It’s a Sauternes and a Barsac. Even if it’s technically from Barsac, you can call it Sauternes (Check the label).

man it looked like that bottle of Cos was going to fall over. QOTD: so far only one bottle of sauternes and while it was good there was a lot of what I thought was volatile acidity on the nose. smelled just like nail polish remover.

Nice episode — love your classy spit bucket! 🙂

QOTD: I don’t have a favorite sauterne, but honestly I’ve never had one I didn’t like. They’re an occasional treat for us, and well worth every penny.

QOTD – I had a Climens a couple of years ago but can’t remember the vintage. It was really eye opening. Thanks for the show today. I plan to buy at least one 05 Cos Dâ??estournel. It’s going for $310 a pop here in the DC area. But it was the 97 Cos Dâ??estournel that made me understand what Bordeaux was all about. I’ve had most vintages since so I’ll go into debt for the 05 if I have to!

I was hoping you would have a show where you tasted some of your 101 picks. This one was great! I’ll try a Sauternes soon.

QOTD: I don’t have a favorite sauternes yet, as I’m still in research mode…

Loved Lafaurie-Peyraguey 03, had it after some profiteroles, which may be an odd choice because of the richness of the dessert, but i thought it actually worked because i got a surprising dark chocolate note on the finish which was fantastic. Very complex and a little on the lighter side, i loved it. Hope to try the Doisy soon!

    Great show Gary!

    He’s Baaack!

QOTD: Never had one and, basically, just not into dessert wines. But, again, you may change my mind.

I bought a 375ml bottle of the ’05 Doisy-Védrines back in February, just because it seemed like a solid bottle of dessert wine for a good price, and at the time I had not had any Sauternes. Well, I didn’t drink it and when the book came out, buy was I glad I didn’t. I’ll be buying some more of the ’05 so I can go ahead and drink the bottle I have and I’ll probably even be pre-ordering on the ’07 in the near future.
If I may recommend some other great Sauternes, ’05 Chateau Coutet rocked my face off earlier this year in a Bordeaux tasting, and that runs about $50/bottle. Also, the 2004 Lieutenant de Sigalas is maybe the best value in Sauternes I’ve ever had. It brings straight balance, elegance, and thunder for $20 for a full bottle. That wine is already beginning to turn dark. Which mens its a Sauternes to drink now, and one where you shouldn’t have to wait for half your life to enjoy it in its fullest.

    QOTD: 2003 Château Rieussec. Yummy.
