Can box wine be good? That is a question that maybe taking a very interesting spin in a new direction, as more and more under 25 year old wine drinkers enter the wine market wineries are thinking of new ways to brand to that demo and today Gary Vaynerchuk tastes some of the newer efforts in the market.

I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

QOTD: Best was a Ribeye at Ringside in Portland. Worst was a piece of shoe leather and gristle at Sizzler when I was young.

Love the vidcasts. Kudos for keeping it up!

Best & Worst steaks: Both cooked on my own BBQ, the worst was because it really embarrassed me – I accidentally cooked it to “medium” (heresy)… and I was cooking for friends, woops. The best was because the meal was the best: Great friends, great wine, great accompaniments, great mood, everything just worked. (juicy, cooked to perfection… mmmmm…) Steak, like wine, is about the experience, otherwise it’s just a chunk of meat!

  • Boxed wine: I was scarred in college by a box of wine. Can’t remember which brand, but I do remember it as one of the worst white wines I’ve ever tried. I haven’t tried another box of wine since. I’ve been too afraid of bringing home a box of—well, something similar to that Bota Box you tried.

I’m not big on pinot grigio but I know someone who is. If I see a Bandit box, I’ll pick it up and sneak her a glass to get her reaction.

QOTD – Best steak: Does it have to be a red meat steak? I mean, I’ve had some great medium-rare beef steaks, but the BEST steak I’ve ever had was made of swordfish and prepared by the host of a dinner party. He marinated it in a homemade sauce of soy, oranges, honey, cloves, blackberries, ginger, and other things I don’t recall right now. It was perfectly grilled. It rocked.

QOTD – Worst steak: That’d be either (1) the chewy overly-well-done “beef” shoe I had at a catered social event last year, or (2) every overcooked tuna steak I’ve ever been served. I like my tuna steaks seared on the outside and raw on the inside, not cooked through & through til they’re dry, thank you very much.

A Menu For Hope: Great cause! I’m already an annual United Way and Toys for Tots donator, but I might have to enter that raffle. I’ll definitely spread the word about it.

    MacGyver wine label: Awesome.

And now I’m off to watch all the older episodes I’ve missed lately.

QOTD: Best steak I ever had is a tie between a restaurant in Chicago called the Char House (don’t think it is there anymore, but Fillet Minion was outstanding), and my best friend cooks a ridiculous steak on the grill, not sure what he does but it is tremendous.

Gary, I think you should start drawing prizes from comments left the episode before a drawing announcement. This will ensure a lot more comments, and that way the lurkers will be forced out of hiding. It seems unfair to the dedicated comment posters.

  • QOTD: Best steak ever. Wow, tough one. In recent memory I’m going to have to go with the bbq I hosted this summer. We butchered a whole beef tenderloin, and grilled the filets out on the deck. Nothing beats good medium rare filet with rum sauce, wine, and friends.

Worst steak. I saw Applebees in the comments, and that brought back some bad memories. I’m going to have to jump on the Applebees bandwagon.

QOTD:Both pretty recent…Worst, last weekend i ordered some carne asada from this “authentic” mexican place called El Vaquero in Columbus. Toughest, stringiest piece of grey flank steak ever. Jaw hurt for a few days afterward.

Best: Got a petite filet trio at Wildfire in Chicago, and you could pick the 3 different crusts you wanted on them. I think i got gorganzola, mushroom, and horseradish. Horseradish was king.

Best steak – ribeye on the backyard grill, of course with a couple botles of nice red wine (say a zin and a rhone blend) and a few friends to share stories and laughs.

  • My friend swears by boxed Sangria…she always brings it to parties with a can of fruit cocktail. Very tasty 😉 Thanks for an “outside-the-box” episode…(sorry, couldn’t help it)!!

