I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

Gary interesting show! Although the Tetra Packs and Box-o-wines are marketed to my demographic (the CKC), I definitely avoid it. However, I might try that pinot grigio out even though I’m not the biggest PG fan. That was really fascinating that a French producer used a box of wine to sell in the US! I just did a project that will turn into my master’s thesis on wine in France and how they are loathe to adapt! And the MacGyver wine was great at the end! Thanks for the laugh cause I needed it today!

And I’ll have to get the Secret Xmas Pack! Another tasting along with GV? Sign me up!

QOTD: Best- Filet mignon at Sakonnet Fish House (ironic, isn’t it?) in Portsmouth, RI. Worst- A steak entree at a Thai restaurant in Orleans, France. I like my steak medium-well and up, but this was “a la francaise” and it came out on my plate practically still mooing. I ended up switching with my friend’s duck dish (cause at least that was cooked)!

QOTD: Best – Fresh Filet Mignon full tenderloin from Stew Leonard’s grilled to a perfect medium rare.
Worst – The first time I grilled a skirt steak, I had no idea what I was doing with it, and I treated it like any other steak (not slicing it properly). It was the toughest meat I’ve ever eaten! My jaw was so sore by the time I was done eating it!

    QOTD:
Best – Filet, MR @ Morton’s steakhouse, Great Neck NY
    Worst – Anything from Applebes/Fridays/Tuesdays/Outback/Chillis…

Best steak every: Fresh from the butcher hanger steak (Cooked at home)
Worst steak ever: Every steak I have tried with in Shanghai. (I live there and don’t have many options)

    Great show!

Best steak is the Riverwalk Steak at Shenandoah Restaurant…it’s a Filet with a mustard caper sauce.

Worst steak would probably be one of my mom’s pan fried mystery steaks.

  • HuskerJamie

QOTD: Best ever happened right here in Lincoln, Nebraska, at Misty’s Steakhouse. Worst was in Vegas at a restaurant at Caesars’ in Vegas.

Great episode of the Thundershow. We haven’t got the Bandit in Lincoln yet, but box wine is starting to kill off jug wine here.

Best steak: Actually was tonight. My wife and I are having are having hard wood floors installed on our living room and kitchen floors this week. The only way for us to get out the back door was over freshly floated slab. This wasn’t too much of a problem for us since we were used to camping. We grabbed up all of our veggies, steaks, and a bottle of wine and went around the house to the backyard. This was where the magic happened..see my history of cooking steaks isn’t that great. Typically they are either burnt and overcooked or lightly browned and squirting blood. This time was different… It came off perfect and tender. A wonderful pink medium finish with spicy crust on the outside. We will always remember it.

Worst: Unfortunately this is my own cooking as well. My wife and I lived in an apartment at this time so I had just bought a new Weber grill. We had a small patio out back on the third floor. As this was one of my first attempts at cooking steaks, I always remembered something that my father told me…”always cook your steaks on very high heat.” Ahhh…yes…so I did exactly what he told me, but before I knew it the grill had caught fire and I had fire coming out the top and bottom of the grill. This wasn’t your average white smoke from a grill. This shit was BLACK and it smelled like a house fire. That was because it was…part of the siding of the apartment had caught fire as well. Needless to say, the steaks were totally black on the outside while the inside was red and cool. The flavor was terrible like burnt paper. The funny thing is the whole time I was battling the blaze, there was a pool party going on down below my balcony watching the entire thing…

QOTD: Best steak I’ve ever had would probably be from a local restaurant called El Coyote or one (grilled at home) purchased from a great neighborhood butcher. The worst was from some seriously overpriced steakhouse (can’t even remember the name) that made it about 9 months before going belly up.

    Great show Gary!
I’ve had the Bandit PG and CS boxes at Ravinia Outdoor Music Festival in Chicago many times. They’re great for what they are.
QOTD: Best steak – Montana Legends (That ought to make me a winner), just kidding…
Best steak – A steakhouse in Rolling Meadows, Illinois which is no longer there called Ruperts. It was just charred perfectly on the outside and so juicy inside. Man! it was awesome!
Worst steak – Denny’s steak and eggs.
    Love the show!!!!

OK, Gary, I’m totally hooked on your show! I just discovered you about a month ago and now I can’t wait to get home at night and see what fun things you’re tasting. The bad news is that you’re not shipping to Michigan yet and I’d REALLY love to get that Christmas 4-pack! Bummer…

QOTD: Best steak ever was in Chico, CA when the power went out but we made my friend’s dad’s awesome marinated London broil anyway….it is SO amazing!

Worst steak ever…the time my friends and I were uncorking a Chateau Latour and bought some nice steak to grill. Well, we sort of got distracted by the wine and the steak became jerky! Oh well…the wine was fabulous!

  • Justin E

Best steak I ever had was at Mortons steak house in downtown Chicago. A beutiful filet mignon with bernaise sauce. Unfortunatley Mortons has gone down hill since. They still have a great wine selection though.

  • QOTD: Best steak I ever had is any steak my dad makes on the grill during the summer months. Usually accompanied by family hanging out on the porch, drinking some beers (or wine!) and maybe a cigar or two. I miss summer.
