I had the Balvenie 15 – Year and was underwhelmed. Very smooth, but not much character to get excited about. The 10-Year Macallan on the other hand was half the price and much tastier:

Great show, I love Scotch! The Laphroag and Talisker (not the one you guys tried) are 2 of my favorite brands. The Balvenies are just too sherrified for me, as are a lot of the highlands.

QOTD: Yes, apple will survive, unless they mismanage it horribly like they did the last time Steve left.

Great show. Perfect flow. Interesting. Although I’m still not ready for Scotch.

QOTD: I’m a big Apple fan but I don’t know. Who knows?!

    Keep up the good work!!

Great show. I love scotch. So far Chivas Regal is my fave (it’s in my price range!). I will have to try these out now.

QOTD: I should admit first that I am a big Mac Nerd, but honestly I do not know what Apple will do after Jobs. He has certainly been a huge marketing force for the company. We are finally seeing Apple products taking a larger market share away from Microsoft. I have to admit though, that Steve Jobs has been a big force for marketing products that are way ahead of their time to a market that really does not need the product, and people still scoop it up! I think that he has made a good market brand (with superb marketing strategies), but I honestly do not see it being as successful once he leaves.

Interesting show, not really into scotch, but nice to mix things up.

QOTD: Apple will pull through. It might dip at first, but it will be fine.

I’m not a scotch drinker but still…great show! Variety is the key. What about a brandy show? Thst would make me happy.

The Laphroaig is a long-time fave of mine. And if I feel like jumping into a peat bog, there’s one even peatier, Lagavulin.

Judging from friends and critics alike, I might be the only defender of Balvenie on the planet. But it’s the Doublewood I like.

I think Talisker is sold sometimes in a sampler with Oban, Glenkinchie, and some other Scotches. The plain vanilla Talisker didn’t do much for me. Guess I need to find some 175, huh?

Now everyone will be after you to do other hard liquor tastings! I’d like to see you take on some Bourbons and possibly gins, but I’m not sure if I’d be down with frequent tastings of products from the far side of the 40 proof divide.

Will Apple survive Jobs’ eventual departure? If Jobs vision extends far enough past then to see them through, and if Microsoft continues to falter, sure.

Man great show… this makes me want to go out and taste scotch! (of course i’m still underage so that will have to wait)

QOTD: I feel Apple will survive Steve Jobs, however I feel it will not be near as good. By good I mean maybe as innovative in products or marketing.

ok good show. although i’ve *never* heard of adding 2x the amount of water to a single malt, so i’m not sure what that’s about.

one other thing… the comparison of laphroaig to a fruit bomb, and talisker to an old world wine. i’d almost reverse that comparison. talisker delivers those wonderfully smooth flavors, always permutating, always suprising, but it’s so integrated and so well presented it’s almost polished and fresh. laphroaig is more of the old world, take no prisoners, f-u if you don’t like it delivery of it’s array of amazing flavors, everyone be damned attitude.

but vayniacs if you’ve never tried a scotch, and aren’t willing to roll in at some of the higher price points, you can absolutely score with the entry expressions of laphroaig and talisker – the 10 years. both are amazing, amazing malts, and it’d be a great change of pace to go and seek them out.

    qotd: geh. whatever.

QOTD: (Great question, btw) Absolutely! Here’s why:

    1. Steve Jobs is no fool. He’s already grooming his replacement(s) (Ive, Oppenheimer, Cook).

    2. He’s put together a phenomenal team (mentioned above) that can work together to produce great products, leaving the company in good hands.

    3. Investors will be scared of the transition and Apple’s stock may drop at first, but it will recover with Apple’s continued success.

    4. Apple will continue to be Apple, just a different guy giving the keynote presentations at Apple Expos and conventions.

Great show again, Gary and Mott. I like blended scotch, and have tried single malts, but don’t like the horse pee taste. (sorry, but that’s my opinion) Blended like Johnny Walker Blue label is my choice. I belonged to the Scotch of the month club for 2 years, but since they are 100% single malts from very small distilleries – I gave it up. Still have one bottle from 1999!

The guest was a nice laid back guy, good to contrast Gary’s Professional Wrestling style talking. haha. Which I love!

You should get the Mad Money guy into a scotch show – he’d be a hoot!

QOTD: Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates and Scott McNealy are the companies, it was their personalities, their genius (or in the case of Gates, his mother’s). As they leave, the companies will go adrift within 5 years. Within 8 years they will be like the banks, energy companies of the past 10 years dying by mis-leading CEOs. Watch this space. Buy HP, Buy IBM, ditch these other stocks! There I said it, and it is forever on the internet.

Great show. I love wltv every day – but today’s show made my day extra bright. It would be great if you could do more shows about it. In some ways I think scotch drinkers have a worse reputation than wine people. Show the world we aren’t all bad.

I have a couple older single malts I’d be happy to break open for you next time you are out in CA.

    Keep the awesome coming.

This was one of the best shows I’ve seen Gary do. Matt and Gary had a very good banter and have complimentary but different energies that I feel really brought a depth. Thoroughly entertaining and a nice change. Kudos.

OMG, Gary, you are so freaking awesome! I can’t believe you did a scotch episode!!!! Just when I thought you were the god of all wine, now you’ve broken into the scotch world. So cool!

I must say, this episode would have been PERFECT if you had included Lagavulin in your line up which, in my opinion, is the ultimate single malt from the islands (closely followed by Caol Ila). But in any case, it totally made me want to have some scotch!

I have always heard that you should do only a minimal amount of water in your scotch….like just a sprinkle, almost. It does bring out the flavors without diluting them.

    In any case, FABULOUS SHOW!!!!!

WOW. This was a GREAT episode! I don’t drink Scotch, but I think I’m going to give it a try now. Matt was a perfect compliment to you, Gary.

QOTD: Hard to say, but I think that Apple will always be cutting edge.
