Petite Verdot- after your ranting/raving and pounding it into me to try it, I did over the weekend. What a nice funky wine… I was getting a meaty roasted tomato (read ragu) nose, yeah my friends gave me a funny look but thanks to Wine Library I was OK saying it.

  • Pardus

I have always loved Cab. Franc, but never had anything from Loire valley. I am running up to Austria this week, so I will see if I can find anything from the Loire valley.

QOTD: I am going to be defiant.

I like the chocolaty, smoky style of cab franc. My favorite was the 2004 Hess Collection. A wonderful wine is the 2004 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cab Franc, but it is nothing like the Hess. I think that overall, 2004 was probably the best year recently (in California) for cab francs. 2005 is turning out to be more of a merlot/cabernet sauvignon year. I’m curious how the 2004 Larkin compares to the 2005.

I’ve really been on the look out for a vegetal cab franc. The last cab franc i had was from the okanagan; it tasted like cherry cotton candy and maple smoked bacon. it was nice but i was really looking forward to the herbaceousness

great show GV….. if you’re reading this, got a question for you
in jesper hill, you tried the georgia’s paddock quite sometime ago….. but the top of the range is emily’s paddock, shiraz with small blend of cab franc…. is it similar to shiraz viognier blend but this one gives more depth instead of brightness?

Hey GV, stop it already! 😉
Loire, Languedoc, Faugeres… you’re driving up demand for my favorite wines. 😉
Having said that, I think Cabernet Franc from the Loire will be a bit off-putting for many people not familiar with it.

I’m not trying to break your balls here kid, but isn’t “grounded meat” more like a steak that’s got no beefs, or a burger that’s wired to the ground? Ha ha. And by the way, when are you going to the french countryside again so we can get some more reports on what it’s like over there? You’re doin’ good, keep it up.

    Hey GV!!

Everybody knows you rock. Hard. But I think we all realized how much you DO rock when we have an event that allows us to realize that on a whole new level. Had a blind tasting with friends this week. One of them brought what is arguably one of the best Chinons, Philippe Aliet’s Coteaux du Noiré 02. As soon as I put my nose in the glass, I told myself : “Man, would GV love this wine!” Full of wet earth and dirty veggies, almost no fruit, it was awesome! And I easily guessed the Cab Franc grape and got the appelation too, I was really proud!
Anyhow, keep up the good work!

QOTD: I got 1 Chinon and 1 Bourguiel in my “cellar” and it’s time- I’m popping one of them this week! (I’ll let you know how it was with a retroactive comment here.)

QOTD: Atlanta Fine Wine Festival this weekend… I’ll be looking for the CFs.

Is Larkin still your friend… perhaps you can pull him out from under the bus now.

QOTD: Sorry man. I’m off on a snowboard trip this week and already have 5-6 wines picked out. Maybe when I get back.

PS, kudos on calling em as you see em… I respect a friend much more who can tell me what he really thinks without worrying about my ego.

  • NathanN

Itâ??s time to stock up on the Chinon again. Wife and I love this stuff with pizza. Itâ??s almost like we canâ??t eat pizza unless we are having a bottle from Chinon. Never had one before ep 200 but now itâ??s one of our go to regions.

Props to you G for telling like it is….I could see that you really wanted to like the Larkin….but you kept it real…..Do you think he had to add the Oak due to overripeness or sourcing inferior grapes?

QOTD: We don’t get much CF down here from france….mostly Bordeaux….. but I do have 3 bottles left of the 2005 Frederic Mabileau Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Les Rouilleres that I got from WL so perhaps I will pop one soon…….

I love Cab Franc! There are some great Cab Franc examples in Canada, especially some small producers in Niagara on the Lake. Tawsw, Chateau des Charmes, featherstone just to name a few! Hey Gary, how about a Niagara on the Lake episode?

Just wanted to leave my first comment, I recently discovered the show and watch for a few weeks as a “lurker” but subscribed during the time that I believe you said a lot of lurkers came out about a week ago. I absolutely love the show and the passion GV brings to it. Most definately going Loire Red hunting…I believe there is even a local winery that produces Cab Franc in a Chinon style! Thanks!

QOTD: Actually, just picked up a Cab Franc from Italy. Will have to try one from Loire valley too. I read somewhere that Italian Cab Francs from Friuli are actually Carmenere. Is this true?

    Hi Gary,

I have a Chinon at home that I’ve not tried yet. I’m on vacation down south and will look for a red Loire to try this weekend.

    Talk to you next week.

Absolutely! I actually just had a Cab Franc this weekend that my sister opened up. It wasn’t bad. I am hoping to find one you tasted and compare my notes and see what my “pal” enjoys more!

Hey Madange, it was the Northwest Wine Academy’s 2006. It was a barrel taste. They are about to bottle and we were trying some blends with merlot, petit verdot, and cab sauv. I preferred it 100% cab franc, but they felt people would think it was too funky. I said, “That’s why it’s so goooooood.”
