qotd: Not a big sports fan, but having seen this with my Dad on dvd and hearing it referenced over the years many times, I’m going with the the 1958 National Football League Championship game on December 28th that went into sudden death overtime between the Colts and the Giants. Baltimore took what I’ve heard many times referred to as the single greatest football game ever played.

QOTD: Professionally- Mario Lemieux first game back after cancer and scoring 2 goals that night! Go PENS!!! Amateur- Local Highschool Hockey Rivalry Westmont vs McCort state playoffs ’98; 8000+ in hometown attendance! Westy emerged victorious, one of the rowdies student sections ever! I was getting in old ladies faces and tellin em how it is! Watching my brother raise his helmut and skating off the ice after laying it all out there is forever engraved in my heart.

  • Wow, talk about a coincidence, I went to my favorite little Sicilian restaurant last night and they had the Villa Sparina on the menu. After watching this video blog just a couple hours earlier, I had to get the wine despite the high price ($45 – yikes). I drank it while having grilled asparagus with duck egg for my starter and a grilled octopus with chickpeas for my main and I have to say it paired up pretty nicely.

I personally feel this is more of a food wine and not a sipping wine. When I drank it alone I didn’t get the “zippyness” that Gary did. I also thought the “asphalt” thing was a bit too strong – I got honey with a hunk of tar in it. If I was just going to drink wine alone I’d prefer something else I think. But it was beautiful with food. And it was interesting enough that I want to track down other Gavis to try.

  • Favorite moment: hitting a buzzer-beater to win a rec league game my freshman year of high school. Old buddies of mine who were on the other team still bring it up every time they see me. Funny thing was, I never saw the shot drop, because I was busy crying for the foul (and I *was* fouled, darn it).

What’s up with the Fathers’ Day promo? I forwarded my receipt, am I supposed to get some confirmation? Do I just wait 6-8 weeks and hope for the best, like we used to do with all those toys you could get by sending in Cheerios box tops?

  • QOTD: In the 6th grade I caught my very first outfield fly ball. I was scared, so I closed my eyes and put my glove up in the air… and smack the ball landed in my glove.

So now we have to wait until Monday? This has turned into a bad parody of “Who shot J.R..” I’m outta here until GV gets back to his roots.

QOTD : tough – got to be out of Steve Larkham’s injury time field goal for a last ditch win Australia V South Africa in the 1999 Rugby World Cup, or the famous 1999 Cricket World Cup : Australia beat South Africa with 2 balls left in the super sixes to go through to the semi, where they meet South Africa again, and tie to go through to the final where they easily beat pakistan – what a great year !

QOTD: Has gotta be the 1980 winter olympics miracle on ice. One of the greatest if not THE greatest upsets in sports history. The equivalent of the US mens hockey team beating the Russians would be akin to a college football team beating teams like the 49ers or Cowboys during their respective dynastys.

i think gavi is new for me- thanks for the intro! QOTD: Raiders v Jeff Morgan 1996

My guess is this is GV’s way of drawing the “lurkers” out getting us … ahem them, to participate in the discussion.

Left one earlier, 1980 miracle on ice, but have to also give props to the 1987 PSU vs. Miami game. Go Lions!

Edie’s favorite sports moment was when the Broncos took the Superbowl with John Elway’s winning touchdown. We really want to try to find some Gavi’s, they seem right up our alley!

  • Cool. I’ve been exploring Italian wines but don’t recall having a Gavi. Once again you’ve expanded my wine world. Thanks Gary.

    Never had a Gavi… yet.

QOTD: 1) Watching my Son pitch his first Little League game and earning a last inning save.

    2) Winning the National Platform Tennis Championship Father-Son Tournament with my dear, departed Dad years ago which was a huge upset due to my ability. It was the only year the tournament was held to my knowledge.

QOTD: Eli Manning avoided what looked like a sack and completed a 32 yard pass to wide receiver David Tyree who made a leaping catch by pinning the ball on his helmet which put them at New England’s 24 yard-line. Four plays later, New York wide receiver Plaxico Burress caught the winning touchdown with 0:35 left. Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who threw both touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, was named the Most Valuable Player.

When Matt Hoffman pulled the first 900 on his warehouse halfpipe. That was huge. And the outtakes where he’s learning it and riding off the side into that pole – damn, that’s commitment.

Oh, and Steve Graham getting the first double back flip on camera. That was the turning point – a paradigm shift.

Had Sparina in my closet for the last couple of nights. Going to pop that one this weekend, see what folks think.

That is your best sign off ever. Short, sweet, and truth. Good show.

Won the Summer Series E fleet Championship in 2003. (Sailboat racing) That was the participative highlight. The Spectator Highlight was the 2001 Fiesta Bowl when my alma mater Oregon State Univ. beat the crap out of Bob Davies Notre Dame team with the future “Ocho Sinco” scoring at will. I was there that day with my family and we had a blast!

QOTD: On-loan goalkeeper (Jimmy Glass) scoring with the last kick of the last match of the 1999 season to keep Carlisle United in the English Football League. Basically saved the club from going out of existance. He was a rubbish goalkeeper though!

2002, in the last game of the regular season, two of the top rated high school hockey teams that are long time rivals were playing for a conference championship. I had coached players from both teams for several years on an off season select team. It was a very fast, extremely physical, hard fought game that ended with a 1 goal difference. While the rest of the players glared at each other and the fans continued taunting each other and the players, the kids I had coached met at center ice embracing, congratulating each other and reminiscing. Priceless!
