Purely coincidental that I am drinking a Dark Horse pinot as I watched this. Found it on clearance at Tar-jay. That should have been all the clue I needed, but curiosity got the better of me. Meh is the best I can give it. But, I tried something new! 😉

    Hey Gary-
Haven’t had an Oregon PN in awhile…the last one I had was from the Cristom vineyards.
My brotha from another motha, the Oak Monster…that right OM himself…likes alittle OR PN, but not as much as CA Chard or Cab.
PS – Where’s the love on the 120?

  • Ryan D

QotD: The wife and I don’t often get pinot noir, because frankly it’s an easy grape to screw up and we’ve had some pretty bad wines. Oregon pinot noir is, of course, more expensive than your basic PN because it’s, well… GOOD. At any rate, when planning a nice meal calling for pinot noir to be used we decided to splurge and now of course I forget what it was.

I’ve had a few Oregon Pinot’s but cannot remember which ones. Will definitely give some like EIEIO a try. Cool thing with the ESPN mention. Do you see more hits from it?

QOTD – No, I can’t remember the last OPN I’ve had – I just get a feeling that they are overpriced…

QOTD: Love them, better than Russian River Valley IMO. Last one that rocked my socks was 05 Soter.

  • Woohoo, Oregon Pinot! 😉 A while back you had the Owen Roe Killmore Pinot… I asked for you to taste that when it was in stock, but now you no longer have it! That was great stuff… I was at Lachini thanksgiving weekend and I think I liked the Giselle better than you, but actually found their regular Pinot more “true.” I’ll have to check out the EIEIO… I almost visited them once, but I thought their name was too silly. 😉 Not really…

ONCE in this episode you actually said Oregon correctly! I was so happy! But then about 1.5 seconds later you thought you got it wrong and said it your old, incorrect way again. 🙁 SO sad…

QOTD: Yes, I like Oregon Pinot. The last one I had was a 1998 Lange Three Hills Cuvée my friend brought over… she stored it in her 80 degree apartment for 8 years, and it tasted like it. Just very muted and over the hill. Bummer.

QOTD: Actually, I prefer Merlot a whole lot more than Pinot Noir. Maybe I should make a movie about this! The last Pinot Noir I had that was very good was a French Pinot Noir “La Patriarche” that I purchased in Toronto. La Patriarche was an amazing $10/bottle wine that could have scored in the 90’s, especially the Syrah!!!

Ore-gun, say it with me. Ore-gun. “Ore” did not go anywhere so it is not “gone”

QOTD: Yes to Oregun Pinot, yes to anything for Shea Vineyard. My last PN from OR was Sine Qua Non from Shea Vineyard (Manfred’s name for it is slipping my right now).

  • David Masi

YES…throughly enjoy them! Will have a 2003 Beaux Freres 2003 Ribbon Ridge tonight with dinner. Also enjoy Bergstom Pinots as well. What is insane is the Abacela vineyard in Medford Oregon, doing all Spanish varietals. Their Tempranillo and Albarino is better than most of what I have tried from Spain. I beleive as you do that Oregon & Washington are providing the best values on the left coast.

QOTD……no not in my top 10 favotite grapes

  • QOTD – If I were to drink an American Pinot, it would be an Oregon Pinot, but I don’t particularly care for Pinot, so it will probably be a while before I drink an Oregon Pinot. Although, come to think of it, the one bottle of wine I brought back from New Zealand was a Marlborough Pinot- very good!

Hey Gary. Happy Valentine’s Day to WL and all the Vayniacs!

QOTD: I got hooked on Pinot years ago, and all of them were from Oregon. I’ve been trying Pinots from all over lately. The last OR Pinot I had was a 2005 Saintsbury Carneros.

QOTD — no O-Pinots in several years.. While I drink PN, I rarely buy it. If I did, it would likely be from Oregon, though

QOD: Yes, love them. Ponzi from Oregon was the last one.
When I drink new world pinot and want to splurge I usually go for one of the limited bottles from Babcock like “Ocean’s Ghost” Santa Barbara.

  • QOTD: Haven’t had any yet.

QOTD- Yes! I still love Pinot! Even though Hollywood made it damn pricey!

I especially like the Van Duzer (reserve) pinot out of Willamette Valley.

  • madange

Yes I have tried quite a few Oregon Pinot Noirs. The last one I had was a 2004 Cottonwood Marina Piper that was elegant, feminine, and delicious. That said, I find that Oregon prices have risen faster than their quality and QPR’s are virtually non-existant. Before Sideways, Oregon was one of my favorite places for value driven Pinot Noir of quality. I also think the hype has created a situation where vintages are being sold before the wine is ready. If the winemakers could hold off releasing their wines an extra year or so they would show better. Many of the recent releases I’ve tasted seem tight and/or awkward. Unfortunately, the current market forces them to ship as soon as the latest vintage is bottled. There is also a serious defficiency of vineyards in production relative to the incredible demand for the grapes. Therein lies the dilemma of an Oregon Pinot Noir fan.

As an Oregon rez (not from Carlton – there are probably 53 people in the world from Carlton), SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE EUGENEANS!! I drink Oregon Pinot’s on a weekly basis.

My last one was probably an Illahe 2006 Pinot. For 20 bones, an absolute SCREAMING deal.

  • I’ll be looking for these, but it’s difficult here in Kentucky. Maybe if I could order it from the Wine Library! Darned outdated Kentucky laws..
