QOTD: I’ve been doing computer work for Lazy Acres Market, in Santa Barbara California, for about 4 years now. After I turned 21 I started nagging our Wine department manager to give me some hours in his department (we’ve got one of the best selections in SB), but he always had all the help he needed with his full timers. About 3 months ago that manager left our store to work on a new chain of California Wine stores; but the new manager that took his position gave me the opportunity to pick up some hours over this very busy holiday season (nov-jan). At that point I dove into the wine world head first. I started tasting anywhere from 10-100 wines a week, visited all the local wineries around Santa Barbara, took a little trip to Napa, organized a weekly wine group and DISCOVERED WINE LIBRARY TV! I’ve since been lurking about, but wanted to take this QOTD opportunity to come out of the shadows and thank GV for being totally AWESOME and the WLTV community for making this one of best shows online and anywhere. looking forward to reading comments and watching the show throughout the 400s. Happy tasting, keep it fun!

I am very picky about wine now. I donâ??t care about the rating, wine maker or varietal. If I donâ??t like it, Iâ??ll dump it and go to something else. And not in a pretentious way. Life’s too short to drink bad wine.

QOTD: In last six months I started watching The Thunder Show!!!!! Actually about 5 months ago at the start of football season. Football and wine. Two of my favorite things.

Another thing I discovered was the wine section at a local store in Charleston, WV, Drug Emporium (The D.E.) They have a awesome selection at good prices and they always have a sale rack. I also started a notebook so I can remember what I like and jot down Gary’s suggestions. Thanks Gary.

QOTD: I finally ran out of room in my wine cellar. Rather than stacking boxes of wine on the floor, I made the decision to start enjoying some of the keepers to create space for the new. Very happy with my decision so far.

  • Great show Gary, but I have to say I disagree with your Super Bowl prediction. The Giants have a defense, and I think Brady is going to get sacked. Anyways, my biggest wine changing moment in the last six months would have to be watching you on Conan for the very first time. It really opened my eyes and showed me the complexity of wine.

  • QOTD: I have taken a few classes, and tried new wines, every week learning so much but the best change is being a part of Vayniac Cab. It is truly hands on and I never thought I would have the opportunity to experience this side of the industry. I am looking forward to the end product to share with family and friends.

QOTD: Learning to love the secondary characteristics of wines after they age. Aged wines show more of the tobacco, cedar, sour cherry and other classic flavors. I am drifting more toward France and away from Cali and Australia.

Funny about Falesco in the lower price points, it seems that you see a lot of bottle variation. At least that is what I am seeing from the Vitiano over the last few years.

Cheers and God Bless for the comments about loved ones. Sometimes we get too busy with our crap to realize what is really important.

    Cheers.

  • First off, this is my first post, and I am no longer a lurker.

QOTD: In the last six months I started requesting that restaurants decant my wine before I get there. If anyone is in Portland, OR there is a great steak place called the RingSide. check out their site, the have a pretty impressive wine list (for my standards) http://www.ringsidesteakhouse.com/ – we had the Ponzi Vineyards, Willamette Valley â??05, pretty overpriced I think at $55, but I wasn’t there to be cheap, I had a freakin $50 steak, totally worth it! The wine had a beautiful bouquet and I wonder if that had a lot to do with the fact that I don’t usually decant when I’m drinking at home (I’m a bachelor, I have two wine glasses and a swiss army knife, I’m working on it)

Anyways, none of that would have happened with out WLTV, thanks Gary!

    Blessings,

    -Matt

  • QOTD:- Biggest change is two fold – hunting down different varieties more than before, including even whites which I shunned and playing with them – with food, no food, warm, cool, after being opened for a while. Or it could be sharing and infecting my friends and family w/ enthusiasm for trying many different wines and dissecting them amongst ourselves and getting what we get out of them.

  • QOTD: Every weekend I am buying different wines now. Before I always bought good beer and only had wine for dinner, and I usually bought the same wine over and over again.

  • Today’s wine sums up my experience with Sangiovese, I’ve been relatively unlucky with it the last couple of years, I tend to avoid it by choice and concentrate on the other Italian grapes which tend to serve me better (Corvina, Nero D’Avola, Primitivo, Aglianico (that’s yours!) etc…).

QOTD – I’ve gone semi-Pro on wine writing, contributing to a new U.S. Blog using my new found Wine palate and the fact I travel the world on business so get to experience a bit more than the average consumer.

Talking of travel – how is this I.P. blocking going to affect me on the road, I often watch WLTV from different countries and different computers, I’ll be pissed if you’ve cut me out Mr V.

QOTD – I have started to drink A LOT more whites…originally thinking that whites were the “bastard children” of wine.

QOTD: Nuthin in my wine behavior changed… always been open to everything and willing to try it all. Except, now a portion of my budget goes to WL 😉 But I must admit, I gave away some Stag’s Leaps cuz they were WAAAY over oaked – I’m not seduced or my palette changed?… but made some friends happy that day.

    Superbowl – it’s only a game 😉
