I had the Balvenie 15 – Year and was underwhelmed. Very smooth, but not much character to get excited about. The 10-Year Macallan on the other hand was half the price and much tastier:

Great show! I love Highland Park, and Caul Ila (I think this is how it is spelled. Very smokey and peaty. Yum.

QOTD: I can’t get too excited about international corporations.

I’m bettin scotch is huge among wine lovers given the ability to analysze flavors and noses just like wine. Sweet show. I know nothing about Apple other than their stuff looks cool.

I would be very interested to see many more Scotch tasting episodes. There are way too many wines out there for me to stay monogamist, but with Scotch – I can say, “this is what I fancy” and not feel ? I am missing out! Unlike wine, with Scotch I can be very satisfied sticking to what I like.

Try Glenmorangie [Port Wood Finish, Sherry Wood Finish and my favorite Nectar d?Or] and Macallan next time.

Lagavulin, Oban, Caol Ila are great if peat is your thing, if not, stick with the Macallan and the Dalwhinnies…

Awesome a Scotch episode…. about a month ago I went to a tasting with a rep from The Glenlivet and it was really cool. I got to taste the whole line of Glenlivet single malts and spent like 2 hours talking to the guy and asking all kinds of random questions. But anyway the main point was that rocks are always a bad idea for scotch because the cold closes down the flavor profile just like with beer or wine. Distilled room temperature water is preferred with only like 10%-20% of the volume of the Scotch, which he said opened up the flavor and after trying all of the Scotches without and then with water there was definitely a big difference especially in the cask strength which is of undetermined variable higher alcohol levels because it isn’t regulated down with water like regular strength and also isn’t filtered and a splash of water makes a HUGE difference. Also the swirling was good for the sniffy sniff to get more of the scent into the air in the glass. My favorites from the tasting were the 15 y/o french oak which has 30% stored in new french oak for 3 years before being transferred back to bourbon barrels… I thought it was awesome especially at about $50. The Nadurra which is their cask strength was very good too. I also really like the balvenie portwood.

QOTD: umm they kinda sucked when he left for a while in the 90s so nope they’ll crash when he retires… btw ipod sucks creative zen rocks it for half the price

Great show! Awesome guest and great interaction. Ive been interested in scotch and I think the next time Im out on the town I might but a drink….maybe a bottle somewhere down the line. Thank you for opening up new doors for us once again! QOTD: Im only going to say yes because it would be horrible for the economy to lose all those jobs. I personally hate Apple and refuse to use their products. I dont like how they run their products and I absolutely HATE their commercials. They make Macs look like trendy crap and youre an idiot if you dont buy it. That right there = no sale for me.

I’ll agree that single malt scotch is just way too expensive to drink every day. However, there is one particular brand that is very good and won’t cost you an arm and a leg: Lismore.

It’s not the best, but it’s way better than your every day drinking blended scotch. I believe it is a speyside malt and it is quite good. Not too smoky or peaty. Give it a try.

To tried the water trick with some Laphroaig and that was the first time I began to appreciate it.

Where are all the bourbon and Scotch Shows. This was one of my favorite shows of all time. (drinking a bottle of wine then some Yamazaki whisky will mess you up. I would love to see some different tastings, rootbeer, whisky and even cola. Branch out, I was thinking that another person might do a good whisky tasking, but it is your style that I love. That is hard for me to say since I am kind of anti-NJ. It took me 6 months to come back and really watch your show when I saw you were such a Jets fan.

Guys, You wouldn’t nose wine in those snifters…why scotch. You need a sherry copita or a Glencairn type glass.

We don’t review wine, I wouldn’t expect you to review scotch and do it justice. The use of these glasses belies the lack of professionalism vis a vis single malt tasting and nosing.

  • Dude, you should have bought a Glencairn Glass from us before you tackled the whole scotch issue. Scotch enthusiasts are as serious about their beverage as wine enthusiasts are about wine. When it comes to Scotch, you HAVE to use a nosing glass. The tumblers you used are fine for mixed drinks but they’re worthless for comparing scotch.

You just don’t get the nuances in those kinds of glasses.

  • GR DAMN! Awesome episode.

QOTD: Apple will not survive, what happened to apple during the scully days. Come on! Unless Mr Jobs cryogenically freezes himself. That would be cool, take some stem sells, take some dna, take some sperm and if we create another steve jobs nowish maybe by the time he is really ready to retire steve jobs two will be already in the company moving his way up and will save Apple. It’s possible, probably won’t happen but its possible.

Just discovered your website this week, and I am addicted. I completely agree, Gary: Laphroaig rocks…love that peaty goodness. (How could you not? It's such a complex and interesting flavor/smell. Nothing else like it…except taking a handful of peat and shoving it up your nose, I suppose.) Keep the episodes on spirits (with the amazing guests) coming — I'm learning so much from them. You HAVE to do one on bourbon. There are some great high-end bourbons out there — it's not all Maker's Mark and Wild Turkey. DO IT, GARY!!!

It didn’t look like Matt had ever had a Scotch before. The faces and grimaces were pretty shocking. But a great show none the less!
