Never had a lagrein , and went online to three stores around here, and they don’t carry it either…maybe Gary will make it a free shipping wine of the day sometime…

And now, a day later I’ve had my first Lagrein. An Alois Lageder 2004. Great nose bit thin reviewed on corkd but a great experience. Going into my wine store the guys had never heard of the grape but I knew they had at least one (it’s one of the larger Chicago wine stores) so we went on a goose chase for it and was great. The guy in the store said finding these wines was his favorite part of the job and he might have to pick this one up because I (through WL) peaked his interest. Great times.

Just wanted to mention that Alto Adige is the Italian name for Southern Tyrol (Sued Tirol) which until the end of WWI was part of Austria. It’s changed hands a few times over the years, but most people there are bilingual German/Italian and so are the names of cities etc. Hence the names of wineries don’t sound so Italian sometimes. Also the style of wine is completely different, lighter etc. You won’t find Lagrein anywhere else in Italy, Austria or Germany.
Btw, the region is famous for its hiking, climbing and skiing. It’s on the south facing side of the Alps and couldn’t be more beautiful….go there!

QOTD: NO! And I’m ashamed. I have heard of Lagrein, but have never had one. You have my word that I will initiate a “seek-out session” for one this week. Coincidentally, though, I just popped a Pinot Bianco from Alto Adige tonight from a very German/ Austrian- like producer…

Never had, or heard of, Lagrein… and I consider myself a pretty ‘serious’ wine lover. There are actually lots of Old World wines that never make it out here to the West coast.

QOTD. Yes, I’ve had Lagrein, but only a few different ones. Certainly no more than a dozen. I have liked Lagrein from Marco Donati and Abbazzia di Novacella and Weingut Mayr-Nusser. A number of Lagreins have given me blueberry flavors. I don’t recall tasting one that gave me the structure or Old World funkiness you described here.

I would love to try these wines, but you can NO LONGER SHIP TO ILLINOIS. What can we do about that? How can I help?

Another varietal I’ve not heard of, but, will be all over if found; although, it it appears to be very hit-or-miss with the flavor profile.

    Thanks, G.

I never tried Lagrein wines. Are they difficult to find? Sounds like something I would like.

  • I’ve never had a Lagrein… not sure if I would like them. I’m wondering how much of that funky barnyard/cheese effect is from brettanomyces ya know, which I’m not a fan of, the nasty little yeasty buggers. I know it’s natural, but I’m not a fan of the funk and usually think it’s mistaken for ‘terroir’ heh heh.

  • First time I had a La Grien was several years ago care of Tobin James’ (a Paso vineyard) wine club shipment. It was a big, fruity, structured wine – definitely brought the thunder. From there I’ve tried a few others and have seen this grape on a few wine lists even – so its out there! Definitely encourage all to try it.

QOTD: No, I haven’t tried a Lagrein or even heard of it until this episode of WLTV. It sounds like a wine that I will be wanting to try sometime soon, after I scout out a place that carries it. Let the hunt begin!

Lurkers come out of the woodwork and participate in the exchange of thought and ideas here. Gary is giving 110% in producing WLTV, so please give him the honor of commenting on his shows.

I just finished reading all 317 comments (besides my previous one, that is) and was blown away by the number of lurkers who had come out to speak up on this episode.

Gary, you really brought the thunder on this one by introducing many people to a varietal that they had never heard of and are anxious to try.

Changing the wine world, each of us, with a lot of help from our buddy Gary V.

    You rock Gary….. THANKS

Nope, never had the Lagrein, but I love that old world earthiness… Perhaps I should try this stuff. Checked two stores out here in CA, and no Lagrein!
