Hey gary, not sure if yoiu even read comments from old episodes, but I just tried a wine from “Costieres De Nimes” region, it’s called Chateau Mourgues de Gres, les galets rouges. and i’m blow’n away with it’s quality, flavour, and overall elegance. oh my, this wine is so beautiful…and it was only $14 (canadian). i started trying all kinds of wines from Rhone and southern France based on your passion for them. yep, once you taste them it’s hard to explain them, i think they are so good and sometimes beautiful that words can’t even properly describe them…i guess that how wine should make you feel.

Is your hair getting shorter? ugh? ghez. Got to let you know. smile.

    Good show. thanks.
Had some Italian reds tonight with friends – two were really petrol in the nose. All were good with cheeses. Come to Cary, NC and the Ciao wine bar. Great Italian wines. Great cheeses.
QOTD: this wine, I gotta get some. Jets… who cares.

love the decanting notes /suggestion. most peps I know totally screw wine up by not giving enough air… wine is completley different when drank correctly

  • QOTD: GARY, I’ve been waiting for you to ask this question all YEAR!!! First, I’ve never had a wine from that area, but I will be looking for this one tomorrow!

Secondly, my prediction, Matt Cassel does just enough to manage the game and get the Patriots past the Jets, 17-10 (Cotchery catches a bomb in the 3rd quarter for NY’s only trip to the end zone, while Moss and Welker both catch TD passes from Cassel).

I’ve been lurking for a while but decided today would be a good day to say ‘sup.

I think the Jets are going to win, but it’s going to be a squeaker. We’ll go 14-10.

As for the wine, I’ll be looking for it.

I love the add-on at the end…the cellar information/decanting info and food pairing comments…right on.

QOTD: I can’t really answer for the Jets prediction, as a Seahawks fan my only concern is that they don’t embarrass themselves for a second weekend in a row.

  • Classic WLTV – easy going host, inexpensive wine from an under-recognized region, Jets blather…Love it. Your comment about the Parker-effect on pricing is telling. I think you’re saying “Ignore the marketing, taste the wine.” I’m with you.

QOTD: Part 1) Great region, lots of value priced reds and rosés. Time will tell if they are ageable and can be included in the same sentence with higher end Rhones.
Part 2) The game will be interupted when Farve has a heart attack or stroke because he’s too OLD!! Maybe he’ll just have a prostate problem.

QOTD 1): jets score? I don t know… I don t know much about american football, i m more of what you would call a “soccer” fan.

QOTD 2): the future of costieres de nimes (pronounced “costi air” de “neem”): I believe it will stay in the shadows of cotes du rhone and langedoc. I m French and have a lot of french wines but have never tasted a costieres… It s an area that produces wine, but is not considered a “good wine” producing area. It s all about marketing and press as you pointed out !

Thanks for adding a DOC to my “to drink list”! Great show !

Jets 24 Patriots 10 They’ll fall apart without Brady.

The future of this area depends on how they proceed with marketing. Look at Spain, they were for a long time a value driven with outstanding quality for the dollar, and now that everyone knows the wines, they’ve jumped up in price. This region could go the same way if they market effectively, but that’s not something the French have done well historically……

  • Hearing a lot more from new regions like this, with Asian market open it’s even harder to find bordeaux and burgundian wines. There prices will increase drastically in next 5-10 years.
Favre will go down, I like the jets until they signed him. Sorry GV but no chance of winning this, Cassel is gonna shock us. I swear I’m not a fans of the Pats and would like to see them lose, especially cause Bllichick is a scumbag!

Excellent idea there at the end. Too many wines are consumed too young or right after opening the bottle. Great job, keep it up!

Can we stop please stop talking about Parker. Parker has done more damage to wine than phylloxera. The idiots he employees perpetuate his legacy of terroir destruction. Boycott Parker- and Wine Advocate-rated wines!

Gary you have to try the Mas Carlot syrah-greanche. Simple unassuming label. Stunning northern Rhone taste (smoky, meat blood, autumn leaves burning). Its been my $12 table wine for about 3 months now and people who come to my house and want to taste a different wine are blown away by this. It brings the thunder in a QPR powerbomb through a table from outside the ring onto the announcers booth. I will definitely try the Hippolyte!

GV it was so good to see the show again…I don’t have internet and have been having WLTV withdrawl! But on the brighter side, I’ve been drinking some damn fine wine! And seriously being in France is great- I have tried wine from so many different new appellations. You’d be so proud!

