I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

    worst – applebees

Forgot to post my worst steak, definatley from Applebees. Absolutley horrible it was actually green!

  • QOTD: Worst steak I ever had was in Nova Scotia, at the Grand Hotel. Thing was Flat gray in color and utterly tasteless, It looked like it was boiled. I believe it was a sirloin

Best Steak I ever had was a ribeye from Saltgrass in Irving Texas, was just cooked perfectly and not over seasoned.. quite amazing.

  • best: I’m a steak fan, but not overly selective, so primacy takes the rule…just last week I had a nice filet with my girl after a longgggg weekend with family. Just us, perfectly medium steak from a restaurant…delish.

worst: sometimes my dad gets too busy hitting golf balls around the yard and forgets to check the steaks. Charred blocks with crumbly t-bones in them make me cringe, but have happened a couple times in the past few years.

  • Best Steak: The 14oz NY from McLintocks in Shell Beach.
Worst Steak: A broiled slab of London Broil I got on sale…sad

QOTD: Best steak: Peter Luger with Sue and Uncle Sy. Luger is sorta like that joke “How is sex like pizza? When it’s great, it’s amazing, and even when it’s not great it’s still pretty good.” So we had a 3:45 rezzy at the Luger in Williamsburg. That’s right, 3:45. Uncle Sy is in his 80s. Can u say early bird special? Well, anyhow, we had a table right across from the kitchen and ordered the steak for two for the three of us. It was an absolutely religious experience. The char, the tenderness and flavor of the meat — absolutely incredible.

Worst steak: I love my mom, BUT… When I was a kid she made steak “Bronx kosher-style.” That is, burnt to a crisp in a wimpy broiler so the texture was something like shoe leather and then doused with ketchup to hide the lack of flavor. Hmmm, too bad mom wasn’t a wine drinker. It would have been nice to have something to wash away the agony that she called a steak dinner. Sorry mom.

  • QOTD: I’m not a big steak eater in fancy restaurants, and while I’ve had some pretty good steaks when eating out, nothing really rocked my world. So for the best and worst, I’m going to have to with:

The worst: a steak my dad made when I was little. Burnt, tough, dry. I ate it though.
The Best: a steak my dad made a few years ago. He got better.

On a tangent, I recently had a tuna steak that fooled me into thinking I was eating an extremely rare, extremely tender beefsteak. It was one of the most perplexing meals I’ve had in recent times.

Best and worst steaks, eh? Hard to say. I haven’t had a really great steak in a long long time. No, I take that back, last weekend I had a fantastic steak at Grolla in Portland. Worst? The line is so long…it’ll have to be some tough piece of something that we cooked up on the grill on the back porch.

Hey Gary the best steak I have ever had is Kobe, I actually found a place near to my house the sells it, the worst steak I have ever hard was a rib eye steak I had at the Outback, it made me sick :-(. Great episode I thought of doing a costume party and having some really unusual wine like Vampire Pinot and maybe I will get the Bandit and have that there too.

  • Dennis Cox

Best steak, Lomo de Res cooked on my friends family asado in El Pinar, Uruguay.

Worst steak, I have a friend who worked at Frigid Meats on the south side of Chicago (I think they supplied Ponderosa). He got a box of t-bones. Shoe leather.

My mom brought me a box of shiraz from Australia about ten years ago that was the size of a kids juice box. It was nasty but I did think it was an interesting concept.

Best steak was a friends bachelor party. It was just the two of us and we each had a 26oz NY strip nice and rare, then we shared a 30oz kobe ribeye washed down with cheese and a 1985 Lynch Bages. All at home and all great. Worst was at one of the high end chain steakhouses. The meat was ok but it was such a disappointment. I asked for a medium rare strip. One end was almost raw and the other end was beyond well done. I don’t understand how you can screw up a steak like that at such a “nice” place.

QOTD; Best steak at Peter Lugars with my bro when he got back from Iraq.
    Worst: Shop Rite London Broil.

  • Pinuck

    QoTD

Best steak: Half of a grass-fed hanger steak bought from Prather Ranch at the SF Ferry Building, taken home and seared only up to being blue/sub-rare. Port and demi-glace reduction in the pan with shallots, steamed broccoli, mashed potatoes. I guess all the ingredients put together cost no more than $7 for the whole meal.

Worst: An Applebees industrial rib-eye steak somewhere around San Jose cooked well-done (against my instructions) and costing more than twice as much as my homemade hanger!

Well, I am finally de-lurking. The Christmas pack sounds awesome, but alas, I live in Pennsylvania where my local state store has more varieties of vodka than Cabernet. But I’m not bitter .

QOTD: Best steak would probably be one I had recently at the Cock and Bull in Lahaska, PA. Just perfect, melt-in-your-mouth goodness.

Worst steak is tougher (no pun intended) as usually bad steak is still better that no steak!

QOTD: Best steak was a fillet mignon that I had probably about 4 years ago. I know, that’s a pretty generic answer, but it’s true.

Worst? I’m not even sure. Maybe one that my Mom cooked once(no offense to her) because she often cooks steak a little too long and it gets tough.

  • Eric S.

QOTD: Tender juicy filet with crumbled blue cheese and a butter sauce was best. Worst was any number of well done (burnt, charred, etc) chewy steaks on my parent’s grill growing up!

Love the steak at Misty’s, but the wine list left a little to be desired …

QOD: inch thick porterhouse with herbes de Provence on the grill, on the front porch, with an ’85 Krug cabernet that held up just beautifully. Good enough to evoke tears of joy, just about. Ain’t no steak like the one you don’t have to leave home for.

Worst? Who thought you could get a bad steak in IA, but when I was a kid I ordered a T-bone once in Le Mars that looked like it had been in a 350-degree oven for 5 minutes. Grey on the outside, raw on the inside. Feh!

  • Best Steak – Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa. The quality of top-tier steakhouses can be argued, but there is no place like Bern’s for the overall experience.

Worst Steak – A friend cooked steaks over charcoal, but the lighter fluid had not burned off when he put them on, and the top was on the grill the whole time. Also, they were well-done. It was like eating gritty gasoline drenched crap.
