qotd: haven’t had a ton from either, and there’s a lot of Austrian wines out there that I wanna try but can’t find. So I gotta go with Gruner for Austria (big surprise) and chenin for South Africa (huge surprise).

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: I havent had a south african or austrian wine in a while (red or white). The best that I can remember was the ’05 Spier Private Sauvignon Blanc or the Waterford Sauvignon Blanc (I dont remember the vintage I had).

QOTD: Have only tried one South African white wine so far, which was a chenin blanc, and my first Austrian wine will be the Schloss Gobelsburg 2005 Renner Gruner Veltliner that is sitting on the rack in my kitchen. I’ll probably pop it within the next month or two.

QOTD: So far every red or white I’ve tasted from South Africa has been a disappointment. BUT I won’t give up. GV would say 0 for 5 is not a big enough sampling. On the other hand I’ve enjoyed 2 of 2 Austrian reds. Haven’t had any white yet. I’ll put Gru-Vee on the “to do” list after I taste a Greco di Tufo. Soon. Definitely soon. I’m in PA. It’s not so easy to find interesting wine without crossing state lines.

Nice passion in the house today. Good to see you amped up on some not too common wines. Need to experiment with some higher end Gruners myself.

QOTD: Mulderosh sav blanc (believe it was 05) sticks out although I did have a pretty good Austrian riesling few years back that was very Moselish.

  • I miss the ‘oohh this’ in the opener!

QOTD: I’ve had both but not enough to really pick a best. They were all good. If I had to say I would actually say a rose sparkler I had from SA, but that’s neither still nor white.

  • Taylor

Great show big wines and big scores.
QOTD I cant think of the last one on the top of my head recently it was prob a trimbach

I love Gruner! Top 5 for sure.

I happened to have a bottle of the Berhard Gruner so I tasted it along with you. My notes were pretty similar (peaches, limeade, slate, very rich, mouthfilling….). I was pretty psyched about that.

Can’t wait for the Secret packs.

QOTD: I love the Hopler wines from Austria. Their Gruner is consistently good, but they have a single vineyard Pinot Noir that is fantastic. I’m spacing on the name though. The grapes are grown next to a salt lake and the wine picks up some salinity on the nose. Very interesting.

QQTD: I have actually never had a South African or Austrian wine. I am definitely going to buy one soon though to experience them.

JETS shout-out. GV – I know you’re trying to cut down the shout-outs, but how about a shout out for Rutgers Football for producing Brandon Renkart, ’07 captain that just signed with the Jets! Keep it in the state (at least with playing fields).

Those sound like truly interesting wines. Thanks.

QOTD: None that we are aware of.

QOTD: The only Austrian wine was the 2004 Höpler Grüner Veltliner, clean and crisp. Really did enjoy it. I’ve had a Bunde Star red blend from South Africa as well, but it was nothing special.

    Always great show!!

LOL @ GV on sports center!! You would miss it if you blinked! Still, props for getting on there, it’s still somewhat of an accomplishment!

QOTD – My wife finds that she cannot drink white wine without getting a headache so we go red all the time.

You seem to have some friends over at ESPN or pay the camera guy a nice tip to make sure you make the highlights of the draft each year too…. LOL, no to shabby.

Keep the variety coming, I hear it is the spice of life.

Shocked that no one has mentioned that Oregon has started making Gruner Veltliner. The two that I’m aware of are Reustle Vineyards in the Umpqua Valley near Roseburg (the first in the USA) and Daedalus Cellars in the Willamette Valley.
