Purely coincidental that I am drinking a Dark Horse pinot as I watched this. Found it on clearance at Tar-jay. That should have been all the clue I needed, but curiosity got the better of me. Meh is the best I can give it. But, I tried something new! 😉

Great show. The last Oregon pinot I had was Yamhill estate. I don’t remember too many of the details but I loved it.

last time had pinot is…… quite sometime ago… most likely was from yarra valley, victoria. they don’t have that deep colour saw on those 3… slightly lighter & more floral aromas to them. not quite my type of wine though

QOTD: Yes, I drink more Oregon Pinot Noir than any other kind of wine these days. The last bottle I had was last night, and was the 1997 Thomas. I gave it 90-91 points, and found it perfectly mature with powerful tart dark cherry nose and flavors, along with a touch of minerality and meatiness. Thomas Pinot Noirs have a very small production and are hard to find….almost impossible outside Oregon, but are highly regarded by Oregonians, including the winemakers there. I fell in love with Oregon pinots at the International Pinot Noir Celebration some 19 years ago, and have been a serious collector of them ever since. By the way, I highly recommend the International Pinot Noir Celebration in McMinneville, Oregon, as one of the best wine/food events in the world. I have been 11 times, and am headed back this year.

QOTD- The last pinot from Oregon I had was DePonte, probably the reason for that is because it is my family’s winery. Being as objective as I can be it is solid Oregon pinot and could stand up to any of big boys around here (Oregon). We have a 2 pinot noirs all estate fruit (1200-1500 cases $34), and a Family reserve (150 cases $58) would love to have you try them Gary, let me know if you are interested. Ironically I am not really a pinot guy (get a lot of crap from my family about that), it is way down my list of favorite varietals but I think we are doing it the right way here in Oregon, we have a French winemaker that studied in Burgundy with the Drouhins (Domaine Drouhin by the way is our next door neighbor at the winery and vineyard) we also have the oldest muscadet vines in Oregon and make a couple hundred cases of a white wine we call Melon, hope this doesn’t sound like an advertisement. Be came a Vayniac only four or five months ago amd can’t wait to wear the wine library wrist band at our next big tasting event (I always get to pour the our best wine during those events). I have been a wine geek for 20+ years, have a massive cellar and am having more fun and enjoyment with and because of wine now than I ever have, I am sure you have something to do with that enjoyment.

love Pinot; but mostly Burgundian old world style. There are 2 producers I LOVE from Russian River Valley as well; small boutique winerys with families and GREAT people—Davis Family and Holdredge—they both make Pinots with a little new world pop, but very defined balance in the fruit and acidity-all that is right about Pinot! The last one I had was an 2005 Davis Family that was spectacular. thanks for the show!

Can’t say that I have. I’ll be keeping my eyes open though. The only pinot noir I’ve had so far was really weak.

QOTD: Oregon Pinots?? Can recall the last time I have had one. Other PinotsI have had the Dubakella, I picked up during your last sale. I liked it very much. I do think it leaned a little left towards new world. I like old but still really enjoyed it.

    Thanks

I have one question? why are there 4 to 5 corks on t table and only 3 bottles?? does that mean that a few of them where off?

  • Just had the 2005 Erath Pinot Noir from Dundee hills Oregon last night…not to Burgundy esk but solid…I wrote in my notes that I would like to see how this wine develops over the next 5 years…it had some serious structure and I think it was still closed up a bit…by the way Happy late Valentines day to all!!!!

A day late, but wanted to comment. I look for Oregon Pinot Noirs since having a good Ponzi 10-12 years ago. Siduri is good most years as well. The Oregon Pinot’s seem to have more complexity and balance than most California Pinot’s. Oh yeah, woo-hoo, top 250.

  • QOTD – I am kind of biased as I live in the Rogue Valley in good old Southwest Oregon. I have had numerous Pinot Noirs from different producers in both the Rogue and Willamette valleys. Many of the wineries in S. Oregon are small compred to those in the Willamette Valley. In my opinion some of the small producers here are putting up high quality Pinot Noir. My favorite Pino Noir that I have had recently is from a small producer called Wooldridge Creek Vineyards in Applegate, OR. As I have mentioned before we hope to have a Pinot Gris ready for market sometime this summer, with 24 different grape varieties available for blends in the next 2 years.

qotd -I was just in Portland for three days and was able to tast a number of local wines (they must have been good since I can not remember the names!). Fortunately I have family, friends and a house in the area so we get up there now and then.

Hope you and the wife had a nice Valentines day

The last Pinot Noir I had was from Sineann. They are a small producer of highly intense wine in Yamhill County, Oregon. The owner and wine maker,Peter Rosback, took us through his place and we sampled all of the different Pinots. The fruit is sourced from some of the best vineyards in the the Willamette Valley and the Hood River Valley. He’s a great guy, fervent in all he does, and opened his small winery to us like we were old friends. He spares no expense in the pursuit of great wine. Crop levels are kept very low, one to three tons per acre. The flavor is intense. They really care and strive to make great wine. As Peter has said many times, “It’s the only kind of wine that makes it onto our dinner table. It’s exciting to make and gratifying to share. We believe that food and drink, lovingly prepared, make for happier and healthier people.” Rosebeck also partners sometimes with the Owen Roe Winery (remember Sinister Hand) for some neat events. He makes world class wines, worthy to seek out.

  • Love, Love, Love the Pinot Noir!!! But you can’t touch them price-wise since that dang movie came out. Finding a value Pinot is getting harder and harder. Believe it or not, the Greg Norman is becoming my go-to Pinot at $16/$17.

Favorites of all time: Elizabeth Spencer E/S Label 2004 (Napa), Babcock “Rita’s Earth” Cuvee 2004 (Lompoc/Santa Barbara), and White Mare (Chile). The last Oregon Pinot I had was a Benton Lane 2005, and it was very yummy.

Gary! Good on you for pronouncing “Willamette” correctly! I live 15 minutes from Carlton, OR and am so lucky to have tried many fantastic Oregon Pinots. The last one I tried was from Siltstone Winery. Really, really good. How about more shows on the Northwest? There are some amazing red blends coming out of Washington.

Last great Oregonian Pinot I had was the Belle Vallee Reserve 2005 37 bones. I was fortunate enough to go through Belle Vallee’s entire portfolio with Gabe McGee associate winemaker and son of vineyard owner. Love the wines from Oregon, although the price points are a bit out there. The elgance and quality is there but the values are hard to find.
