EP 391 The Wonderful World Of Petit Verdot

Oh boy Gary will be in a good mind set today as he gets to taste his boyhood love “Petit Verdot” 🙂 Honestly a grape that is on the rise with global warming.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2006 Pago del Vicario Petit Verdot Rosado
2004 Murphy Goode River Ranch Petit Verdot 2004
2003 Stonegate Wappo Vineyard Petit Verdot
2006 Pearmund Petit Verdot

Qotd: had a few in Virginia this past year at a tasting that were dynamite. Unfortunately they were all done blind so I'm not sure which one was the best

The last words of your 200th episode made it sound like you’d never make it to 400…you’re getting scary close to the big episode 4 double oh.

Thanks for all your hard work.

    2) see above
    3) nothing but my pocket book and a trip to the wine cellar!!! which I will promptly do tonight!

ps. Anyone reading this know where I can get some varieties of Torrontes near Chico, CA. Its seems to be a rare find and I don’t want to spend money on getting it shipped to me.

I had a Brookfield Petit Verdot 14%. Around 6-7$ in Sweden. A bit young but very interesting.

QOTD: I’ve of course had many red blends that have included petit verdot, but not a lot of wine that’s this varietal on its own. In my racks, though, I have two that I bought after enjoying them at a wine tasting. One is 2004 Arrayán Petit Verdot Méntrida (Spain), and the other is 2004 Januik Petit Verdot Ciel du Cheval Vineyard (Washington). Perhaps it’s time to pull one from the racks and give it a whirl! 🙂

  • QOTD: I haven’t had Petit Verdot. I’ve started to experiment with wines this year so I’ll pick one up this week to try.

Never had a PV before. Even though today’s show didn’t exactly make me want to run out and find one, I’d still like to try one. There are many other priorities for me right now…spain, sancerre, burgandy (white and red).

QotD: I have not had a PVerdot, except maybe blended with something. No real reason, there are just so many wines to try that I haven’t come across one in my travels. It’s on the list, though.

QOTD: I have not had a PV yet, im still new to wine and mainly drink whites. I seem to have this barrier against reds for some reason. I havent found a red with the drinkability of the whites i have. If i have a red i can usually only manage to drink a glass before it starts to erk me.

Wow, early show today. No, I have not had a Petit Verdot, and even though I’ve lloked, I have not seen one in the wine shops. If I ever find one in my price range, I will. Maybe in my next order I’ll use it to complete a half dozen.

I’ve had the Petit Verdot made by Sutcliffe Vineyards in McElmo Canyon, Colorado. Very peppery, but enjoyable. Hey Gary, when are you gonna review some of our Colorado wines? We’re not Napa Valley, but there is some good stuff out here!

Nice feature on Rocketboom today. Never had a straight PV, but looking forward to seeking one out to try.

I’ve had a few, perhaps 3-4 different versions:

Januik, Murphy-Goode, and Pirramimma all come to mind. The Pirramimma was the best of the bunch.

No Petit Verdot here that I can remember. I’ve just never had somebody recommend it to me. I’ll go out there and see what I can find.

  • QOTD: Never had it. (Man, am I deprived.)

Then again, it’s not exactly common in my area, and I’m currently in a budget crunch (damn gas company).
