QOTD: Mirassou Pinot Noir

I noticed Gary stealing Jeffrey Davies’ expression “makeup” and using it to describe the Rex Goliath and Excelsior wines…what a hack 🙂

QOTD: Nope, no every day wine in particular. I am constantly buying new bottles of wine to try. The closest I could say is an every day wine is a wine that cost me $10 or less. And I drink a lot of them, just check my wine blog. I think I average 3-5 bottles a week easily, and each is different. That doesn’t even count “events” like tastings and such. I’m like one of those wheat harvesters, but instead of wheat, its bottles of wine. LOL! I guess that makes me a whine-o! I also keep bottles around 12-20 bucks around for more special nights, like when I get all gourmet in the kitchen and come up with a fabulous culinary experience that needs something special in the glass to match. None of this accounts for the special occasion wines, which are usually between 30-50 bones. And then the ones I am keeping until maturity, which are from $10 – $50. I rarely spend more than that… I think QPR is factored exponentially… to get better than say, the 2003 Felsina “Rancia” Chianti Classico we had the other day ($35) start entering the 50 – 80 dollar market, and to get a little better than that you are in the c bills. But from the yummy “every day” $10 or less wines I’ve had to something a bit better, it might only set you back another $5 – $10. Less than 10 bones can get you a 90 point wine… then 20 bucks can get to you to 94… but to hit 95 points, you’re going to have to up the anti by 20 bucks (the Felsini Chianti being an exception to the rule).

Looking forward to trying some Torrentes as I am in to the Argentinian wine scene.

Gary….I haven’t seen to many shows with 98 to 100 ratings….what about tasting some wines that you remember to be 98+ ratings of different varietals that you have tried and see if they still are….you could call it the classic show….

QOTD: The broadest and most accurate answer is “Red”. To narrow it down, #1 Cabernet, #2 Nebbiolo, #3 Sangiovese, then it tapers of quickly with Pinot Noir, Malbec, Shiraz, Merlot…

As far as an everyday wine the 2004 columbia crest grand estates merlot has been my go to because it’s hella delicious and it’s about the only decent wine you can find outside of a wine shop. Seriously, the had four vintages in a row rate 90 points and I hate the rest of them, this one kills it for the price. If I can make it to a shop then there are quite a few inexpensive options. The borsao tres picos and regular crianza are nice. The artazuri garnacha is great as well. Vega sindoa has a few offerings for under $10 that are respectable. As for white wine I love the kumkani chenin blanc and the marchal vouvray. Thanks for trying to bring the values to us Gary!

QOTD: Four Vines Naked Chard.

No everday wine. I just pull something new from the racks…. Peju Cab, Chalk Hill Chard, V. Sattui Cab and Zin, Ridge Geyserville, just a lot of Cali style.

I also love the Italians, with Chiantis, Brunellos and Super Tuscans all over the house.

Every new bottle is a god memory for the most part, and like you have said before, it’s always a state of mind, so often, good mood with friends and family equals great wine.

My everyday wine was the 2002 columbia crest two vives merlot cab, but that has been gone for about a year, and I am still searching for a great QPR that I can buy a case of.

my wife loves to roll with a $10.00 bottle of Sagelands Cabernet, Columbia Valley. I am a bit more of a snob (that’s your fault Gary), but the wine is not a bad effort for ten bones.

My grocery store standby is 2005 Viña Doña Paula Malbec Los Cardos, I think
they raised the price a couple bucks,because I buy all of it up…

Great episode. Being a CKC, sub-$10 cabs are clutch.

QOTD: For some reason, I seem to be buying CMS by Hedges whenever I see it in the store. You know the classic situation… Sitting around the dinner table, out of wine, and people are still looking like they could take down another…

I live in Israel and drink almost exclusively kosher wines, so for my every day drinking, I stick to the lower-priced ($10-12) Galil Mountain wines. I’m getting into a surprisingly good 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon for my red and the 2006 Viognier for my white.

2006 Carchelo Monestrell (the grape known as mourvedre in France) from Jumilla, Spain. $8.99 retail. Killer.

QOTD – Unfortunately I am running out of my go to wine.

I purchased a case and a half of Robert Karl Claret (Spokane) about 9 months ago for $20 a bottle because it was so good and I wanted to see how it would drink over time. Well, I am down to 8 bottles left and the next vintage doesn’t come out until March. Must stop drinking it…..But darn it’s good!
