I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

QOTD: Best was Stripsteak at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. I ordered their standard Angus filet mignon and it was amazing. I now wonder what their Kobe filet would have been like…

Worst was my mom’s. Thankfully my wife knows how to cook.

  • Best steak….As an non-steak eater it would be Tuna steak at an upscale resto in the Balt/Wash area.

QOTD: The best steak is at a little shop off the main strip in Kyoto. Kobe beef steak medalions. Rediculous.
The worst steak is any piece of cow my uncle gets his hands on. Chars it to a crisp and then doesn’t even have the decency to offer a sauce so I’m left there to gnaw on the dried up p.o.s.

  • Best Steak: The first time I had dinner at my significant other’s house. Her dad was quite skilled with the grill, and I was completely stuffed at the end of that dinner. Of course, then came “The Talk,” as I sat unable to move…

Worst Steak: From Dining hall of my dorm in college. The kitchen was having a seriously off night, and they produced the driest, toughest, most overcooked, least seasoned, and blandest steak I’d ever encountered. I swear my fork and knife went dull cutting it. In no way did any amount of salt, pepper, gravy, or steak sauce make even the tiniest piece of it the slightest bit edible.

  • QOTD: The best has to be a fillet mignon I had at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Toronto on my birthday this year. It was AWESOME! The worst… if you can even call it steak… was from a Taiwanese “steakhouse” (and I use the term loosely) that was way overcooked.

  • QOTD: The best steak I ever had was at Joe DiMaggio’s of North Beach in San Francisco. The worst, was a steak that my former stepmother made while she was drunk. It was charred to a crisp.

  • Mike Cima

The best steak I ever had was a ribeye I prepared at home with a rub I had made and the worst was a NY Steak on a steak sandwich…just tough and chewy! I love watching the show and love turning new people onto it. Thanks for everything!! -Mike

Best – Some steakhouse in NYC, too long ago to remember the name.
    Worst – Hawaiian BBQ.

  • QOTD: Worst was at L’entrcote in Lyon France. Not a typical steak, and is served with more french fries then what is humanly possible to eat.

Best of all time is the filet from Gene & Georgetti Italian Steak House in Chicago IL, USA! I swear it was perfectly cooked, the size of a 16in softball and by far the most tender juicy steak ever consumed by man.

  • QOTD: I haven’t eaten steak in twenty years. so I guess the best/worst steak would be the next one I had.
BTW It would take a wine like that to have me out myself as a vegetarian wine lover from Kansas City of all places.

  • Thanks for doing this show. I’ve been wondering about boxed wines for a while now.

Because of finals, I completely missed the opportunity to leave a comment for the wine that Dave won, so I’m glad I decided to watch this episode of WL before getting back to my studying. (By the way, CONGRATS DAVE!!! I was totally stoked when Gary pulled your name out of the bucket. Maybe I’ll see you again at another CA meet-up.)

QOTD: Best steak ever was a filet-mignon w/ garlic at a local Basque restaurant called The Star. Because I’m in the middle of ranch country, I can get a steak at a place like The Star that would cost a fortune in New York. It’s truly unbelievable. And for less than $30 for the entire gigantic meal, it’s an absolute steal! The worst steak I’ve ever had was one I tried to make for myself. Oh man, that was awful! If that doesn’t count, then the worst steak I’ve ever had was at a local casino in the middle of the graveyard shift. Drunk as I was, that food was hardly edible. Good thing I had some cheap wine to wash it down with. Bad as that steak was, it was still better than the one I tried to make for myself!

Best steak was in Tokyo with my brother’s soon-to-be inlaws. It was the most beautiful Italian restaurant I’ve ever seen. We had seven courses and a new bottle of wine with each one . . . decadent 🙂 Worst steak? Steak-O-Rama in Long Beach, California– tons of gristle and fat. Yuk!

    QOTD:

Best – Metropolitan Grill in Seattle, about 7 years ago. Steak was a double-thick filet, about 4.5 inches around and 3 inches tall. Don’t know how they cooked a slab of beef that size so perfectly, but it was perfect pink medium through and through. Simple salt and pepper seasoning with a splash of au poivre sauce that had a hint of cognac. Unreal.

Worst – Gaucho in Soho, London UK, 2 years ago – went there twice in 2 months to be sure. Sorry guys, but I’ll eat the marbled, sinewy crap from Outback or Ponderosa before I eat the grey shoe leather you guys were serving at that time. Twice. I had a hard time even cutting it with a sharp knife.

    Peace.

QOTD: Best has to be a multi-way tie of 3 out of 4 steaks I had while in Uruguay over Thanksgiving. They know beef.

Worst is my dad’s attempt to cook a 12 lb grocery store tenderloin on the grill. He can do 3-4 lb cuts, but don’t let him get his hands on something bigger…

Thanks for the box wine show, I’ve always wondered.

  • nougat

QOTD – I’ve had Lugers, Palm, Sparks, Keens…you name it, and I love the dry aged slabs they serve up, but the most memorable steak for me was a rib eye at the Atrio Cafe in Stockton NJ that was lightly marinated in Brazilian spices. The worst was probably a thin, gray and chewy little number at a Ponderosa in Lake Charles, LA circa 1981.

QOTD: BEST–I can’t remember the name of the place. It’s in Palm Springs and very much like your local high end steakhouse. Worst–sizzler and Bob Evan’s tie it up.
