Can box wine be good? That is a question that maybe taking a very interesting spin in a new direction, as more and more under 25 year old wine drinkers enter the wine market wineries are thinking of new ways to brand to that demo and today Gary Vaynerchuk tastes some of the newer efforts in the market.

Wines tasted in this episode:

I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

    QOTD:
Best… Hmmm… I’d have to say in Autumn of 1995 in a little workman’s restaurant behind the Duomo in Florence. We sat down, didn’t know enough Italian to order lunch and they didn’t know any English. Luckily, they were only serving one thing… bistecca (with salad and mushrooms).

Worst… last weekend I thought I’d save some $$ by buying a steak from Ralph’s instead of Whole [paycheck] Foods. After wrestling with the gristle for half and hour and finally giving up, I re-assembled the inedible bits only to discover that over half of what I bought couldn’t be eaten by a homo sapien. That translated into $10 for 4oz. of steak, or $40/lb. Never again.

Interesting take on boxed wine, though I’m still not convinced. I do like the stelvin (screw-cap) closures and perhaps, with time, the boxed wines will get better…

QOTD – Best steak was at Phillipe’s where a triple preparation of beef tenderloin was presented (each with it’s own sauce); fantastic flavors and sauces. Worst steak was the one I found frozen from two-years ago in the garage freezer and still decided to make (ACK!).

    Worst:
Served at the oldest Inn in Americam, “The Rhinebeck Beckman Arms”
The steak was served rare after (3) tries… I guess the grill was off duty.
No wines and lots of martinis

    Best:
A home barbed NY Strip steak seved with a 2002 St Supery Dollarhide Ranch Ranch last summer enjoyed with my eldest son.

The best steak ever was the seared prime rib at the Candlelight Lounge in DeWitt, Iowa. The restaurant is no longer with us as the children were not able to carry on the tradition. You could cut it with your fork and it just melted in your mouth when you chewed it, yet it was full of flavor. The worst, my grandmother, she would cook beef until it was dry and tough, you could not go out and play until you ate your dinner. I would sneak pieces to the dog so I would not have to eat as much.

Nice show, I might have to try the Bandit PG.

The Best steak I’ve ever had was likely a bone-in Rib Eye (my favorite) at Angelo & Maxies in NYC. Perfectly seared outside and med. rare inside with a side of garlic mashed potatoes, sauteed mushrooms and onions. I recall having a few pints of Guinness along with that meal. I’m sure the meal was top notch, but the fact that I was eating it with some of my buddies made it even better.

The worst steak? I’m sure there were worse steaks that were forgettable, but I had a rib eye at Sawgrass in Texas that was abominable. My expectations probably made it worse than it was, but I had high hopes being in a steakhouse in Texas.

  • hhmm, The worst was an undercooked rib eye at a place we went to on Valentine’s. The owner insisted that regardless of what the customer wanted he thought all steaks should be rare.

The best was a New York Steak marinated and cooked to perfection on the grill by my boyfriend.

  • QOTD – Best Steak: Craftsteak at the the MGM in Vegas, it was a Wagyu filet mignon, wow.
    Worst Steak: Denny’s, enough said.

Does anyone else worry about plastics leaching into these fine boxed wines? I like the environmentally friendly shipping aspect, but worry about toxicity (and crappy taste).

Speaking of crappy taste, the worst steak I ever had was at Ponderosa in 1983. At least they said it was steak…

The best was on Vancouver Island at Mole – organic, cooked with love. I wonder if they’ll let me byob if I win….

  • Worst steak: hard to say. I do remember having a steak and frites in Paris at a sidewalk cafe, and I couldn’t even cut the steak. It was some horrible overcooked piece of french rubber. Back then I was too passive to complain. Now I would curse them out en francais.

Best steak: Has so many good ones it is hard to count. Steak au poivre a la Alton Brown with a good bottle of wine shared with my wife is hard to beat. NY strip is my favourite cut though, with a simple rub of herbs from the garden and a herbaceous red wine. One meal that comes to mind is a steak tournedos at L’Oree du Bois in Chelsea, Quebec with a Gaja Barolo on a special occasion with my wife.

