Let me guess, the Web 2.0 guests of 2008 will all coincidently be within driving distance of the Wine Library TV office?

  • Funny, funny. I really never heard the Guiness World record question. Gary was probably wearing a white shirt because he had never done this before.

No offense, but I now have a new favorite online video blog host.

WOW! A new favorite has emerged. Joanne is quite charming and also demonstrates that wine is a very individual thing! Are her eardrums okay?

    SUPER GREAT show

A charming brit + GV + Vintage Champagne – who can beat that! 🙂

  • Panosh

QOTD: Black Shirt I think. Had not made it back that far (yet) but it was interesting. A lot less energy. Good day though (B-day).

Must give Co-hosts a heads up on question as not everyone is as creative as GV.

    Very fun

gary, you need to bring her back. her british sass and wit jives well with your jerseyness. i mean that in the best possible way. i think the culturally savvy person with some wine knowledge but not jeffrey davies like can work well. i still think you fed her some lines like ‘burnt tire”, that or she did her homework. thumbs up.

champagne, in terms of france. outside of champagne, people drink “champagne” for special occasions. they drink cremant d’….. more often cause it doesn’t cost 30 euros. but more like 12. in champagne though, people drink champagne for almost every aperotif. maybe not on tuesday night alone, but surely when people come over.

QOTD: what the hell was the question joanne?
ps jayhitek – be a gentleman

  • Hey Gary, your show picked me up after a rather rough exam. I always look forward to weekday evenings!

When people ask you what’s up with the crazy references, I like your answer: “That’s what it smells like to me.” But when you have people who say stuff like: “Obviously the wine doesn’t have in it.” Maybe you should pull out the geek-speek:

Every wine has hundreds of different substances that give it its flavors and aromas, and they are all present in other materials/foods (Peynaud, Lichine). Our sense of smell works by our receptors recognizing substances at the molecular level, so if a wine smells like bananas, you can be sure that it has a molecule that is identical or very similar to the molecule that gives bananas their aroma.

    My thoughts on this show:

Gary, you always do a great job, no matter who the guest is, or how the wines are. That said, this show didn’t work for me. I felt like Joanne really got in the way of you doing your thing. I understand that it might be good to have a really inexperienced guest on, to connect with your viewers who are new to wine, or who are trying to introduce their friends to wine. Joanne, though, seemed less open to what you have to say because of her experience. Maybe it’s a European thing, but I felt like she has drunk wine most of her life and yet somehow not had an epiphany that turned her into a wine lover, so she assumes theres nothing more to wine. She just seemed a little disinterested and…how to put it…disrespectful? I think your approach really works for American non-winos, but European non-winos are a whole different cricket game – they have a certain ignorance+confidence mix that is puzzling to us wine-scared Americans. Also I’m not sure what she contributed as a Web 2.0-er.

I absolutely loved your guests like Jeffrey Davies and the somms, Andre Mack and others, and DK. I would like to see more of that. I felt a little uncomfortable in the earlier episodes when you had the winemakers on – I know you were still tasting from your own gut, but felt your need to be tactful about what you tasted.

In any case, lots of commenters seem to have liked her, so maybe it’s just me, but I really don’t think this is a direction I want to see WLTV go in.

I want to see more Davies! Maybe even Parker (ok that’s not so much of a WLTV episode, but a “see which wine god is left standing after the inevitable clash of titans” episode). In terms of connecting with newbies… you do that by yourself so well in each show with your mini-rants and references to how to build your palate and your reminders to trust our own palates.

    -Rajiv.

P.S. You could TOTALLY take Parker. Respectfully, of course.

Please don’t let her return – she can’t seem to hold her wine and she didn’t add a lot of perspective.

Nice episode today! I was glad you put on the Finca Sandoval!!!! Although I haven’t had the ’04, I love the ’05. It was great to hear someone speaking French on the show, thanks Joanne. And how did Joanne ever get through living in France? It’s quite difficult to be a lightweight in Europe!

QOTD: Not quite sure what you asked dear.

My palate and descriptions all come from memory, its the most important part of describing wine. The corner of a dorm room? I hope you went to College, otherwise it must have been one hell of a party. That snickers bar, now that is a classic memory tool which you will NEVER forget.

Hey Gary- Sounds like you have some fans that are a bit jealous of your guest. Why hate? Should guests be serious and pretend to be wine snobs? Why not just be honest and give your real reaction to wine. If you smell it and it makes you dizzy, that’s pretty funny, if not the “acceptable” thing to say.
I love it when you have co-hosts; it shows you are not afraid to shake things up a bit and stray from the usual routine. The best part about your show is the loose improve quality, and Joanne was definately keeping you on your toes!

I really have no idea what the QOTD was. But that Joanne sure is cute. I could talk to her all day. Lizzy’s gonna be a little jealous after watching this show because there was certainly some chemistry going on there. Great show. The guest shows always end up being my favorites, especially when the guests are as lovely and charming as Ms. Colan. Always a sucker for the accent. Here’s to more guests on the T-show in ’08.
