I realize this was recorded 5 years ago but, I hope to God GV has learned to STFU since then (and lay off the caffeine) when a guest, especially one of Randall’s caliber, is invited to an episode. I was hoping things would change for episode 2 with Randall, but it became painfully tiresome, annoying, and embarrassing to be honest, to have Randall continuously interrupted, and worse yet, to then have GV drone on about some tangent, then finally remember to shut up and get back to the interview.
2 things I live by:
– You can not learn anything new when you are doing the talking.
– A conversation between 2 people is NOT waiting for the other one to finish so you can say what you want to say (much less interrupting them constantly).

    I dug this show!

Randall is the smartest guest I think you’ve ever had. Only thing was bottles were obscuring his face for 3/4 of the episode and last episode GAH!

Gary Gary Gary….maybe you are inturrupting a bit too much, but hell it’s your show, and you are the primary reason that I watch.

QOTD: I’ve seen Bonny Doon as a market empire juice for a while now, and not really thought much about you for a while. That being said, I like what you had to offer, and I look forward to trying some of your wine.

  • Steve

Scott S (previous commenter), I think you nailed it. I wonder if Randal was thinking, “Man, I know I gotta do this for the marketing of the product, ‘cuz Gary V’s got a big audience, but this is hell on earth!”

  • Well this was the first time I’ve ever even heard of Bonny Doon.
    Sounds promising though!
Grahm is a very cool guy.

  • QOTD: I remember when we got Big House Red at our store in Lincoln about 6 years ago and we sold the heck out of it. Don’t know if I’ve had it since that initial shipment, but I thought it was good back then.

Nice wrap up of yesterday’s show. Randall is a very fun character.

QOTD: Unfortunately, this is the first time I hear about Bonny Doon, being from Québec, Canada. However, I shall seek them out and try them, no matter what…

    Cheers!

Jeez, I could imagine Randall asking himself below your breath in a Ross Perot kind of way, “Can I speak, can I speak?”

Great guest, great episodes. Always had a lot of respect for R.G.

QOTD: I started with a thought that Bonny Doon were “quirky” wines, but have more recently come to understand the seriousness behind the wines.

Awesome part II. I have just started on wine and got more interested after watching you show and also have started training my palate. Unfortunately I have never had any Bonny Doon wines but after looking at this show.. looking forward to try one of BD wines. I think it seems Randall is trying to get pretty classic and old age kind of wines in the market, which is good. These days many wines have started tasting similar kindish.. looking forward to verity.. Again great job… @dmistry

Awesome 2-part show GV… // Please get another awesome guest for next month…

QOTD: Here in Southern California, in the wine shops I frequent, I’ve always seen BD as a maker of serious, quality wines… I’ve only had a few of Randall’s wines (dessert, mostly), and they were quite nice…

P.S. Got my WS the other day and saw their ad… was wondering if you guys would mention it… RIGHT ON!

  • Wowwwww, Mr Grahm goes to the top of my favorite guests and a very nice gentleman on top of that.

Great, great show though I wish he could have finished his explanation of what they are doing regarding the labeling. Very articulate and someone I admire.

QOTD: When I introduced myself to Bonny Doon wines, i.e. the labels were way out there, I thought it was all marketing schtick until I told myself to try one and liked it quite a bit. I read many articles about Mr Grahm and realized he was very serious about his wines and it showed so right now I feel Bonny Doon are serious wines made by people who care about the land and their craft. Cheers to the BDs!

Nice finish to a great episode.

QOTD: I was unaware of the changes at BD but I’m sure it will be for the better. I loved your label art but as you said, “when it gets in the way of the wine…” Perhaps it can be summed up in the phrase, “Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it.” I admire your pursuit of the wine. Here’s to the cutting-edge side of Randall Grahm.

  • Great 2nd part!

Any good wines in Niagara Falls area? I’m heading there in December to capture the cold… I see wineries.. wonder if you would do one up there? or Buffalo or Jamestown (where Lucy Ball was born)… Surely a good wine can be found up there?

Come to Raleigh. Got the secret pack today. COOL FREE GIFT inside!!! thanks so much!

