I had the Balvenie 15 – Year and was underwhelmed. Very smooth, but not much character to get excited about. The 10-Year Macallan on the other hand was half the price and much tastier:

Now being a huge scotch lover this has to be the best WLTV ever, hands down. You should really look into doing more of these since you dig scotch and there are so many out there to try. Plus I am sure the buzz is much better than from the wine. Maybe next time my fav, Oban, will get a shot since you like the peaty types.

QOTD: It will survive, but its hard to tell if it will thrive or not. All depends on who the new guy is.

Good show. I did learn a little about Scotch. Have you ever considered doing a Bourbon show?

Great show. I like that you mixed it up and covered another topic that interests me as much as wine. I enjoy single malts, especially Laphroaig, which I was happy to see you give some props. I was able to taste several single malts on a trip to Scotland a while back, and this brought back some find memories of that great trip. I wouldn’t mind seeing the occasional episode on other noble spirits. Strong work, Gary!

    Gary,

Thanks so much for doing a scotch show, I’ve been waiting a long time for one of these. I was so pleased you did the Laphroaig, a friend of mine recently visited Scotland and brought be back a bottle of the 10 year old you drank. It was awesome to drink it with you guys, it was definitley a forrest fire in my mouth.

QOTD: I think they will be fine post Jobs. Surely there are other people there coming up with the great ideas they go with and its not entirely him. Maybe they need somebody like Gary to take over when he’s finished!?

    Great Show Single Malts!!
I was drinking Scotch before I got into wine, I have had the scotchs you tasted and many others. BTW, i drank Balvenie before all the changes to the brand, different age statements and woods for aging and the bottle shape, at one time Balvenie SMS hab the most distinctive bottle in all Scotchdom.
Your, future tastings must include Blends, there are some killer blends that will appeal to some vayniacs also, and pairings with food, especially chocolate!!

  • There was an article recently about that topic, and three years while he was gone the lowest revenue increase was 107% and the highest was greater then 300%… I wish I could find it so I could post the link. The stock will dip briefly but will have no problem making superior products.

Definitely more scotch shows sprinkled in… great episode. Next time how about some Macallan??? Maybe once a month? Would also love to see a big Australian Shiraz show as the new vintage comes out this fall

    Keep up the good work!

Scotch! What a great surprise! I was into Scotch before I was into wine. I do, however, follow Gary’s credo of trusting your own palate, and I definitely tend to like the more Sherry Oak-influenced Scotches such as the Balvenie–although I have not tasted the Balvenie 17yr. I usually drink the slightly more pedestrian Balvenie Doublewood. My favorite Scotches to date are the Macallan 18 and 21 year olds, as they are also aged in Sherry Oak casks and are just wonderful. I guess my palate leans more towards dark caramel and honey than peat and smoke. After viewing this episode of WLTV, however, I am very interested in sampling the Talisker 175! I am not a fan of the standard Talisker(s) but Gary’s description has sparked my curiosity. Finally, I think that Apple will not be the same without Jobs.

GV – Thanks for doing the Scotch Episode, and especially for tasting Laphroaig! Glad to see that it delivered.

    Couple interesting Laphroaig facts:

1 – Laphroaig was legally imported during prohibition for either medical use or disinfectant, because no one expected anyone to drink it!

2 – I can confirm Matt’s suggestion that this is not a good scotch to drink on a date. My wife will not sit anywhere near me when I drink Laphroaig!

Great show, wish you would do more liquor shows. Love to hear what you think of the Crown XR and other liquors like it.

QOTD: Apple will go right into the toilet just like before without Jobs, unless he can find someone to train to think like he does before he steps away. I just hope he steps away on own his time and not because of some illness.

An interesting show. I am not nor will I ever be a serious Scotch drinker. But it was very interesting to learn the differences.

QOTD – I do not think Apple will survive in the present form without Mr. Jobs.

I am new to the vlog…having just signed up last week (after viewing you on Mahalo). I’ve already seen 18 episodes though. Anyhow, I love that you are doing Scotch (my fav, after wine of course) too! I would highly recommend the Balvenie Doublewood or Dalwhinnie. Those are the two that I habitually keep on my shelf, with one or two other single malts that I’m trying for the first time.

    Yes, Apple will survive Steve.

  • GV – Nice to see the scotch branch-out. QOTD – Fairly ignorant on this one – but maybe the personality of the company would change.

Awesome show Gary. Also just finished watching the linked up match classic stuff with names like The body, Gorrilla, and Mean Gene. Apple will be ok without Jobs

  • Pete

    great show.

re. QOTD – Apple’s survival post-Jobs is entirely dependent on the future leader. The entire culture at apple is command and control. When Jobs left the first time it lost its way pretty quickly. When (and I hope it is a long time away) he leaves this time it will have to be run by a pretty amazing substitute or it will fade away. OR, Steve will have to start creating an organization that is designed to live without him. Thus far, he has seemed very uninterested in this.

My best guess, it will quickly fade but won’t die post Steve.

Love the scotch discussion. Problem with Scotch for me is that the cost of entry is just too high to do frequent samplings from different providers at home and too many bars stock the 3 standards. There are places that have deeper, more varied lists but they are few and far between.

QOTD: Not likely – they tanked when he was gone and look what they’ve done since he came back. Track record speaks for itself.

Fun show today! You really should get into some single cask bottlings, where each barrel is different from the next. I love the infinite variations in scotch!
