90/100

line of the day – ‘this has a little bit of a smell of the stuff you can get busted for if you’re Cheech and Chong’

Charity wines reviewed here and the seriousness of the show sees Gary in slightly more subdued mode than usual. Still enjoyable but not blowing my socks off.

  • Really good show. I don’t think I’ve ever had anything as big as you made that last wine sound, so I’d definitely be excited to try something like that.

QOTD: I recently had a 2000 Stag’s Leap Syrah. It was absolutely amazing. So gamey and we just happened to be drinking it with a couple of venison back straps. So good.

QOTD: This year? Hmmm. Nothing jumps out right away. Maybe a Beckman rhone blend. Maybe a Clos Julien Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon. I’ve had more wine from the rest of the world this year.

If I may ask Gary and the other members here, regarding the last wine’s cuvee of (as I vaguely recall) close to 2/3 Cabernet Franc and 1/3 Cabernet Sauvignon, what other wines (regardless of price) have you tasted which have a very similar blend. I believe the great Chinons and Bourgueils have almost no sauvignon and the St. Emilions which are cabernet franc dominant (most notably Cheval Blanc) incorporate some or all the rest using merlot. This seems like quite a unique wine, and being a fellow fanatic of cabernet franc, I very much hope to try it. There was in my view an outstanding assessment of this grape in the 7th Edition of Robert Parker’s Buying Guide, written by David Schildknecht (sp?). I may quote it at an appropriate time.

Gary, if Patriot fans are as evil as you portrayed them yesterday, I hope you will excuse the evil nature of my enquiry. I am hoping however you were speaking in jest.

QOTD: Hayman & Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Zinfandel was pretty good. I’m optimistic about my Thumbprint Cellars, Russian River Valley, Pinot Noir in the cellar. Haven’t tried it yet.

Good show Gary – and a great cause behind he product. Products like this really change the dynamic of the value.

QOTD: I cannot for the life of me think of the last CA wine I have had … I need to diversify!

I have had a few good ones lately…’96 Spottswoode has phenominal and had plenty of life left. I just tried the brand new ’05 Cade Howell Mountain Cab and that was quite impressive as well. I like it better than their Plumpjack bottling especially considering it was their first release.

QPTD: Favorite CCA wine this year? Hard to pick. Maybe an 04 Merry Edwards Klopp Ranch. Also a Hanzell Pinot provided by SierraDoc at an offline was stupendous. The initial release of the Ovid 2005 Red Wine was also pretty special. Having a hard time choosing a favorite.

Great show, what a fantastic cause. Just went on the lookout ridge website and purchased a bottle of the cab. As for the QOTD – i would have to say Caymus Cabernet.

  • Gary- I started watching you about two weeks ago and I can’t get up from my desk. I think this is the best wine review site going. Excellent show today- I love it when the wine world can help a cause in such an awesome way.

So here’s my question… As someone who has undoubtedly tasted thousands of wines from around the world- have you ever had a wine so good (or so bad for that matter) that it moved you to tears? I just tasted a 2001 Chateau Riussec Grand Cru and it was pretty damn close for me. Just wondering.