Bit a deer’s ass. hmm. gotta try that.

I agree with him – taste white wines chilled. I mean, who cares how it tastes warm? snicker.

QOTD: “everything I want, I google it” THAT is the quote of the day!! loved it. Bonny Doon? never heard of it. You, my friend, are a wine nerd, we love you. Come with Gary to NC! Raleigh has some serious growth in wineries.

I love Bonny Doon and it’s great to see their wines shine.
QOTD: I’ve been big on Bonny Doon for a long time now, have been to their tasting room a few times and have read a lot of what Randall has said and penned. I think they’re doing an amazing job but can see why some people would misinterpret their crazy, fun-loving style as just marketing (the website is off the hook!). But Randall is the real deal and he’s making wine to prove it.
Keep up the good work Randall and GV.

  • Absolutely fascinating! I would love to see more of the revolutionary, “old timer’s” on the show. Warren Winiarski, Mike Grgich, maybe Peter Mondavi (ok – not nearly as influential as Robert, God rest his soul…), heck – any of the real trail blazers! These winemaker shows are simply mezmerizing. I would say, Mr. Veeeee, that you need to chill a bit and let guests of this stature do more of the talking. Randall almost seemed politely annoyed, then resigned, that he could barely get a word in edgewise sometimes. That said, it still rocked and I would love to see more shows like this.

QOTD – I thought Bonny Doon had become a funky, smaller version of Gallo there for awhile. I knew that they still did some very small production wines that killed, but their focus seemed to be on gimmicky, drinkable wines that I personally didn’t care about. All of those cutesy names and labels turn me off. In the last several years, however, Randall has indeed changed his focus to producing only wines that he could really be proud of and selling off some of the labels that cheapened the Bonny Doon name just the way that Woodbridge diluted the Mondavi name. Mega kudos to Randall for that! He is also producing some wines here in Washington State, and hearing of his investments in the Columbia Valley makes me a happy, if not slightly buzzed, camper!

  • ScottEJ

Very Cool!! Love the *in-the-business* guests. Now I gotta go out and find me that Syrah, Albarino, and dessert wine.

QOTD: Sadly, Bonny Doon has been off my radar for some time. For no particular reason other than I’ve been expanding my palate with others that are *newer* to the market. You guys are great, though, and this episode reminded why that is.

I think I tried a Bonny Doone wine in the past, but it didn’t make me want to try it again.
    Smell it first!

This two-parter has been amazing! Randel, you are awesome! I hope there’s going to be more of these type of episodes.

  • Tom

I used to work at BDV, so I am a bit biased. I will say that the Vin Gris is always good — there was a period where many of the wines weren’t representative of Randall’s brilliance and vision. I still followed the wines and have been out to the tasting room a couple of times in the last 4 years — each time I was there I couldn’t get a clear answer on where Randall was at — even in this show, with Pac Rim — he still owns it but is not involved, etc. etc. At the end of the day, none of that matters — I just hope that the wines return to greatness and are truly representative of the man and his mad and inspired vision.

Gary, thanks for bringing RG and the thunder…..

Didn’t Randall have a star named after him? Always a pleasure to see a truly important wine figure on the thunder show.

QOTD: I think of Boony Doon as that eager intelligent student always looking to discover, learn, and do better. In the wine world that’s a noble pursuit, and for such a successful legendary brand that’s very admirable indeed. Cheers to continued success and new inspiration.

PS: My 04′ cigares are sleeping nicely when’s a good time to pop open?

This show nailed it. Probably one of the best examples of “changing the wine world.” Keep these guest coming and let them speak more…especially someone like Randall, who has so much to say…and can speak it well. Would love to hear more from him.

There was an excellent article about Bonny Doon, Randall, his vision and branding in Inc. magazine a few months ago

i’m not really all that familiar with bd, but after learning about the emphasis on rhone styles and the balance between new/old worlds, my interest is piqued. I will certainly have to get some next time i go shopping.

  • Great second half!
QOTD – had some BD wines a few years ago where i liked the marketing but the wine didn’t hold up – recently had some Pacific Rim that made me think again. Will have to try out some of the higher end ones – that syrah sounds interesting!