QOTD: Best steak: my first Filet Mignon, age 18, Valentine’s Day at Atria’s restaurant in Pittsburgh, PA. Accompanied by stuffed prawns and a gorgonzola-stuffed roasted tomato. if only t-bones could taste that good.
Worst steak: (Sorry, Mom!) Until she discovered marinade, every steak my mom made was the worst steak I ever had: dried out and full of gristle. Could you blame me for looking forward to chicken, pasta, and potatoes?

    Cheer,
    Carly

OOPS, don’t count me twice for the drawing, but QOTD Worst steak: was at a VERY nice seafood restaurants in Chicago, I don’t want to mention the name because I love their seafood, and the staff is extremely nice and friendly. However the steak was very bad; huge disappointment.

  • Finally, the box show! – too bad things didn’t work out better…

QOTD: Best: Peter Luger’s Porterhouse, no question.
    Worst: Longhorn. nasty.

I agree with you, the bandit wine is a very good PG for the price.

    QoTD:
Best steak: The best steak I’ve ever had was an dry-aged sirloin at Renee’s restaurant in Greenville, SC.

Worst steak: The worst steak I’ve ever had was when my college decided to be “fancy” and have a steak dinner night, more like grilled rubber night! Terrible, absolutely terrible.

QOTD: Best steak: at this French restaurant near our place, very nice, simple, but delicious. Worse one was the first time I tried to cook a steak on my own. Burnt and chewy. Not good.

  • Grapedigger

I’ve never been interested in box wines but recently my wife bought a 4 x 187.5ml pack of “Bistro Mundo” red wine from Spain (8$) for the purpose of using it for cooking. I was curious to taste this wine and to tell you the truth it was good!! tasted better than many 10- 15$!! An 86 pointer in my opinion. I think the 187.5ml format is great as it could pour 2 glasses and could come handy for casual weekday drinking.
For the QOTD, best steak that I had was a filet mignon at the 401 WEST restaurant in the West island of Montreal. Worst steak, was a bloody NY sirilion, which I ordered medium well, in some chain restaurant.
    Cheers

Great Show. I have finally caught up through the old episodes to watching them as they come out. It’s kind of like I have been time warped up to the present day after more than a years worth of episodes.

This is my first chance at a contest, so my answer to the QOD.

Best steak: As noted above in other quotes, I have to say my best steak is Kobe beef. In particular I had filet mignon at Chamberlain’s in Dallas with my beatuiful wife on our aniversary. May have been the occasion as much as the beef.

Worst: My beautiful wife tried grilling an old freezer burned venison steak on the Foreman grill and served it to me. The thing should have been thrown away and cooking it was just cruel and unusual punnishment.

  • tom dimelow

I like my meat on the rare side, so the worst beef steaks are those that have been essentially well done to burnt with no beef flavor at all, these are at cookouts. I’ve had some extremely good steaks, generally from high-end restaurants, to actually say which one was the best is difficult to ascertain but a top flight wine certainly capped the meals.

  • Best – Nick and Sam’s (Dallas) Longbone Dry Aged Ribeye
    Worst – Anything from Sizzler…

  • James P

The best steak I ever ate was in Kuwait waiting for Operation Iraqi Freedom. We’d been sitting in the desert for a couple months already when my civilian contractor/counterpart and I finagled a trip off base and into town to this really surprisingly new age mall. We scored some steaks, hamburgers and hotdogs from a grocery store. Back on base we improvised a grill, stole some salt and pepper from the mess hall and had a great bar-b-que. Nothing like fresh red meat after months of crap.

Soooo disappointed in the boxed wines! I was hoping for some good ones to bring to workplace holiday parties. :*(

qotd: My dad’s filet mignon made with soy sauce and lots of garlic! Beats any steak I’ve ever had at restaurants.

QOTD: The best steak I’ve ever had was a hanger steak with pomme frites in a little bistro in Paris — simple, elegant, a good provincial wine –> Heaven. the worst, was also in France — stringy, barely chewable, supposedly topped with “truffles” (aka rubber bits) in a restaurant open for tourists on a National Holiday. If you are in France during a holiday, find a good cheese shop, get a baguette and a bottle of wine and have a picnic.
