I’m really impressed that he doesn’t have a chard by the glass on there. Good for him.

    Great show and concept.

I fully appreciate that you have to do you, but it would be easier to follow if you slowed down a bit and did not lead the guest. Let them provide their personality and views without just agreeing with what you have offered.

QOTD: I recently was offered a Chenin Blanc to replace a Riesling choice that was enjoyable.

Fabulous show! Loved the on-site banter but I did get a little dizzy…nice job for the first time using your new toy. Never new they produced wine in Morroco – love to learn more!

QOTD: Have to agree with the AdamBomb Hondarribi Zuri – check it out it is well worth it!

How good is E.Guigal Cotes du Rhone 2003?

How long should you let it age?

    Where can you purchase some?

    How much?

  • Loved the show – Will have to check out Public next time I am in the NYC. The show was a bit “Saving Private Ryan” with the camera, but it added to GV’s energy.

Interesting show. The camera work needs some improvement, but I like the idea. It would need some editing though, like a high resolution still image of the menu to put up while you comment.

QOTD: I think the trend might come back to italian whites, like Gavi, although with the economy tanking, a cheaper S American white, like Torrontes is poised to come up strong.

I appreciate the fact that GV is working hard to keep it fresh and exciting, by trying out new ideas. I suppose it all comes down to why you watch the show in the first place. If it’s to see GV interact and riff, then sure, this format is fine and a lot of fun. However, for me, it seemed more like a commercial for PUBLIC, with very little wine information. So, now we know that PUBLIC has a good wine list. I’m guessing that 90% of the of audiance couldn’t care less about that fact. I suppose I’ll have to see how this format shapes up, but for now I’m a bit dubious. Otherwise, thanks for the effort.

i think that this is a great idea. i understand that you are in NY a lot, but the other big cities… DC boston, LA, chicago…. would be great too. no tasting? oh well.
QOTD: it is kinda dorky or coincidental because WS and everybody else is going goo goo gaga over italian whites, but they have been doing it for me this summer. nothing specific, but i have been getting some good value stuff. also, the classic, champagne. i told myself 6 months ago that everyone needs to drink more champers. it is so good and not just for the BDays. mine is sunday, and i might have to pop a bottle in the cellar

Definitely a fun show, not as solid as when you are in the office. Still I like this format and would enjoy seeing it every now and then. The camera shake and the way the list was presented bothered me a little. Great guest, great atmosphere. Another thing, instead of just asking what they would recommend, how about drinking a little and talking about it. That would really have put this show over the top for me. Still, all my support to you Gary! Really enjoy the program as always.

QOTD: They make this stuff in white? 🙂

Great idea, which I hope catches on.

My only criticism was the poor camera work; I realize that it’s a handheld, but the constant switching from the wine list, then to you, and then to Jesse was distracting, and frankly annoying.

May I suggest that you skip showing the wine list, which we can’t read anyway, and focus on you and your interlocutor in a wider angle shot, addressing each other, instead of having each of you in closeup addressing the camera.

But, as I said, a GREAT idea, which I hope you’ll continue — and very useful especially to those of us who live in the Big Apple.

  • QOTD (for the future):: I’m gonna make an early prediction for next summer. I’m gonna take a eral risk, and straight up bet $250 — to go to a charity of Gary’s choice (hopefully he sees this) if I am wrong — that by the end of the summer 2009 MOSCHOFILERO from GREECE will have made a sincere impact on the wine drinking public and be a serious contender in the world of summer whites.

    Gonna take me on?!

  • Great ep! The restaurant looks great. Maybe I’ll check it out when I’m in Manhattan in October. I’m glad you linked up the restaurant’s site (since it had one), but how about linking up a PDF of the wine list in its full glory? That would be a perfect compliment to this sort of episode.

Great idea to review restaurant wine lists! Some of it was going a bit too fast for me, though, when you were zipping through names and trends that I’m only vaguely familiar with. Some of these trends might lead to shows in your more usual format (e.g., Rieslings and Gewurz’s from Australia and New Zealand). I’d like more reviews of restaurant wine lists. (Now, if you could just do something about the prices that restaurants charge for wines ….)

I was going to make a suggestion that you link a pdf file of the menu so we can read along with you as you talk about the wine list, but I see you can get to that wine list with the Public link. I wish I had known that BEFORE watching., but still an interesting show – always extending the product line!

I agree, the ‘NEW WHITE IS ROSE’

i have been residing in France for the past year and have never consumed so many wonderful rose wines from the provence…The States need to step up and really appreciate what this varietal has to offer.

These varietals are also my favored “Chenin Blanc & Cabernet Franc”….

QOTD: Argentina’s Torrontés, cross of Muscat of Alexandria and the Mission Grape of Galacia….great value. Specially the high altitude vineyards. Due to the very dry air and the altitude, the daily thermal amplitude is extreme in the northern region of Argentina. These conditions are ideal to develop intense, very aromatic and complex flavours. “COLOME Vineyards” is my favored (biodynamic). Growing at 7217 ft to 9891 ft, the highest vineyards in the world.

Loved the new show idea. I liked the one comment on the price of the wines on the list. You should incorporate that into the comments at the end. The value to list price.
