I realize this was recorded 5 years ago but, I hope to God GV has learned to STFU since then (and lay off the caffeine) when a guest, especially one of Randall’s caliber, is invited to an episode. I was hoping things would change for episode 2 with Randall, but it became painfully tiresome, annoying, and embarrassing to be honest, to have Randall continuously interrupted, and worse yet, to then have GV drone on about some tangent, then finally remember to shut up and get back to the interview.
2 things I live by:
– You can not learn anything new when you are doing the talking.
– A conversation between 2 people is NOT waiting for the other one to finish so you can say what you want to say (much less interrupting them constantly).

Great information. You should make it annual event with Randall.

Honestly, this was painful to watch! Randall could barely finish a single sentence. What a missed opportunity to listen to what a brilliant winemaker had to say. And that may not even be the worst of it all…hiding him behind the bottles, ouch!!!

  • I don’t know a heckuva lot about Bonny Doon wines so can’t comment about my perspective, changed or not. Obviously I respect Randall as a ‘wine geek’ and can understand his rich and varied history. Gary whom I just *love* is brilliant, talented, adorable etc. etc. just needs to practice a bit the art of listening and giving someone else the center stage. I know it’s difficult for him as he’s so frigging competitive. Well, just my 2 cents. The art of listening is a skill in itself and actually a way to give back, to be giving and loving. Sorry, now blathering a bit. Cheers!

  • Gonna look into the varietals mentioned on this show. I need an American de Pape. And I gotta get that Syrah. Keep it going!

Excellent show Gary! Love the idea of bringing winemakers on the show and letting them talk shop. As for the QOTD, I’ve had Bonny Doon wines several times, I always thought their Big House Red was a good value for 10$. I loved the ca del solo sangiovese when I tried it a few years ago. I have always been a bit disappointed by some of the cheaper Bonny Doon Zins from years past. I recently had a chance to try their newest Sangiovese and was very impressed, it seemed like a great balancing act of old world and new. The Bonny Doon marketing ploy always seemed kind of fun with its zany labels, but from a quality standpoint I was always more impressed with their ca del solo line.

Why in the world did you cover up your guest’s face with the wine bottles? That was so distracting.

Holy crap – I don’t think I can do another episode – in all do respects of the Doonster – but there’s a reason Van – ner – chuck – reigns on this sphere.

  • Ouch!!! Stay within your niche Gary…That is not it….Your niche is sitting in front of a camera and talking to your customer. Just you!!! I feel so many try to be everything in any business. Understand what you can and can’t do.

If you want to interview people get someone else to slide into your spot to take care of that. Or don’t do it at all…That was an OUCH !!!

Keep experimenting and trying….way to go on that part.

    Miller….

    Great Show Gary,
It was great to get a lengthy interview in, I enjoyed the two part layout.

OK, first off I watch your show regularly so you know I am a fan. I totally know Randall is a wine geek and us wine geeks could listen to him all day. With that said, the bottles in his face were not good. The times you and he talked over each other, not good. I’ve seen this with you and guest before and it’s not your strong suite, the interview or co-hosting. I do however think these type of shows are great for wine and winelibraryTV, so I hope some of these issues get worked out.

Good interview. I enjoyed the longer format and the second half improved when Randall moved the bottles. I think in the future they might be better off placed in front of the spit bucket. They looked like they were growing out of his nose.

Thanks for having a thoughtful guest on the show. He gave us lots of information in a low key way.

I’ve never tried Bonny Doon before, I’ve seen them, but didn’t try. I will be looking for them now.

I am a long time fiend/friend of BDV. I say “HAZZAH” to and applaud the steps that Randall and the rest of the Doonstas’ have taken to make their wine and the ingredients more transparent. Biodynamic is a very hard thing to get certified for, but it is even harder(though it is getting less so) to explain it to consumers.
Plus the wines rock, as do their staff and events.
Raise a glass to knowing what’s in your glass!

QOTD:Until this episode I’ve always thought Bonny Doon Vineyards were marketing goofballs who spent more time on label making than winemaking, which has made me not take their wine very seriously. Although the wine I have had from them has been good wine. i. e.- the last BD wine i had was the “Il Circo” white with a crazy ass circus(circo?) label on it, but it was good stuff. I think in a very significant way, as Randall said, “The marketing got ahead of the wine.” I’m glad you had Randall on, GV, because I now have a very changed perspective. Oh, and I’ve had several of the Muscat Vin de Glaciers myself- ironically, a very modestly labeled BD wine. Good luck Randall with your new pursuits and keep up the good work Mr. V!

  • This was a very interesting series for me, and I appreciated the opportunity to listen to a knowledgeable and profound winemaker. However, I have to throw in my criticism also in the hopes that you make the necessary adjustments for the sake of both your guests and viewers.

While I think the conversation was, for the most part, fair and lively, I really wanted to hear Randall’s discussion at the end about the ingredients labeling, and you rudely cut him short. So damnit, I missed out! More importantly, the bottles in his face was very disrespectful. However, as a pro photographer I understand angles and perspective, and I fault your videographer for not either pointing it out or making the necessary adjustments. I completely understand that you, Gary, probably had no idea he was being covered up. But let this be a lesson. Perhaps you can both be more aware of this possibility and do what is necessary to give us viewers a clear view.

QOTD: To new to comment on this question but really loved the passion that Randall has for making great wine….great guest GV.

Bottles in the face again is irratating but an over all great two part interview/conversation….keep the goodness flowing GV….well done.

Very interesting show and certainly a very interesting guest.

QOTD: My impression of Bonny Doon had previously been “marketing goofballs” rather than serious winemakers. Mind you, I loved their marketing – I just hadn’t had any of their serious wines. I’ve had the Bog House Red several times and thought it was a decent “Tuesday night wine”, but nothing special. I have seen the Le Cigare Volant on a wine list or two, but never tried it because of my previous impression of Bonny Doon. Now having “met” Randall, I am interested in trying some of their wines.

Love the shows with Randall Grahm, well done. I understand that you have to moderate the show. It’s not the responsibility of your quest to host.

I thought the both shows were great. I look forward to many more quests. Don’t be afraid to make long shows everyone once in a while if you have time, the two-part format works as well. They will be well received. I have to confess I have never had a Doon wine. I will give one a whirl though.

Thanks again to you, the crew and the guests.

Gary, we love you, but in this episode (double episode) you were incredibly annoying. Please go back and watch the episode and count the number of times you interrupted Randall. It has to be over 50. Again, we love you, have been watching WLTV for almost 2 years, and will keep watching. We understand you’re excitable and it’s one of the things we love about the show. But we have to call you out on this because it did a disservice to your guest and viewers. You have your guests on for a reason, let them speak!

QOTD: We’ve only had some of the lower-end, widely available “Bonny Doon” wines (Ca del Solo brand) and haven’t been very impressed. We’re looking forward to trying the higher end wines soon.

Thanks for another great episode (x2). My image of Bonny Doon before seeing this episode involved both of the stereotypes Randall mentioned. Now I am happy to see that he seems to be refining his focus and trying to put forth the image of a quality-minded winery.
