EP 515 1969 Vintage Sauternes

Gary V loved the 2005 vintage, now let’s see how the 1969 Chateau Doisy Vedrines is holding up.

Wines tasted in this episode:

the three best were the 2001 Lafaurie Peraguey (94 pts) – loaded with botrytis – the 2007 Climens (94 pts) – simply stellar and the 1989 Yquem (96+ pts) which was just simply too pure, too perfect. I would prefer the Climens and LP as the Yquem was so pure it reminded me of a chemical out of the chemistry lab – almost industrial levels of purity.

QOTD: Not a huge fan of dessert wines, but I do like me some Sauternes when they are on the slightly dryer side and show some petrol notes with that indescribable, slightly bitter, pungent, overripe-pineapple, orange zest-meets peach pit flavor profile mixed with oxidized natural honey. For me acidity is the absolute make-or-break key to a good dessert wine; the acidity MUST be fresh and vibrant enough to balance out the alcohol and high sugar to keep it from tasting like just another sugary beverage.

No longer possessing youthful crispness? Softer around the mid-section? Still have good legs? A classic that may be past its prime? Questions abound. But enough about Brett Favre.

After seeing #514, I bought some ’05 D-V. Sounds like a winner. I won’t wait 39 years to try it, though. How did the 2007 taste? It’s supposed to be a great vintage for sauternes.

QOTD: In order for us to comply, WL needs to offer the ’69 D-V. With free shipping, of course.

QOTD – I will take your word for it that it is wonderful.
As a Packer fan I can’t wish Brett Favre bad luck, but I question whether he can make a big difference to the Jets this year. How fast will the fans turn on him if he they are not winning most of their games?

Not surprised the ’69 is so youthful if it was a good vintage. I love the spotlight on Sauternes. You are so right to spotlight this under appreciated type of wine. When are you going to do some Loire stickies?

  • Another great episode on location! Like someone mentioned earlier, I don’t think the French “get” the QOTD; they just say something and expect a reply from the audience…oh well, it’s enjoyable anyway! Week 2 Gary…week 2….

As a really big bourbon lover, I think it would bring some serious thunder if you did a bourbon/American whiskey episode since you did that single malt episode. PLEASE!!

Some suggestions are Baker’s 7 year, Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig 12 year, Jack Daniels Single Barrel, Maker’s Mark!

    Hey Gary,

Great show, but a bit difficult understanding your guest. I’m sure he had some interesting input, but couldn’t quite catch it all. BTW, did you think he said “diseased” wine and not sweet dessert wine? Anyway, first game of the Dolphins and Jets will be interesting with Chad on the other side. Go Dolphins. Thanks again, Gary.

I’ve recently had the luck of finally getting to try a Sauternes. It was a 2003 Chateau Rieussec Sauternes and it was pretty good stuff. I guess the French really know how to make the most of fungus.

Love sauternes – and they all taste pretty good old. Not as much variation as old red wines. Something you can count on.

I agree with a comment made by another Vayniac on this episode that it would be neat to let the host of a winery/chateau tell the viewers what the oldest vintage is that they have stored in their cellars. It would give us an idea of the expected longevity of a particular wine. And who knows, they just might even pull out a 75 to 100-year old bottle, blow the dust off of it, uncork it and you’ll both taste it. Then we’ll get to hear you proclaiming things like “Wow, this wine is FABULOUS and I’d rate it 120 points!” Hey, I know that’s a bit crazy, but you could see if they’ll go for it. You might uncork some serious thunder that we could all experience vicariously while watching.
