Classic East coast vs West coast personality contrasts: Mile-a-minute, raw, in-your-face, call ’em like I see ’em, no “holes” barred, “you tawkin to me?!?” take no prisoners “bubble yum gum paintball shot” vs calm, pensive, overeducated, painfully thought out, esoteric, eccentric (kooky), mellow, wet stones/minerality treehugger California. Not to say that one is better than the other, just observations.

Pacific Rim Riesling was one of the first wines I ever tried and loved, which then made me want to try other wines.

Completely agree that aromatics are essential to the full tasting experience. Not sure that the previewsmovie analogy is quite right… I prefer thinking of it as foreplay before sex. 😉

  • Never saw or heard of this unrelentingly wonderful wacko; that’s ThunderShow. I’d certainly put Paul Draper in that mythical top 5.

OMG! My favorite episode of ALL time for SO many reasons. First, Randal, Randal, Randal, why did you change from the 80’s & early to mid ninties Muscat Canelli Vin de Glaciere(100% Muscat Canelli) to Muscat Vin de Glaciere (about 40% Muscat Canelli)? The Muscat Canelli was THE BEST dessert wine that I have ever had without even a close second. Sweet, but not cloying, it was Ambroisia in a glass. I’ve been to the winery and asked, “Why the change? Canelli grapes too expensive to grow? Too difficult? The answers were…no, so Randal, WHY, WHY, WHY? Can you tell I LOVED this wine and I’m not even horribly big on dessert wines. Second, I would have watched this episode straight through if it had been 10 hours long. I wouldn’t have eaten, wouldn’t have answered the phone, gone to the bathroom, it was that good. Maybe I’ll watch the second part tomorrow 🙂

  • Just tasted through the whole Bonny Doon line and am really interested in the rest of the interview. Having had his wines for many years good to hear his take.

    Hi,

First time poster here – I thought the past two episodes (#563 and #562) have been the best in months. This one shines because we have a thoughtful guest who comfortably shares his divergent (as far as Gary is concerned) opinions: how often do we see that on WLTV? Also interesting was Randall’s stories on varietal selection and growing climate; I am looking forward to #564.

As an aside, I tasted the 2004 Le Cigare Volant, the 2005 Syrah le Pousseur, the 2006 Le Cigare Blanc, and the 2006 Ca’Del Solo in the spring. While I was not impressed with the Volant, I thought that the 2006 Ca was the best of the Gala. Well done!
