I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

    QOTD:

Best steak is from a barbecue at my house; Porterhouse that actually came out right.

Worst is any of the various poultry substitutes that my wife tries to fool me with.

  • Senator

Best steak: Without a doubt was a tenderloin my wife made a few years back that was served with a gorgonzola cheese sauce. We’ve had it a few times since then, but as with so many other things, your first is your best, right?

Worst steak: Anytime my father-in-law cooks steaks on the grill. He has a very weird idea as to what constitutes good food. For instance, he sees no reason why you would pick green beans when they are small and tender, instead he waits until they are so large that a single seed would easily feed a family of four. Everytime he cooks steaks he cooks the living daylights out of them. I mean, I am talking “burnt offering” well done. They are extremely tough and dry. The kicker is he gets offended if you try to add BBQ sauce. I’m just trying to add moisture!

Best: Actually last nights was pretty good….about a 2 1/2 inch think ribeye seared well on the outside and med. rare on the inside. Great stuff!
Worst: Any steak that is over cooked!!!

Great job Gary, love the show!

  • Dorothy

QOTD: best steak was at a steak restaurant El Gaucho in Seattle. Some friends of mine just decided to go out to a fancy dinner and picked this upscale place with a cigar bar and mink fur backed seats. I don’t even remember what type of steak I got but the whole experience was amazing and the steak unbelievably tender. It was my first experience at a restaurant with a sommelier which was fun too.

Worst: Probably one I’ve made. I’ve made some really bad ones. I tend to over cook them, and with inexpensive cuts it can make for a rather chewy meal.

Breathed a sigh of relief because I’ve had the Bandit a long time ago and liked it, nice to know I’m not crazy. QOTD Best steak: A few months ago, a USDA Prime Porterhouse I Mesquite grilled myself. Worst steak: Somebody’s house, long time ago, way overcooked ROUND steak…like eating the sole of my shoe, and they were so proud, I just smiled and chewed, and chewed, and chewed…

  • Kev and Ams

Best steak: Cooked by my grandpa.
Worst steak: Cooked by me. =(

    Fun Episode…

QOTD: Best Steak would probably be a steak from lonestar either that or one off my dad’s grill….worst probably from a small in town restaurant we have here that burnt every steak ordered even if it was supposed to be rare.

  • sobojosh

QOTD: Best steak a perfectly cooked prime rib with 3 glasses of ’82 Chateau Margaux (thanks again Hapa! RIP) Worst steak… one time someone feed me rancid meat.

Nice show GV. I’ve seen the bandit a lot, guess I’ll buy it now

Very nice to see something different. I might like to try a boxed white for cooking if it keeps that long after opening.

QOTD: Best steak was in a carne asada burrito at a favorite mexican restaurant. Worst was a hamburger made by our hosts in Saudi Arabia. They tried so hard to give us a taste of home, but had no idea what they were doing!

  • JK from WV

QOTD: Best: A ribeye grilled on back deck with my bistro potatoes that came out just right, roasted garlic with olive olive and grilled homegrown red peppers.
Worst: A $40 peppered strip steak from an uppity steakhouse in my hometown.

QoTD: I decided I was going to start grilling steaks about a year and a half ago. I bought a grill and got all of the accessories. The only meat I was interested in grilling was steaks, burgers, and sausages. The worst steak I have had was one of my experiments with different types of wood and length of time on the grill. It tasted like a brick. The best steak I have had was once I figured out how to grill filet mignon correctly. The trick is high quality meat and keeping it rare. A good bottle of wine doesn’t hurt either. 🙂

  • Boog

    Jeff Faust,
Are you talkin about Schwarz’s supper Club?
    That place is awesome!

QOTD: Best steak was at the Hitching Post in Santa Barbara. Worst steak was ordering a filet from Ruth Chris for delivery through one of those delivery services. Horrible.

Best steak: Half of a grass-fed hanger steak bought from Prather Ranch at the SF Ferry Building, taken home and seared only up to being blue/sub-rare. Port and demi-glace reduction in the pan with shallots, steamed broccoli, mashed potatoes. I guess all the ingredients put together cost no more than $7 for the whole meal.

Worst: An Applebees industrial rib-eye steak somewhere around San Jose cooked well-done (against my instructions) and costing more than twice as much as my homemade hanger!

  • Jenny C

QOTD: Worst – Butterflied well-done filet mignon. I was twelve.
Best – medium rare skirt steak in Napa. I was thirty

OK, so I’m a lurker just now coming clean. Saw your Thanksgiving show…so, I just HAD to have your Christmas pack. But, to my surprise, you can’t ship to Washington State! BUMMER! Guess I won’t answer the QOTD either, since I can’t win that prize either. DOUBLE BUMMER!
