  • I like when I go to tastings and people wolf down the cheese cubes all at once. I feel like saying, HEY, those are for CLEANSING YOUR PALATE! But I just usually drink water, honestly. Esp. since you’re supposed to drink 2 glasses of water for every glass of wine.

  • I really like not quite cold, but chill sparkling water. Like the crystal geyser we had out at Crushpad for Episode 500.

This was a pretty good show, i really like zin’s so i would be interested to see where this woot Cellars “Wannabe” goes..

QOTD: i have been trying out gary v’s method lately and choosing E) NONE. however, in earlier years (before i considered myself a vayniac) i would wipe my palate clean often with a triscuit and a small slice of brie. By the way, i have no idea if this was at all a good idea, i just really liked triscuits and brie cheese at the time and had heard that cheese was good between wines..

Crackers or bread or cheese or water it depends on what my mouth needs which is a direct result of the kind of wines I am tasting. Usually like others I can taste 4 wines or so before needing something, but I do like to eat while I enjoy and think about wine.

Seems like a good dude. I will check out the woot thing. – never heard of them before.

I’ve been abig fan of Woot for a while now, “Woot-Off’s are fun! Keep an eye on wine.woot, sometimes they have Sake from an American producer and sometimes other gourmet products…and the writing is really funny.

QOTD: regular water and a piece of french bread

    Gary,

    Woot blows!

I ordered a three-pack of Ty Caton wines from Woot in January 2007. I paid $54.95 plus the $5 shipping. I mentioned when I placed the order that the temperatures in the midwest would be fifteen degrees or so below normal for the forseeable future and asked that the wine be shipped when it was safe to do so.

The Caton arrived later that week and, sure enough, all three bottles had popped their corks due to freezing. I e-mailed the folks at Woot and explained the problem. They e-mailed back that I had to send my complaint to a different e-mail address. (I guess the thought of just forwarding my original e-mail to the proper person was more thought than they were capable of.) I did as I was asked. This person tried passing the buck back to employee #1. And it went back and forth and on and on, nearly rivaling the McEnroe-Borg Wimbledon final of many years ago.

I eventually had to take pictures of the three exploded bottles (which I still have to remind me of being caught in the endless ‘Woot Maze of Incompetence’) and copies of all of my excruciating correspondence with these inbreds to my credit card company to get my sixty bucks back.

So pass along these three tidbits to Dave S. for me:

    1. I wouldn’t order wine from Woot if they were the last on-line wine retailer on Earth.

    2. I use ‘wootblows’ for a few of my on-line wineshop passwords.

    3. If I see someone from Woot, I will fight them.

    Regards,

    A Satisfied Customer

I always like the shows with guests because the interaction is fun!
QOTD – I usually reach for something very neutral tasting, a saltine, a piece of bread (baguette), a cracker of some other sort.
I typically only do this between whites and reds, not as often for various styles of reds.

  • QOTD: Water is best but I often just wait between samples. Sometimes a SMALL amount of a neutral cracker or piece of bread – not too much butter or salt.
I think a bigger deal is what you rinse your glass with. I like that Gary rinses with the next wine. Too many wineries rinse with water and most don’t give as generous a sample as Gary uses in his tastings. Therefore the wine gets significantly watered down (could be 10% or more!). When you do the “rinsy-rinse” please use wine and not water!

QOTD: I often don’t cleanse my palate at tastings because there really isn’t anything there to use. Water helps some for me. I think a mild bread or a unsalted soda cracker works best.

  • Is it just me or is the mic’ on your camera getting less sensitive? – the sound quality is awful.

Good show though, even if I can’t Woot.

QOTD – Typically none of he above, very occasionally a swirl & spit of water.

That guy is pretty cool. Woot will be a website that will go into my daily website rotation. QOTD: I like the palate clense. Definitely when trying a bunch of similiar wines to diferentiate them. I go old school with the oyster cracker.

Gotta be careful of the wine woots, the cheap stuff they sell from mywinesdirect is definantly garbage. Much better to buy Gary’s picks from WL.

  • A dumb Rhein king

I had to look up what jumping the shark meant 🙂 I used to watch Happy Days all the time as a little kid, but I don't remember that ep. Really the only one that I remember is when the diner burned down and the Fonz tried to break the cement bathroom wall with his head in his helmet … and proceeded to knock himself out.

QOTD: I like floury crackers or saltine type foods plus water to cleans my palate at a tasting. Just because when going through all of those tables, it's nice to bring the palate down to a simple taste every now and then.
