EP 495 The Other 46

Gary Vaynerchuk tastes a few wines generously contributed by some Vayniacs who stopped through after visiting wineries in the mid-Atlantic. Gary was excited to try these 3 reds from some of “The Other 46” states and wants to taste more!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2005 Chaddsford Due Rossi
2005 Linden Petit Verdot
2005 Basignani Cabernet Sauvignon

You can’t mark Maryland off that list yet Gary, that wasn’t a Maryland wine. I don’t know what you call that swill, but it’s not wine.
Qotd: Next time I’m up there, I’ll drop you off a bottle of BLACK ANKLE. That is a wine from Maryland that rocks. Every time I serve it to a guest they can’t believe it came out of MD. Maryland can make great wine, it’s hard to get the capital to do so for small wineries here though with our archaic liquor laws.
I don’t know why I continue to watch this episode because it makes me cringe at the end.
Although that look you have when you spit out the Basignani cracks me up, because it’s my reaction to it as well. I’d be really surprised if the person who gave that to you was from MD, or had ever had any basignani before.

  • Hey Gary, how about a wine from the littlest state with the OLDEST vineyard in New England, Sakonnet Vineyards (http://www.sakonnetwine.com). They produce some interesting varieties and it would be interesting to see what you think about the Ocean State’s offerings! Love the show as usual and I’m pretty upset I’ve missed every opportunity for a 4th Generation EVERY TIME, including BOSTON!

Holy Shiz. My wife and I went to MD circa 1995 and stopped by Basignani on Robert Parker’s suggestion and were blown away by their Cabernet Sauvignon. It was unfiltered, lots of sediment, and tasted like a grilled Porto Bello mushroom and we loved it. So I was disappointed to hear the 2005 was…sucky.
The Linden tastes like a CAVE? Laughed out loud. Lots of love.

Oh forgot…If you have the chance, try a newer NJ winery – Cava Winery. Surprisingly good reds. Seriously. No, really.

  • Linden also does a “Hardscrabble Chardonnay” that is outstanding. A buddy of mine who is now the West Coast manager for Neal Rosenthal wrote the following tasting note on Cellartracker about the ’99

“WOW. This has to be up there with the all-time great ringer performances I’ve witnessed… A $20-ish,1999 Chardonnay – from Virginia – inserted into a flight of 1er Cru white Burgundy, and it’s picked by the group as one of the top two wines in the flight… Again, this shows the value of blind tasting. TN: Intense citrus (lime / lemon zest), yellow fruit, custard. In the mouth, fairly pronounced acidity up front, tailing to a nice finish. Bright, fresh and balanced. The group consensus: Puligny-Montrachet… Not surprisingly, we could not stop talking about this one for the rest of the evening. I need to go see this local vineyard and congratulate the winemaker.”

  • OK but not AK?

Have you come across any wines from Alaska? And if you did, did it smell like petro or salmon?

  • QOTD: I would love to send something from Maine — I will see if I can get my Mom on that project, since I’m not in the states right now.
Don’t forget, you can check off Arkansas — I brought that one when I came over in Feb., remember?
    Good show! Thanks.

Great show very interesting, would like to try the linden.

QOTD Because although we’re kicking ass in sports the wine coming out of MA is hurting at best

I sent an email to a few Nebraska wineries and asked them to consider sending in a wine (and a T-Shirt). Hopefully you will receive something soon.

Anyone know of any wine tasting groups in eastern Nebraska?

    Love the show GV!!

Gary, your Arizona wines are on the way. Two from Callaghan and two from Dos Cabezas. There may be a few more that Kent Callaghan is trying to get from other wineries. All are coming express delivery from the wineries to prevent heat damage and you should have them in a few days.
