I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

Gary- I’d like to get into box wine but todays show wasnt too reassuring. QOTD: Best steak: at Oakmont CC, Oakmont, pa, rare ny strip. I still can remember exactly how it tasted. Worst: this steak house in Monteal, good steak with all this crap on it, that ruined it. greg

Best=Delmonico’s in Mexico City; worst=Tad’s ($2.99 or so, back in the CKC days) in Times Square–both, many, many years ago! Dietary restrictions now–not much steak allowed!

  • Erica37

Best steak of all time: My boyfriend cooked me my first steak ever on our bbq this summer. It was the first time he’d ever cooked for me, so it was really sweet and a cherished memory.
Worst steak of all time: Same steak! It was wildly overdone.

QOTD: Best steak I have ever had is a tough call, but I would have to say it’s a tie between any T-Bone steak my Dad has ever cooked me. Wine and steak with my family – there’s nothing better!

Thanks for saying the new wristbands was a good idea – but I’m glad to at least have an original from the Thanksgiving pack – will there be one in the Christmas pack?

Best Steak — The 20 oz Strip Steak at Ray’s The Steaks in Arlington VA, cowboy style (chipotle peppers, sauteed garlic, fried onions).

Worst — I think my elementary school once tried to serve the steak from Steak-Ummms as a standalone meal. Appalling.

  • QOTD: best steak was at Ruth’s Chris’ on my 18th birthday… i’ve probably had better steaks since then, but it was my first good steak, and the first is always the best. worst steak was when i was stupid enough to order steak at Denny’s…

Best steak – collaboration between wife and me, flank steak marinated in ketchup and soy sauce (yep) cooked to perfection on my grill.

Worst steak..made the mistake of ordering beef in Basel, Switzerland. Overcooked, dried out.

  • Brooklyn Paul

    QOTD:
Best steak I ever had was a Filet Mignon I had at Wolfgangs in NYC. The worst? Probably when my college dining hall attempted to serve steak for dinner one night.

Thanks for the box ep. Too bad they weren’t better. Like bottle wines, box wines vary. There is a big selection out there and not all are bad. Best feature is that you can drink them over several weeks without deterioration.
Best steak – ribeye off the grill at home.
Worst – No Name Steak anywhere.

QOTD Best: I actually made the best steak I’ve ever had – on a gas grill too.

As far as the episode – I don’t know if anyone else brought this up, but can we assume that Gary didn’t decant and pour back in the box?

QOTD: Ironically, the best steak I’ve ever had was at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse last night. I had a Ribeye and it just melted in my mouth it was so delicious. The worst steak I’ve ever had was at this place in the middle of nowhere (near Huntsville, TX) that boasted that they had a 2 lb. steak for like $15. Let me tell you, that was NOT good quality steak, but it was definately an experience!

Best: Dry aged ribeye from Paulina’s Meat Market here in Chicago. Grilled to fatty perfection and served with a light slathering of Roquefort. Side of baked potato w/sauted garlic and butter. Asparagus w/a balsamic vinegarette. Wine: something zinny.

    Worst: Anything Ponderosa.

  • Bill H

QOTD – best, kona-crusted dry aged sirloin at capital grille in boston. worst, any time my sister doesn’t finish hers because she insists on having filet mignon butterflied and cooked well

excited about the christmas pack. also, gary, I went back and watched episode 18 over the weekend because I had a question about decanting, and couldn’t help but notice a few things. first of all you said it was your favorite episode at the time, you scored a barossa valley shiraz 96-97, and the show was entirely devoid of ‘the thunder show,’ ‘sniffy-sniff’, ‘qotd,’ and ‘changing the wine world’

My mother seems to enjoy cooking with “Black Box” wine. I have not actually tried it, so I can’t really say if its good or not. Her food is damn good though which should say something about it. QOTD- Best: 10oz filet with a mustard/rosemary rub. Worst: Undercooked new york strip that gave me food poisoning. Not fun.

  • QOTD: Best steak? No doubt grilled rib-eye w/ salt and pepper only. Worst steak? Steakum (remember those frozen steaks your parents made you in the 80s???)

God bless the Chateau la Fleur!

    Cheers

  • Dr. Mike

QOTD: Best: Lobel’s Madison ave. boneless strips (14 or 16oz) are always the best aged prime, gently messaged with flaked sea salt, black pepper and tuscan olive oil, 50-60 seconds each side at 600 degrees.

Worst: probably something I’ve been served at a wedding

QOTD: I guess the best steak I’ve had was at Topeka Steakhouse in Richmond, because I never order steak when I go to “fancy” restaurants. The worst was at some place in Traverse City MI, don’t remember the name, it was a local place, they smothered the steak in some kind of cheese topping, and it covered up a “steak” that was almost all fat. Yuck.

The liner of that Cuvee de Pena is probably made from the same materials as most running shoes. Pour some wine into a new pair of shoes and see how it tastes in 2 years. I’ll stick to glass for now. Still, thanks for checking on this.

QOTD: My best steak ever was a fillet mignon (thin-sliced) cooked by my grandmother with great love. I was thinkiing that the worst was dorm food in college, but I believe it was some grizzled hunk of rock that would be more suitable for road resurfacing. I can remember the meat but not when – too unpleasent to recall.

Best Streak: Ozumo’s (Japanese) in San Francisco, CA. I had a wagyu streak with mushrooms and a cabernet sauce…wow