    QOTD: Pats- 14 Jets- 12
And I think the bargains from languedoc, corbieres, and other appellations in the South of France (that bring some bang for your buck) will become more and more valued.

  • QOTD: I really don’t care about football, but my wife would kill me if I didn’t say the Patriots will win (she delayed telling me she went into labor the night of the Super Bowl until the 4th quarter). Sorry, Gary.

Great episode, really great. Thank you. As for the wine, won’t you have the same affect as Parker? I’ve got things in our wine chiller/cellar here going on 3-5 years. I think patience in wine drinking is way undermentioned or undervalued.

  • Did the Jets get the kicker straight!

    Jets 21-17

But the Pats QB scares me. Could we end up with a QB controversy when Brady comes back next year? I hope not. That would just BOOST Belichek’s ego higher still.

You really made us want to go get that wine 😉

    Mark

P.S. For old times sake, can we get an EXPLOSIVE “Hello everybody, and welcome to…” – even if it’s after the subdued one?

  • QOTD: I think well I should say…I hope that the wines from corbieres may be the latest and greatest in the wine world within the next 5 years, buy now while they are still at a great price point.

I think Cassel is going to surprise the hell out of people and bring some thunder to to Patriots. Even though he hasent started a game in over 9 years I think he will do just fine, we still have alot of great players.

There is no “I” in team.

    Hey Vay-ner-chuk,

Got the secret pack from FedEx today. Wow! Opus One, 1961 Petrus, 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay AND the 2006 Charles Shaw ‘Souvenir’ Blanc.

    You really shouldn’t have!

Seriously, it arrived today and you just went 4-for-4 with a dinger and three rbi. Well done, my Russian friend.

The owner of Deep Creek Cellars in Friendsville, MD., Paul Roberts, clued me in to wines from ‘Costieres de Nimes’ some time ago. I bought a case of one in particular, the 2004 Chateau Grande Cassagne “G.S.”. A blend of grenache and syrah (hence the ‘G.S.’), he claimed it was the greatest bargain in the history of French wines. I don’t know about that, but the case was under $100 and it is quite quaffable. I’d bring a few along on the
Thunder Cruise’ but I didn’t get the freebie invite! Fix! Fix!! Fix!!!

    Sunday’s final from the ‘Murderlands’:

    New England 18
    New York Jets 4

It has something to do with their wins from 2007, but I can’t figure out what. No matter!

“Meet the Jets, greet the Jets, step right up and beat the Jets…”

    Regards,

    Wayne Allen Root

Great! Many years ago, one of my first blown away experiences with Languedoc wine was Chateau de Gorgazaud from a little AOC called Minervois. Modestly priced then, and STILL well under $20. There seems to be no end to the value and quality which can be dug up all across the south of France. ‘Costy- air’ need not be costly at all, but beware! As recently as a couple years ago, if you held the Lang-Rouss. region alone, it would still be the world’s third, or fourth largest wine producer. (That translates as ALOT of bulk quality/bad juice, friends, much for blending, distilling, etc.) Good, great, AND inexpensive wines are widely available, but the better they are, the smaller that specific production probably is. Get aquainted with who’s doing what, whether a Domaine/Chateau, Biodynamic grower, or brokers/importers. When you become familiar with a name like Kacher, K. Lynch, Kysela Pere e Fils, or Pasternak, etc. you begin to know their quality ranges. Also, live to realistic expectations. Even when a 12 dollar wine gets over 90 points, it will NEVER be what a 30, or 130 dollar wine with the same type score is. QOTD- Cheapish and value wines will prevail, but there has been a growing segment of finer produced product, priced accordingly. It will still be rare to see any wines that will break the bank.(Unless your banker’s name is Freddie Mac.) Enjoy a cheapie like Jaja de Jau, or Figaro, but indulge in a higher end Languedoc too. And with the skirt stake, have some olives and cheese.I humbly disagree about the cellaring, tho – drink NOW. 1. 2. 3, GO.

Thanks for introducing us to great unknowns out there. I always like when you educate us about unknowns. It?s a win win for everybody and more importantly brings people together. Keep up the great news about under valued wines!

QOTD(1): Right now this wine is a steal and I believe it will remain that way for several years. Too many people stay with what they know and don?t enjoy new wines.
    QOTD(2): Jets outright!
