  • QOTD: I mean, just one? Then it has to be pizza, but others near the top would be chicken parmigiana, prosciutto di parma with cantaloupe, and fresh bread with olive oil.

GV, I love it when you go “old world” (now you got me doing the “”!), because that are the wines I can get here in the Netherlands… Is there any way I can get the next Secret pack sent overseas?!?

QOTD: Risotto al funghi porcini. (Risotto with fresh porcini mushrooms) Had this in a restaurant in Florence with an insane Brunello, you can’t top that…

    QOTD: Gnocchi! Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I’ve been on an Italian wine jag this winter, and I’ve just started to explore barolo (will keep my eyes peeled for the renato and grimaldi). I like the cheaper nebbiolos, too, which is probably a good thing since my other favorite Italian wine is amarone. Thank goodness for ripassas.

GV: for the neophytes in the group like myself, can you explain a little more the difference between sweet & bitter tannins? I didn’t realize there was a difference until I was at a wine tasting yesterday – so it’s perfect timing that you mentioned it today.

    QOTD: Eggplant Parmesan

I recently bought a 2006 Piedmont Rosso blend of Dolcetto, Barbera, Freisa, and Nebbiolo. Sounds interesting. I can’t afford Barolo.

That is actually a very tough question. When in doubt go simple. The most simple decadent Italian food is classic Alfredo sauce with fettuccine, a little coarse ground black pepper, some fresh parm. Oh man, that sounds good.

QotD: Wow, that IS a good question! I’ve always been particularly fond of lasagna and baked ziti, but I’ve once had the joy of enjoying stuffed chicken with spinach leaves and ricotta cheese.

You could have run me over with a HumVee at that moment, and I would have had no regrets about my choices in life. LOL

QOTD: anything my grandmother makes, especially all the stuff from scratch. It’s great having an Italian grandmother.

  • Is the sugar-fied thing becoming more popular in Barolo these days? We had a sugar-fied barolo – 2001 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo – that the wine advocate claimed was in a more rustic style, and it did have a little residual sugar, though with ripping tannins to balance.

QOTD: I find Italian food rather bland and boring. I mean, it’s ok, and all, but I’ve never really been enchanted by the aromas or flavors, compared to French or Asian cuisine. My dad’s not a big fan either, so we rarely have Italian at home.
