hmm, I got to Safeway for the convenience and a local grocery store called the Nugget (it’s similiar to Whole Foods) for higher end items.

I don’t mine some O’fers if they are drinkable… I hate it when they are so bad you dump them.

QOTD groceries at trader joes and the local farmers market

As for being 0 for 3, you didn’t think the wines were bad just not amazing, so I can’t see how that is any worse than buying the same over-marketed, over-hyped boring bottle

I shop at Tops on the Waterfront, a great local grocery store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Wegman’s beats the piss out of any other grocery store.

I drive all the way from Chesapeake, VA to shop at Wegman’s in Woodbridge and to get a Ripper at Rutt’s Hutt in Clifton. Sometimes I visit friends while in the neighborhood…

I think that I pissed the wife off today by letting her know that we are going to NJ for our vacation next year…..no questions to be asked. I have to see the WLTV store that place is huge. She asked me first if we were going back to atlantic city and when I told her no she just screamed and walked away.

QOTD: There is no place around here to shop besides the larger chain stores, and they are no fun. On occasion I will slip down to this local market that has great produce and some nice wines. Nothing fancy, but nice for a change of pace. Horrock’s it is.

QOTD: Central Market, Jimmy’s Italian Market, Rudolph’s Market, Kroger. Depending on what I need. All in Dallas.

I shop at two grocery stores in my neighbourhood: Zehrs, and Remarks. The former is for the every day food stuffs, but the latter is for speciality goods, and extremely fresh goods — it’s more expensive, but sometimes it feels nice to splurge.

QOTD Mostly Trader Joe’s for the staples. We also shop at Nijiya Market for our Asian needs (the wife is Japanese). For fruit, when we can’t get to the farmer’s market, we go to Gelsons. We now make our own bread and icecream, which has cut down on our Gelsons runs.

Hey Gary, it is encouraging to see you bomb out shopping [blindly] for wine, since we’ve all done it, but didn’t think such experienced wine drinkers such as yourself had the same problem. And you’re right… if the wine doesn’t totally such it is usually worth the experience, even if you don’t totally like it. Wine can vary in so many ways… it is always a new experience.

Ordered an Albarino (Laxas) at dinner the other night, and really enjoyed it. Learned about the grape from the show, so it was top of mind. Thanks!

QOTD: Central Market. It’s a Whole Food-like retailer in Texas. Great produce, meat, seafood, and hard to find ingredients. A nice wine department, though it seems a bit overpriced.

QOTD – EVERYWHERE. One week it’ll be Tesco’s, then Sainsbury’s, occasionally Asda, Waitrose when I need some really nice wine, back to Tesco’s, then maybe Morrisons, into Newcastle for the Central Market (and maybe Fenwick for more nice wine) then the next week it’ll be Costco, Aldi features regularly, last week I picked up the shopping at Makro (and a wine cooler!) and occasionally even the COOP gets a look in, then Waitrose again, maybe Tescos, blah de blah blah blah……………..

Hi Gary! I’m sure if I went shopping I would somehow have done worse than 0-3. 🙂 Don’t let it get you down, and WAY TO LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING (i.e., wine is all about trying new things, learning your lessons, sometimes twice)! I love that about you.

QOTD: I shop mainly at a Market District Giant Eagle, sometimes at Trader Joes, not enough at ALDI, and very occasionally at Whole Foods (their canned pumpkin puree is so much better than anyone elses!).

Now, if only the damned PA blue laws weren’t so restrictive: I have to make a separate trip for wine/beer/liquor! Very annoying.

I definitely spend my money on groceries at the local Ashland Food Co-op. Gotta give that money back to the peoples!

The sea of wine that is in your library is daunting even to its owner. I now feel much better when I have purchased my three bottles and only one is up to expectation. You stopped and picked up the Sojourn cabernet and then put it back because you tasted it last week. Have you tried one of their Pinot Noirs yet??????

Malbec has found a home in Argentina. In Chile they feel that Carmenere has a life of its own springing from their soils. Carmenere was a lost grape no longer popular in Bordeaux and was previously mistaken for Merlot in Chile. DNA testing revealed that it was indeed a separate varietal and the rest is history. BTW, recently the entire genome of vinifera has been mapped. We will know more about the history of the vines as a result or if they have committed a crime…..

Good to see you struggle at buying wine. We all go through it. You can be very disappointed still buying what you are comfotrable with. I love the Cartlidge and Brown Pinot Noir and bough a bunch of the 2006 to give out for the Holidays and it was horrible. All Rubbing Alcohol and no fruit. Very disappointing.
