We love Sauv Blanc! It used to be my favorite wine, but now my favorite thing is to try something new thanks to Gary. We will always have a soft spot for Kim Crawford, but anything NZ, Sancerre, or Puilly Fume is great! California – meh. Maybe we’ll have to try the Hanna. Thanks for a super-fantastic show Gary! What announcement is coming in 2 weeks???

Good episode in the head-to-head format. I too prefer the Sauvignon Blanc varietal as opposed to Chardonay.

QOTD: My wife and I enjoy Sauvignon’s from around the world. The Sancerre’s, white Burgundies, white Bordeaux’s and Loire Valley wines from France, American Sauvignon’s such as Santa Barbara and Joel Gott, and those from New Zealand such as Kim Crawford, Nobilo, Babich and Cloudy Bay to name a few.

  • Andy & Edie

btw Leif – We would love to try a Dagueneau if we ever see one in Montana – just kinda hard to come by. Did you see the interview Jancis Robinson did with him – he seems like an interesting character!

After watching this episode, found the Spy Valley Savignon Blanc at a local wine store here in Calgary, Alberta (Canada). Enjoyed it that night with a chicken salad. Great Wine!

    Good Show.

QOTD: My current favorite Sauvignon Blanc is the 2006 Kim Crawford, but for the price I thought the 2005 Sunday Mountain ($7.99) was a terrific value.

We like SVs in the spring and summer…they are harbingers of warmer weather for sure! We rarely drink white wine in the cold weather for some reason. All winter long, I have been waiting to open a Groth SV on the first 70 degree day…we live in IL, and I am STILL WAITING! This bottle of Groth has been in our wine fridge for around six months…come ON

Great show GV…what is the surprise, I wonder??!! 😉

    Gary;
This is my 2nd email, which declassifies me as a “lurker”.

I “play” in a restaurant that has Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc
on menu. The staff will be watching this episode.

I think it is a fun exercise to put a “BIG BOY” next to a
“boy next door”. For Example our Reserve Wine List has Pouilly-
Fume, and Sancerre. Our Core Wine List offers a Sauv Blanc from
Coteaux du Giennois (just West Of Sancerre). Is there a $ 34.00
(restaurant dollars) difference between the two???
Love the Show, especially this Episode!
    Cheers-Avery.

    Drink SV a lot…

Of late, the Chasing Venus ’06 and Mahi ’04 are my favorites. Saw both for the first time on this show!

Tried the Nobilo today. Very different from other SB’s, but very good. Made the mistake of trying a Fat Bastard SB right after. The smell and taste reminded me exactly of the Oxy pads I used to use in high school to get rid of zits. Anyone else had that?

  • Mike in MI

The 2006 and 2007 Drylands (NZ) Sauvignon Blancs are both outstanding; very crisp and clean, as a good SV will be. But the one that has been blowing me away for the last year is so much more ubiquitous so as to appear ordinary–as GV thinks it is–but that’s the ’05 and ’06 Kim Crawfords. These are almost lush in profile, with huge floral notes and even some lavendar.

This wine is everywhere, and there’s a good reason for that; it’s outstanding.

  • QOTD: I love Sauvignon Blanc and I had a great Craggy Range recently. Though I suppose the latest was a Kim Crawford on Wed. night that wasn’t bad at all.

The head to head format is really great! Keep those episodes comming!

Especially interesting episode in comparison to #322 (pizza wines, Hanna SB 2006)!

QOTD: YES I love Sauv. Blanc, and the best recent version I had was a 2004 Graves white (Chateau Fort de Roquetaillade), which was of course blended with Semillon and saw some oak. Fantastic back end acidity and smooth midpalate for 12 bones! Otherwise, Pouilly Fume and Sancerre are solid, weightier expressions of Sauv Blanc that I’ve been loving lately.

I really like the head-to head format, please do more. Drylands is my current favorite, used to be Kim Crawford. Babich & Nobilo are hard to beat for the money though.

  • i have only recently began dipping into the cat pee and i’m loving it. started growing fond of this wine through kim crawford and then last night got the chance to taste mary edwards sauv blanc with a table i was waiting on at work. i will definitely be exploring more of this wine and look forward to getting into the french style.

QOTD: I like Joel Gott’s effort. I think the Cali Sauv blanc producers have heard you dissing on their wine and they stepped it up, b/c there’s a lot of good efforts out there this year.

Next head-to-head: Merlot, old world vs. new. And bring out the pricier stuff; people have forgotten that there is such a thing as a serious merlot!

QOTD – I’m weak on Sauvignon Blanc, since Sarah doesn’t like the bitter dryness. I do like Pouilly Fumé and had some great Chilean S-B from Concha y Toro, their Terrunyo offering.

WBW #44. I sorta wondered if Chris would end up doing the hard work on collating all the Blogs for your summary!!! I’ve posted yesterday and on the announcement episode, but to make the Mottster’s life simpler here it is again!

  • My favourite white variety so I finally came out of lurking mode. Oyster Bay is a regular reliable one for me, it’s about S$30 (Singapore Dollar) at duty free here, otherwise closer to $38 in stores. You Americans are so lucky to get wine at such low prices. Would go for the Kim Crawford anytime, it’s sometimes on offer at S$29. My favourite and partly sentimental choice would be Palliser Estates as that is the first sauvignon blanc I remember and when I really started to identify and pay attention to all the wonderful flavours and aromas of sauv blancs. The Monkey Bay is a fun sauv blanc, not too serious, and on offer S$21 so more for daily drinks than the others. Has anyone tried the Veramonte sauv blanc? It’s rated WS 87, from Chile, curious about that one.

GV – I am a fan of the head-to-head competitions!
I began drinking Kiwi Sauv Blancs several years ago and I always tend to have either a Cloudy Bay, Babich, Kim Crawford, or Craggy Range sitting in the fridge (sorry) or the cellar.

To me, there is nothing quite like a very hot day in summer, a porch, a glass of Kiwi Sauv Blanc, and good griends and/or family!
