I had the Balvenie 15 – Year and was underwhelmed. Very smooth, but not much character to get excited about. The 10-Year Macallan on the other hand was half the price and much tastier:

    Gary,
Next time you try your single malts and want to add water, I recommend you do this. Pour a glass neat and pour a second glass with 2 to 3 **drops** of water. Give each a “sniffy sniff” and a taste. Notice how the drops of water really open up all of the wonderful smells in the scotch and expand the taste without too much dilution. I’m a new fan, currently studying for the NY bar and use your shows as breaks between long study session. Thanks!

Awesome episode. Next time I’d love to see you try The Glenlivet Nadurra aged 16 years Cask strength 59.2% a/v. And now I’m going to have to go out and see if I can even find a bottle of the 175 anniversary edition Talisker as I’ve had the aged 10 years version and thought it was rather good. I’d love to see more of these every couple of weeks. Not to often or you may not have a liver for long 😉

  • Another awesome show Gary. I’m really liking your guests lately.

QOTD: Apple will survive, it won’t be as sexy without Steve but it’ll keep going. Other companies need a Steve Jobs to get them out of the toilet. Here’s to the idea of innovative leadership. (sippy sip)

While I look forward to GV’s wine reviews, this review struck me as amateurish. Neither Gary nor the guest knew more about the topic than any other casual Scotch drinker. Frankly, I don’t see the point, other than mixing it up, to degrade what is an otherwise informative show. If GV ventures into a topic he knows little about, at least invite a guest who knows what he’s talking about.

Loved the show Gary, glad to see you covering scotch, a drink very near to my heart. Since you’re a fan of heavily peated whiskies, I’d love to see you give Ardbeg a try.

  • I think this is more than enough scotch when your guest tells me how often he has been drunk. Though in general not many people are going to use single malt scotches at these prices to get their drunk on. When you add in cigars that is the end for me.

I’ve been watching for a while, but never left a comment until now (sorry!) but I have to say, this was one of my favorite shows. More scotch shows would be amazing.

QOTD: I think Apple will survive because while Steve Jobs might be a driving force, I am sure that he did not think of all of Apple’s current products. It is just too big of a company for that.

Good show guys! I’ve been a big fan of Laphroaig for years now even though the first time I tasted it I couldn’t take the peat. But my friend loved it and at his place we always had a glass, and I came around to it.
QOTD: Apple didn’t do so well when Steve was away the last time, it’s a hard question to think about because I just love my Mac (and my iPod and the iPhone) and really don’t like it when I have to use a PC. So Steve has to be around until they can download whatever it is that he does to disc.

  • QOTD: Look at what happened to Apple when Jobs stepped away. Right into the crapper. Mr. Man comes back, and poof, iTunes. I hope his retirement is far, far away.

Oh, and Bill. Lighten the heck up bud. It’s just a video blog and Gary is having fun. Isn’t that the point?

that was an AMAZING episode. i really enjoyed seeing matt there being the side-kick “boy wonder” in knowing about scotch. it was really enjoyable and the secret is, even though i’ve gone to wine tastings when i was 11, i really enjoyed trying scotch at 17 a couple of times because of the adventure in flavor.

    this was enjoyable!

QOTD: Apple would survive without Steve Jobs, BUT I don’t believe that they would be able to be new and inventive in the tech world as they are now. It would probably be just filled with little fixes…nothing evolutionary.

QOTD: If Jobs leaves suddenly Apple will wither, if he plans to train a successor or two it could survive but I don’t think he will and so ultimately they are toast, but that could easily be 20 years from now.

  • OK, First: Great show guys, truly great. I have not been a scotch drinker primarily because of the things you talked about on the show, I feel it is way too bold for my taste and I get a sense of a mule kick out of drinking scotch, and no, I don’t remember watering it down if ever i drank a glass or two. Now this being and Inspiring show – wine library – I will definitely try at least the Talisker which is available here, let’s hope I can get through the ordeal with a new sense of enlightenment.( not a headache )

QOTD: Yes, I think it will, progress is progress after all and he will still have a seat in the board for some time after, so many ideas and directions would have to at least be presented to him in some sort. Remember when Woz left and people thought what if, well there is your answer.People with ideas never retire or die, visionaries are great always, even beyond the grave.

  • Outstandig Episode Gary and liked the Single Malt Theme a lot. Also a big hand for your sympathic guest. Was a good match.
QOTD: pooh, difficult to answer. needs a deeper look then i have. But i guess, the story will go on, even without steven jobs.

  • GV & Matt – Excellent show, Scotch is something that is near and dear to my heart. Would love to see more, maybe not every 2 weeks, but maybe monthly…

QOTD – Steve Jobbs has created iSteve, which will run Apple, and no one will ever know the difference… they will keep reshaping the tech world one great product at a time

    Hey Gary,

Thanks for branching out and trying some Scotch. Good show – a lot of us wine drinkers also enjoy Scotch whiskey and other trappings of “the good life” – like cigars. Know you won’t be doing any cigar tastings any time soon.

Just like Ron Burgundy said “Scotch, Scotch, Scotch, I love Scotch, Scotch in my belly, Scotch, Scotch, Scotch”.

    Have a great day.

Wow! Fantastic episode. I’ve so been looking forward to this.

I’m currently taking your approach to exploring and experiencing wine and applying it to single malt scotch instead. Each time I buy 2 new bottles I pick a scotch I’ve never had before. So far I’ve tried The Macallan Fine Oak 12yo, The Glenlivet 15yo, Laphroaig Quarter Cask & Ardbeg Uigeadail.

My current 2 bottles are Lagavulin 16yo and Bowmore 12yo. I’m not that big of a drinker so it takes me a while to go through 2 bottles 🙂

QOTD: No idea. Probably. Who cares ? 😉

  • Concerning the show, I should try more scotch and whiskey, as I’m in Ireland for work and my family is in Switzerland each time I come back I bring a new whiskey and we taste it together so that each one can tell if they like it or not.

Concerning Steve, he’s such an iconic figure I don’t think he will ever retire, or if he does the price of the apple action will loose easily half it’s value or more.

It was fun watching you two sit there and get ripped, you know you got buzzed.
QOTD- Jobs… Meh, I’m a Windows guy and I don’t really care either way… But the i-phone is frikkin’ awesome.

Fantastic Show, Matt, GV, and Mott! I’ve been waiting for this one, and I finally got it!

QOTD: Steve can’t possibly be doing it all… There must be at least 10-20 peeps at app. that could replace him.
