1985. Everything fresh from the ocean and garden and simply prepared so as to not get in the way of the ingredients. Superb!

  • Bill H

QOTD: home-cooked filet mignon and shrimp on the grill with roasted potatoes

    pepperoncinis?

QOTD: I have had some great great Peking Duck in Beijing. The duck melts in your mouth and is well complemented with a number of different dishes. Too bad they didn’t carry great wines – you have to drink the local stuff like Mao-tai or some Tsingtao beer! I had the beer.

QOTD: Hard to narrow it down, but I’d say one of many I had at the Hussar Grill in Rondebosch, South Africa. A great local place with excellent steaks as well as more exotic meats like zebra, kudu, and warthog.

    Best meal ever:

On father’s day, I braised some GIGANTIC short ribs for 4.5 hours, mashed up some garlic+blue cheese potatoes with a miniscule amount of shaved white truffle (it was all I could afford), and served it a half ear of corn with chive butter, and a kendall-jackson cabernet (I didn’t know any better.) My dad was mildly impressed.

Hey Gary, great meeting you on Saturday, I’m gonna buy some of that Saint Jean Du Barroux L’oligocene 2003 next, QOTD Tiritas on the beach at Zihuatanejo…….for me, it was Life changing. You rock!

  • Tom T.

I’ve had so many good meals that it’s hard to recall which is the “best”. What sticks out in my mind right now is a dish called Italian Pork served at Harry Caray’s in Chicago back in 1991. Outrageous.
If I ever get to Chi-town again you bet I will be there again to order it.

QOTD: The best meals I’ve had are usually a reflection on the people I’m with and not the food, but since it’s a food sponsored QOTD, I guess I’ll go back to the time I was lucky enough to eat at The French Laundry. Good friends, good food, good wine… and amazing pacing… the whole meal took 5 hours and we all had such a blast. That’s what meals should be all about.

GV, best meal was at Le Bec Fin Philadelphia, great company Wife, son and two bottles of very good
    wine…

  • CyberTLH

QOTD: That’s easy!!! La Toque! Last year my wife and I did a 50th Bday tour of Napa/Sonoma. Ken Frank sliced truffles on my raviolis… Wine pairing, cigar in the courtyard with port, awesome!!

QOTD: best seafood dinner ever (this coming from a meat lover), Caruso’s, Sorrento, Italy. Absolutely sublime.

  • Aaron J

Saint Jean Du Barroux brought the thunder! Nice.

AOTD: Great meals have not only great food, but great atmosphere. For my best meal, I’d say the alder grilled Chinook dinner from Ivar’s Salmon House in Seattle. A great experience!