    Dave.

QOTD:The best steak I have ever eaten was at home, a Hertiage Foods “Hearst Ranch”-14oz. Grass-Fed Ribeye. The worst was a supposed porterhouse cut at Ponderosa.

QOTD: Worst steak ever has been washed away from my brain cells, thank my lucky stars!

Best steak ever: so far has been the grain-fed NY strip over hot coals in my back yard. Or maybe the Angus filet mignon at “900 East” (cooked precisely as ordered).

  • Chris Ridout

My best steak would be from Ruth’s Chris steakhouse in Toronto – New York Stiploin.
My worst steak would be from Morton’s Steakhouse in Toronto – Cajun style new york striploin. Amazing how service changes the taste of food, eh Gary?

The best steak I’ve had was a filet at Ken Stewart’s Grille. The worst, I must admit, probably came from my own grill at some point in time. I’ve gone far into the grey, well-done state a few times, especially shivering by the grill on wet dark early winter nights.

Gary, thanks for adding a time delay to your latest giveaway. I rarely get to watch episodes the day they come out. Sometimes I’m 3-4 episodes behind. Thanks!

The best steak I ever had was a luscious 2″ thick ribeye medium rare, from my bar-b-que, which I shared with my son and a bottle of Don Melchor 1995 Cab, i can still taste it. MMMMMMM
The worst steak was a tasteless over priced porterhouse for two at B & C steak house, but the wine was great.

QOTD: My husband’s filet mignon on the BBQ. Worst: too many to choose just one…

Best stake: My Porterhouse! Just being honest, I know how like it cooked and what I want on it. 1 1/2 lb porter with Salt, pepper, splash of tobasco and Worcestershire, 8 minutes each side under my broiler. Perfect med rare! YUMMMM!

Worst: Tayors Steakhouse in La Canada, CA. I go here several times a new with my parents and up until my last time it has always been good. With that said, last time I ordered a New York, which was cook right (med. rare) but had zero flavor, so much so I thought something was wrong with my taste buds. It didn’t taste like beef or even taste bad, just felt like I was chowing nothing.

  • I am so happy you did the box wines, but please don’t stop there … please do more as they become available. We haven’t liked any we have had yet but hear that more and better wines are becoming available in a box, and of course the 3-liter boxes are usually a great deal, but only if you can actually drink the wine!

QOTD: Best steak … a handsome slab one evening that came from an organically-raised free-roaming cow, cooked in our kitchen with just salt and a little garlic. Let the meat speak for itself, if it has a voice. If it doesn’t, then I guess you have to smother it with stuff, but I do prefer the actual taste of the meat to anything else added.

Thanks again Gary V-N-Ch for all you do. We’re loving it all.

  • Gary:
Do you think the order in which you taste the wines affects the outcome of your tasting experience?

  • Robert Fitzgerald

Box wine – I would love to see a “higher-end” winery try this and see what happens. Hopefully someone does it, just like you said – markets change. Kind of like DRM free music!

Great to see you do the boxed wines. I am interested in box wines is easy to carry and very nice to carry where glass is not allow but you are allow to bring your on food and drink. Having good alternatives in wine is a real plus.

QOTD: Two places tie for the best and both cuts were Filet Mignon the first was Boccon Di Vino, Montalcino Italy (had a good bottle of wine there too) the other was Great American Land and Cattle Co., El Paso Texas. These were extremely high quality cuts of meat that was cooked to perfection. Nothing but excellent memories of the dining experience.

The worse … Orlando Fl. place is now out of business and I know why. It was on International Drive real tourist trap area but I was there on business late it was next to the hotel. Meat was just poor quality all the way around.

    Gary;

When you felt relieved upon filling your glass, I already was expecting the worst. I can’t say that I’m a convert towards boxed wines. I’ve always believed that after a while, the packaging taints the flavors of the wine. I’ll give the Bandit a whirl with the BBQ crowd this summer.
QOTD: Best steak: Smith & Wollensky Worst: Sizzler steak house while chaperoning on my child’s field trip. I honestly don’t think it was made from bovine beef. Anyway, go Dolphins! Can you say record breaking season? Happy Holidays!!
