BTW, I stopped by the store today and had an absolutely great time. Not only was the staff very helpful and informative, but they just kept the samples coming. The variety was not to be believed! Amazing! And if the cheese was not enough, there were sausages, smoked trout, pesto, and olive oil samples as well! Needless to say, I’ve got enough cheese and other goodies to last a long while;-) Thanks again Gary and all the folks behind the scenes for your very hard work! You are the best!

QOTD: I think the only under $5 wine I’ve ever had that I can remember loving was after watching WLTV and buying the Berco do Infante Reserva Estremadura. LOVED IT.

Didn’t read a lot of comments after the episode with Joanne, but I’m a bit disillusioned by the superficial comments being left after the show. I’d hate to see what kinds of comments would be posted if you ever had a female guest that didn’t meet the “hotness” factor. Cheers to having a female guest, and cheers to Joanne. Keep it real.

I liked your explanation of the relationship between fruit and tannins/structure. I took me so long to figure that out on my own.

The best sub-$5 wines I’ve had were in pre-Euro Spain. Most of them were from Penedes and cost around 500 pesetas which probably was the equivalent of between 3-4 US dollars then. I could shamelessly walk into the local wine shop and say I wanted to spend only 500 pesetas and they suggested a wine at or below that cost. And then they would say, here, we had this for dinner, check it out. It was pretty awesome.

QOTD: I cannot remember the last time I had a 5 bones wine but I would guess it was either Sutter Home or Boones Farm. 🙂

Thanks for the Saturday show. I just got back from a day of errands and “Cloverfield” (not good at all) and I sat down with a bottle of Allende and voila! we have a treat on a Saturday!

QOTD: a 1.30 euro cali chardonnay I found in a supermarket in france. It was actually terrible (obviously!) but I can’t think of any other wine I’ve had at that price. Granted the last thing I should have gone for at that price was a cali chardonnay. Sorry(?)

Eating cat food. Now that should eliminate the wine snobs that didn’t like your guest on Thursday!

QOTD: It had to be Boones Farm back in the 70’s. I think the band bought that stuff by the truck load back then…. Wow that was a flash back.

oh, I also just drank a bottle of red arbois pupillin, fizzUGLY color, really, but damn good, DAMN good! Very strange wine, made me like it all the more.

About 15 years ago I bought a case of Muscadet Sevre et Maine for $1.98 a bottle with the case discount. Great on a hot summer day and with fish. It didn’t require any deep thought – you just popped the cork and drank the stuff.

When did you smell sheep’s butt? And I really haven’t had to many good experiences with sub $5 wine, but now i know what to look for when i’m poor.

$5 wine…..it does not exist up here…..I have never had any of them but would love to try….

We’ve only tried one Bornarda so far and it was so so. We’ll have to try some more.

I have had wine that smells like the DRIED cat food, but not the WET cat food, which is way more nasty. My cat doesnt even eat the wet cat food. Try the dried Gary.

I honestly have never had a good under $5 wine. I did drink a really cheap grocery store wine my friend bought, I think barefoot something, and it tasted gnasty. I nearly spit it out, it was that bad, but then again, they don’t have the best selection in the grocery stores in college station, tx. I normally have to go to a wine shop down the street to get anything decent, and it still isn’t that great.

the best sub $5 wine i ever had was also from argentina, but was a blend of malbec and merlot, i believe. can’t remember the name of it, but a friend broke it out when i was at his place. stuff had great fruit, but also a really cool green pepper thing going on, that made it interesting. easily the best sub $5 wine i’ve had, and it was better than a lot of sub $10 wines i’ve had to boot.

Absolute best under $5 wine was that liter of mourvedre we pumped “en frac” into our empty plastic water bottle after pulling over our barge along the Canal du Midi. Cost was 0.88 Euros from the local co-op, but it wasn’t that the wine was a 90+ effort, but that the wine, the people we were with and the barge experience combined to make it an unforgettable memory.

One more time… I’ve never had wine that cost ‘less than sign’ $5. Hold on, I had some boxed wine over at a friend’s house which would probably qualify. It was, as Miles would say, quaffable but not transcendent.
Today at a wine tasting I heard myself utter Sniffy-Sniff. I don’t know what to think of that… apparently the GV lingo has permeated my cranium.
